When that helmsman died at his post aboard the Sword of Baal, I got so many goosebumps that it was actually uncomfortable. There is a naval military tradition in my family (possibly going back to the War of 1812, but that is hard to verify), and the idea of a helmsman literally refusing to die until his vessel was safe gave me a serious frog in my throat. Everyone knows a captain goes down with his ship, but helmsmen are the same. In fact, I believe that it used to be an unwritten rule that the only person that a captain could not command to abandon ship was the helmsman... however, I think that fell out of common knowledge along with the age of sail. Anywho, I've thoroughly enjoyed this series! Thank you for making excellent content, and I am looking forward to whatever you create next.
@s3p4kner Жыл бұрын
Same, I had a grandfather survive the HMS Barham torpedoed off Gibraltar and his brother served on the Hood (before it's fateful voyage) and going back to the age of sail in the merchant navy. But I think the scene speaks to 'Duty before Death or Dishonour' which has a certain romanticism about it and those who know the stories can enjoy a much deeper connection. He's the Helmsman o the ship and if anyone can get the ship safe it's him, dying will just have to wait.
@TheD-Ham Жыл бұрын
That’s awesome if that’s true man and I wouldn’t doubt it the captain having a reliable man to go down with would be a reassuring thought to any captain on his way out with the ship
@SlimRhyno Жыл бұрын
@@TheD-Ham It is as true as any tale passed down through generations of sailors can be 😏. But seriously, when your average citizen thinks about a ship going down, for some reason (probably film) they have an image of a lone, stoic captain on the bridge and a slow camera zoom out as the ship finally slips below the water. In reality, if "abandon ship" has been ordered, things have gone about as wrong as they can. Chaos can't begin to describe it. Snapping masts, splinters flying into your eyes, brothers/friends screaming in pain, slipping on a deck that's now slick with blood, probably a sail catching fire and wrapping itself around your now-burning-alive men. A captain has to be everywhere, saving those he can, barking orders above the din, trying to communicate with other friendly ships in the formation, letting them know to either fight on or escape the slaughter, but either way not to be slowed on his own ship's behalf. The last thing he needs is to be metaphorically shackled to the wheel. You see what I'm saying? Anywho, I hope these mental images might help to convey at least a fraction of the hell at sea that would be occuring if the "abandon ship" order was given.
@SlimRhyno Жыл бұрын
@@s3p4kner Damn straight, my brother! Ships don't go down in an instant. Even a thoroughly perforated wooden hull can limp a surprising distance before capsizing. The goal will be to withdraw to a more advantageous position for the men that have to abandon their beloved charge; either closer to shore, deeper into a friendly formation for easier rescue, or perhaps even closer to the enemy vessel (that your men may take revenge on those who caused them such woe, or at least would die a quicker and nobler death than being picked off piecemeal while floating helplessly in the deep blue).
@Andrewza1 Жыл бұрын
During our abandoned ship drills the breach crew would stay to the last. It not actually a case the captain must go down with the ship. But he must ensure all others are off before he leaves and bridge crew would leave with him. There a bunch of other stuff a warship ship sicking must do to. Like smash the radios with a axe.

Nice little tabletop tid-bit. "Only in death does duty end" is actually a stratagem (in game abilities that units can use) usable by HQ units (I think). Minor infodump: Technically, any Astartes Bolter can use specialized rounds (generally Hellfire against Tyranids/organics). The Deathwatch, however, do tend to be the only ones to have the full range of options for any mission. Kaz's Bolter, itself, seems to either be a shortened Stalker Bolter, or it has an additional targeting optic (Preysense/Red-Dot/Motion-Preditctor/etc). It may also be a Relic. Excellent breakdown by C30K.

@@nobodyimportant2510It's not him overcoming Horus, it's him presumably sacraficing himself to cut that chip into Horus' armour that the Emperor later used to end him. Admittedly it could be him killing Horus, but he's been shown to be way too powerful for that in my opinion.
@tiagojohannes5920 Жыл бұрын
@@LewisB3217 No, Sanguinius most likely slaughtered Horus due to him falling to the black rage, you have seen how powerful blood angels get when they succumb to it now imagine probably the most powerful primarch or atleast best fighter. Yes, Horus was juiced up by chaos but why would the emperor get wounded so badly despite knowing Horus was wayyyy too far gone and was pure evil at the point of their confrontation so it wouldn’t make sense for him to give Horus a chance to touch him before deleting him from existence but the emperor would definitely not want to kill sanguinius since at that point he was his favorite son so he would have been hesitant which allowed sanguinius to do so much damage to the emperor before finally killing sanguinius. So ye sanguinius prob entered the black rage killing Horus easily and then attacking the emperor causing him to slay sanguinius

Hey man, love your stuff. Just wanted to throw you a pronunciation heads up. Chitin is pronounced "ky-tin". Its a structural polysaccharide that makes up the exoskeletons of insects and arachnids (and tyranids), as well as the psuedo cell walls of fungal cells. Think of it as a stable sugar infused with a hardener that has to "tan" like leather as it hardens after a molt. Crustaceans use it too, but theirs is infused with calcium carbonate to strengthen it. Hope this helps. Keep it up!

It seems like too often in the 40K universe it's one heroic individual, usually the guy in charge, fighting completely on their own taking down the Big Bad. Ignis advancing on his own perfectly illustrated into the swarm illustrated perfectly why sending armor in unsupported is never a good idea. I'm still in the camp that the Emperor killed Sanguinius because he either couldn't kill Horus out of respect for his brother, or came to agree with him. I feel the black rage is the blood angels losing their minds as they experience the last moments, witnessing their primarch cut down by their own god emperor and causing them to doubt everything they've believed and built their lives around. They lock them away once it happens, no-one besides only the most loyal to the emperor can access them to prevent people from maybe learning the truth, they only see Horus and we never know what happens after that. Maybe they hear/see the truth?
@someidiotnamedtricks6397 Жыл бұрын
Honestly it's theoretically possible as sanguinius and horus were *the* closest primarchs (and the original gay primarch joke don't @ me) but the only reason it's not entirely possible is because in the end the final battle was witnessed by multiple people (including both loyalists and traitors) so it wouldn't make a lot of sense... And besides if it was both sangy and horus emps more than likely would've lost as it was sanguinius' death which caused him to remember he was the most powerful psyker in existence lmao.... Still a good theory either way :>
