Definitely go back and watch all the way to the end. You'll love it. (And just a hint, never stop a Sabaton video before it comes to a stop on its own; there is often something of significance at the end.) A former commander (trainer? I don't remember...) of Stigler's once told him, "If I ever see you shooting down a man in a parachute, I'll shoot you myself." Stigler considered Ye Olde Pub to be a parachute, as it was so badly damaged and completely helpless, and so he didn't shoot it down - even though that would have been the kill to win himself the Knight's Cross. As for what next? Sabaton has another animated story video, Night Witches. You might find that one interesting.

at the start of the war, the commanding staff of the luftwaffe was perhaps the last air force to stick to the WWI "knights of the sky" motto, fighting like gentlemen, of course by the end of the war, this mentality had almost totaly disapeared

Interesting fact: Stigler was made an honorary member of Brown's bomber group and was invited to a reunion of the descendants of Ye Olde Pub. He felt uncomfortable being there hearing stories of the sons and families of the pilot and crew of the bomber until one of them said to him "Sir. The only reason that We can actually make this reunion today is because of you. No one deserves to be here more than You"

While in training Stigler was told by his commanding officer “If I ever see or hear of you shooting at a man in a parachute, I will shoot you down myself. You follow the rules of war for you - not for your enemy. You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” Stigler later commented “To me, it was just like they were in a parachute. I saw them and I couldn’t shoot them down. “ "You fight by rules to keep your humanity.” That is a powerful statement

My father flew in the US Army Air Corp during WW II. He had 13 completed (bombs dropped) missions in B-17 ... as a fill in. He was assigned to C-47 which primary mission was paratroop drop, C-47's were unarmed. My dad was one of many from the Greatest Generation and he was very quiet about most of what he experienced. I still have the picture he took of two friends in the cockpit of their B-17 he took it just before a mission that those men never returned from ... dad did not know if they became POW's or if they were killed when their plane went down. Still even though my namesake and my dad's beloved older brother did die at the hands of the Nazi's dad loved the German people and the country. I was born long after the war and near the end of dad's service he was sent to Germany as an attache to Germany. He loved taking us around the country and introducing us to as much of the culture as possible. For my dad the enemy was the Nazis not the everyday Germans. Like you when I first saw this story and then to see Sabaton do their thing ... CHILLS!!! My dad would have balled his eyes out hearing this story and would have loved the Sabaton take. Dad gave me several wonderful gifts in life ... love of dogs, photography, music, woodworking and skiing. To all who appreciate this song and story on behalf of all the men and women who serve or served with honor, thank you for recognizing they are human and not war mongers as sadly some try to claim. My dad despised war and worked hard to do many wonderful things that made him a hero to me because of how much he loved helping others.

By far, my favorite Sabaton song, and the one I can most relate to. I live near Bremen (the place they bombed) and Oldenburg (where they almost crashed), and one of my Opas (Grandpa) was a AA-gunner at the Atlantikwall, in the Netherlands. I wonder if he saw a BF-109 escorting a B-17? Good reaction.

It was about -60°C up there for the crew. It usually doesn't even get this cold in the worst Siberian winters. Antarctica is warmer than that. I really don't wanna imagine how it felt like for crew. You're literally freezing, getting shot at from all sides, your plane basically shouldn't even be flying at that point anymore, and you can't even fire back because your guns are full of ice. Also... NEVER stop a sabaton video until the end. you missed a part.

Some bomber missions were protected by accompanying fighters, but most missions were not because of the shorter ranges of the fighters of the day. Bombers were constructed to go on long missions deep into enemy territory, fighters were made to wait on the ground until they had targets coming in to their area, then take to the sky and to be very fast and agile. Another way to say it is that fighters have shorter legs then bombers in general, this is true to this day. That was the reason the bombers back then had so many defensive guns and flew in formation, they knew they would have to fend for themselves the majority of the time in the air...

just some basic about aviation, bombers are usually made to go Mid to long distances, Fighters are designes to go Short to Mid distances, so a bomber in ww2 would always be alone dropping their bombs, and would be until they reached the cover of friendly fighters, if the fighters could find them in the wast empty sky. it's WW2, technology is what it is, and every side have just so much resources, so they have to optimize, at the potential cost of lives

My dad flew C-47s dropping paratroopers into European combat zones. He was shot down behind German lines during Operation Market Garden. He actually knew Charlie Brown. Stigler tried to get Ye Old Pub to land so the crew would be captured. At least that way they’d live. When Brown shook his head, Stigler pointed toward Sweden, but Brown misunderstood and again shook his head. So Stigler decided to escort them out of German air space. While Ye Olde Pub’s crew were told not to talk about the incident, other pilots knew. This was an act of honor and chivalry in a modern war. Stigler was such an extraordinarily good man. NOTE: Stigler was able to fly that B-17 across the German AA gun placements because Germany had captured B-17s that they would use to fly over Allied territory to gain reconnaissance. That’s why the guns on the ground didn’t just shoot Ye Olde Pub out of the sky as it went overhead, BF-109 or no. Seeing an escorted B-17 might have been unusual, but it certainly happened. Listen to Christmas Truce and 1916.

A lot of credit for this story goes to the excellent flight instructor of the German pilot who told him in no uncertain terms that if he ever heared about him shooting at pilots on a parachute he would personally execute him with a bullet to the head consequences be damned! The pilot took this stern warning to heart, when he saw the damaged bomber and the crew barely clinging on to live he made the judgment call and equated them with pilots on a parachute and instead of claiming his knights cross chose to risk his life, his career and his honor in order to Escort them to safety.

@@HellBrYnger I mean. Richtofen was highly popular among the Luttwaffe. The book a higher call expands about this incident and gives some insight of what went inside the german air force, a good part of them followed their own moral compasses and were against the nazis. Also. The whole phrase was said by Gustav Rodel, another great ace of the Luttwaffe. The phrase ended in "We don't have this codes for the enemies but for ourselves, to be able to look ourselves on a mirror and still see a human being"

As I recall, it was nearly impossible to get fighter escorts for strategic bombers in Europe until the advent of the P-51. It was a question of range, as Mustangs with their Rolls-Royce "Merlin" engines could fly farther and longer than any other "pursuit" aircraft in existence.

Well, unfortunately, it's hard for any WWII fighters to escort bombers because they just don't have the range for it. Fighters then were designed to be as small and fast as possible, and that meant sacrificing operating time. They just didn't carry enough fuel, and I don't think drop tanks existed at the time for long range flight.

About fighter escorts-my understanding was that the B-17 had so many machine gun on it (it was called the Flying Fortress) that at first they thought they could just send bombers without escorts, later they changed because of losses, but even then there was a problem of the range of the fighters. Eventually the P-51 Mustang with drop tanks for extra fuel solved the problem.

There so many more things to say about this incident. 1/ I believe there was a standing order to not spare any plane or even pilot in a parachute. If anyone had reported the incident Stigler would most likely have been court martialed and shot 2/ Stigler stayed with the B-17 to keep the AA gunners from shooting it down, not leaving it until they got to the coast. He first wanted them to land but they refused, he then wanted them to fly to Sweden as it was closer than Britain, but they didnt understand what he meant and continued to fly towards Britain 3/ When fighting in Africa, Stigler was told by his commander, Gustav Rödel, that if you follow this order to shoot down helpless enemies I will shoot you myself. You will not follow this order to save the enemy but to save your soul because you will never forgive yourself. Stigler has said that he remembered this when he was thinking about shooting down the bomber 4/ Brown told his commander when he was debriefed and to an intelligence officer. However he was ordered not to tell anyone and the whole thing was kept secret. There was two reasons for this, one was that they didnt want other bomber crews to think that the next german fighter would spare them, and the other reason was they they didnt want the enemy to be portrayed in a humane way. 5/ Everyone in the B-17, except the initially killed gunner survived the war, with the last member dying in 2016 6/ The reason Stigler didnt fire in the first place was that he saw that the tail gunner machineguns were pointing upwards, showing no one was using them. When he came closer he saw the dead tailgunner and when he got closer he saw that the mid section gunners were either injured or trying to save other wounded crew members. 7/ Stigler wasnt part of the fighters that shot at the plane, they saw the plane fall and thought they had shot it down. Stigler was actually on the ground when the plane flew by having just come back from another mission 8/ Brown searched German records for 4 years but found no mention of the incident, for obvious reasons because Stigler never reported it. It was first when he put an ad in a german flying magazine that Stigler responded 9/ The B-17 crew used to have reunions and Stigler was invited and at that first meeting felt out of place and didnt think he deserved to be there. Brown felt something was wrong and asked Stigler what was wrong, so Stigler told him. Brown brought him to a large group that was gathered to the side and asked Stigler if he knew who these people were? Stigler obviously said no, so Brown told him, these are some of the children and grandchildren of the men you saved and if it werent for you they wouldnt be here, so no one deserves to be here more than you To me Stigler was a true hero and human who was in a war, but was still able to feel mercy

So early on in the bombing campaign there was little to no fighter cover for bombers, the main reason being fighters having only a fraction of the range bombers had, they'd try to fly fighters in shifts picking up different escorts along their trip, unfortunately if a bomber flight was early or late to the meetup they'd miss their escorts or if escorts had to wait it was less time and fuel to escort meaning theyd have to leave earlier I believe at the time of this run, December of '43 P-51s with expanded fuel tanks were finally hitting front lines

What many people dont understand is that the Wehrmacht were the SOldiers of the country no matter who ruled it and soldiers were drafted basically every man older than 17. That was the Wehrmacht the army. That was not something political. The SS was political but the Wehrmacht and SS had inernal fights all over the place. In this video you can see how he veterans of WW1 drilled the Army with respect. The Brits did the same with their soldiers in WW1. Not shooting medics, not shooting parachuters on the way down, no war crimes... That was a code usually. The war crimes were done by the SS and then by brain washed young people in their late teens that grrew up with propaganda in their brain . You can see that in the Islamic state now. Brain Wash PS: He took down 33 other planes totally and the B17 took down an good share as well even civilians that day. That is not the moral. Its an order and Iam sure nobody is waking up and having to kill someone. This is about two people who killed but they show you a face behind the killer
