This is definitely my new Go-To Microphone in the studio! I love this thing! You can use it on pretty much anything, and I love versatility when it comes to gear. I hope this video helps anybody thinking about buying it!

I have a budget of £1,000 for a new mic what would you recommend if you could choose any for that price? I will be using it for singing. Just want to get the best option for that price. Looking for advice!

Thats a great budget for a microphone! Theres so many I haven't used its tough to say. But if I were you, I would get a Neumann and never look back😅 But if not the Slate is a great option, and they have newer/better models now as well. Telefunken have great mics as well. Try and find a way to test a couple out of you can. Or make sure you can return them if you aren't satisfied! A good preamp certainly helps as well!

FG 269 is a good one.Was wondering how it would be to combine a couple of these mics in different track & put it all together without phasing issues !

Good question! I've actually only done it with maybe 3 different models, didn't really have any issues. I'm wondering if you really piled them on though they might. I'll try it out!

@@MattAzzarello Thanks.Did you play those 3 tracks simultaneously & no phasing issues? I don’t plan on piling it up .I use Logic pro.I was even considering opening up additional busses & using different models on each of the buses.But i dont think that would be necessary if your method works. I am also using a Stellar X2 - my best sounding mic (imo )- using the VMS on it! Have you experimented VMS with other mics? I am using an Apogee Duet.What preamp are you using? Sorry for too many questions!

@@bernardclifford8708 I'm actually running it straight into the Apollo Twin Preamp! I use Logic too! I actually ran the modelling and then bounced the track in place. And I really focusef on one and just blended in added mid range from another, and high end from another, subtley probably lol

Hey man! What you're actually hearing, is straight into an Apollo Twin, without the Slate VMS hardware! So yes, you certainly can. I'm not using any preamp emulation either, just straight in to the Apollo, then into the Slate Software!

Hey, Matt Great video! I have two questions for you. 1. Have you tried using your Apollo Twins real-time UA preamp and compressor plugins while tracking along with the Slate ML1 mic simulations? If so what were the results and did the two interfere with each other at all? 2. In the intro to this video you showed an Avantone CV-12 so I assume you have one. How does the ML1 compare to the CV-12? Right now I use a CV-12 with an Apollo Twin and I’m curious about the ML1. Thanks!

That's actually what I upgraded from to get the slate mic! The CV 12 is a great Mic. I only sold it to be able to afford the upgrade, if I could have kept it, I would have! I haven't actually done any testing using any UAD processing before the slate emulations! But I think I've seen people do it online!

@@musicismyllife8899 Well I can do that within the DAW which I definitely have done. But not using the unison Preamps, I usually just keep them with no emulation, then the first plugin within the DAW is the Slate emulations.

Slate (the manufacturer) will send you some emails to register it and download the software! There could be even more mic emulations included, since I purchased it!

Yep, it doesn't need any external power supply. As long as your interface has Phantom Power, you're good to go (and I would be shocked if it didnt lol) They do try and push their "clean preamp" but the emulations are so good regardless!

@@bassboosted-231 Yes, the mic going through their preamp, will technically gives the software the audio that the algorithms were based on. So you can use anything really, they just claim that when paired with their preamp, you will get a more accurate representation of the emulations

You'll have to register the software to your ilok. I did it a long time ago so I can't say I remember the steps!

Hi, that was a great tutorial and well done. I notice that you use that plugin with Logic Pro X how did you do that? You had that Slate ML1 with all those vintage microphone to work inside Logic Pro X.. I want to buy that Slate ML1 mic with its software only if I can use the plugin to my Logic Pro X.. I've thought about it. They definitely sound a little nicer, but you'll probably find you'll still feel the same way about each microphone. There's a few other videos I'm sure you could find those, I do appreciate you checking out the video though! Maybe I'll do one in the future

@@MattAzzarello Reason I asked the OP question is because I thought your situation represents the real deal and I found it to be one of the better video's on youtube about this mic. Yeah, I think the differences are quit subtle. My understanding is that if you put the pre-amp before the mic model you'll change the frequency response before it hits the selected mic model. I don't necessarily think it's wrong though. I mean if it works it works. Anyhow thank you for your reply I didn't expect it to be this quick.

@@MattAzzarello from what I heard the apollo's preamp is fairly clean. I recall Slate saying that the mic can be used with the apollo's preamp as well. In the end it all comes down to personal preference anyway! Anyhow thank you for sharing this video!

Yep, you don't need the VMS Hardware. They list some Interface preamps that work well, like the UA Apollo's, which is what you're hearing it through. No VMS
