When the fines for child labor are so cheap. Then it's not illegal. It's just a cost of doing business.
@freedomishavingachoice3020

^ THIS. A fine is not a punishment, it's a fee to be free to do illegal activity. We would go to jail for exploiting a child. Employers don't. If a business uses child labor they're still in operation years later. Why? The berry farms in Washington are a very good example, sometimes the farmer even owns the housing the child is living in that they employed. Yes. Seriously. Go look. "Nearly two years after ABC News cameras uncovered young children toiling away in Michigan's blueberry fields, federal investigators have found yet another disturbing example of illegal use of child labor in the berry industry. Three southwest Washington strawberry growers were fined $73,000 last week after the U.S. Department of Labor found children between the ages of six and 11 working in their strawberries fields in June." *A fine is not a punishment, it's a fee to be free to do illegal activity.*

SCANDAL - no much more than that. I have not seen any CPS involved as far as JVS or PSSI violations are concerned. But when it comes to allegations against parents, made anonymously by criminal neighbors or family members - they are immediately there. Why? Because it's the easiest way to make profits for the agency based on a GOV system. This system is designed to pay $ 8 000+ for each child locked away from parents or brought to foster care. That's the world of America! Thanks to 60 minutes for doing this report!!!

Thank you 60 Minutes for the child labor segment; it's heart breaking children are working in extremely dangerous situations to support themselves and their families in the United States. Questions: 1. How many of the children were ILLEGAL immigrants/children of ILLEGAL immigrants, helping to support themselves and their families? 2. The children of LEGAL immigrants, is this a red flag of the large number of our population who can not afford to live in this economy? 3. Did anyone you talked to, have a solution for the low-income LEGAL population of the United States, that can not afford to live in this economy? Thank you for your honest and ethical reporting.

It’s sad that these families felt the need to allow their family members to work in that environment. But the fact is there are many families or individuals who are at the edge of being in poverty however they don’t receive and funding from the government (either they are just above the amount allowed or are too proud to accept help) Contrary to what politicians say Americans will take jobs that may not be the most desired, I grew up in WV. There aren’t too many jobs I wouldn’t accept over the years. I was just lucky or maybe it was my hard working habits that put me ahead now. Either way I “believe” there is a deeper story than a company hiring young people. There is a story of families struggling to survive

I agree they bringing these immigrant workers that they can pay them less and take advantage of them because Americans weren't willing to do it for that price! That's part of the immigration discussion is if we will stop letting them bring in these other workers and take advantage of them they will have to pay decent wages! I hate to tell you what every last one of these immigrant families is getting government assistance that they do not deserve cuz they did not pay into the program! You're absolutely right Americans are struggling just to get by we need to quit importing low-wage workers that the social system will have to support but it'll greatly benefit all these corporations that want to make record profits by paying dismal wages! Yeah bringing the workers and taxpayers can pay for their housing their food their medical everything that they need so that the corporations can hire them making nothing and turn record profits this is socialism where the cost is shared by the greater Society but the profits go to just the top 1%

I agree. The 40 year attack on organized labor by the GOP has weakened labor unions into near insignificance. Strong labor in the 50's and 60's allowed the nuclear family to own a home, 2 cars, and send their children to college all on the father's salary. Today, both parents must work simply to make rent and pay utilities. It should come as no surprise that as those "haves" to whom rents are being paid, have raised the cost of living to the point that bills cannot be met even with both parents working.... The result being parents AND children all working simply to pay the cost to live

James Nachtwey is such a profound photographer, dedicating his life to sharing the human experience with so many unimaginable images which he has captured in his & our time.When Anderson asked James if he ever gets depressed or cried, i was already totally teared up and could be considered by insensitive uncaring people as a pseudobulbar patient with my emotional reaction over those images. While selflessly passing on having a family himself, James saying just what he said about the selfless devotion that mothers and fathers have for their children and others in need truely sums up what it means to be an authentic & genuine human. Especially in this overwhelming world of conspicuous consumption, heartless ignorance and pure unadulterated greed, Thanks James for being here and there and everywhere for us and thanks Anderson for bringing James to us in this episode. Meanwhile the other evening while watching the Truth of Trump re-unveiled or re-lived on CNN with a cherry picked audience which i could only describe as "The Children of he Corn" in that CNN special Town Hall in New Hampshire left me feeling empty. That 70 minutes of visual and audio agony really turned me completely blank towards CNN, The next day Anderson aired what i presume was an apology or explanation from CNN. I do enjoy Kaitlan, Anderson and Wolf's TV journalism efforts as opposed to other major and minor TV networks coverage of events in these trying times, but i am dumbfounded still trying to digest the reasoning behind CNN giving such a craven idiot any more screen time than that depraved narcissist already receives on a daily basis. How so many Americans still support Trump after hearing and seeing this endless 8 year loop of egomaniacal depravity, along with the daily mass shootings, insane intentions of politicians and disregard for our planet leaves what floundering faith i have left for my country in question. Though my faith in humanity is still intact, thank God.

Per the Lithium Valley story: my only concern is that what is not mentioned. The "boiling mud" has a heat source which is tectonic activity. How will the industries out there confront rising underground temperatures or plate movement that creates massive earthquakes. And just how clean is the steam that is released? Traditionally, steam power has not been a viable alternative because of the pollutants in the steam. There are a lot of questions the story did not address.

On the child labor segment: The government should also share the bulk of responsibility. Labor inspections have significantly declined over the years and recent decades due to reduced funding, thanks to tax cuts, misallocations of resources, revolving door, business lobbying, and big money in politics to rig the rule of the game in their favor. This is just a tip of the iceberg of what's wrong with this country. Everyone should also be aware of a different age standard for farm work in which 12 years old can legally perform non-hazardous tasks outside school hours with parental permission. Younger children can work if it's a "small" farm or it's a farm owned by parents. Due to lack of enforcement, the reality is worse. For example, look for a video, "Harvest of Justice 2022: Child Labor In Agriculture".

And then we have Arkansas, courtesy of Sarah Huckabee Sanders, recently lowering the working standards for children. A sixteen-year-old can now get work without a permit. But if it's any consolation, minors who are 16 years old can't work more than six days in a week, 54 hours in a week, 10 consecutive hours in a day or 10 hours in a 24-hour period. Ugh! Few things in life happen overnight. Have you been paying attention to The USA over the last few years? I've gone from believing America was the best country in the world all my life up till 2016, to not being surprised at any atrocity, and expecting worse well into the future. When you continually ignore and downplay signs that are right in your face, they eventually come home with a vengeance. Believe me, I've been married. That seems to be what too many average US citizens are doing.

@@jusidit They are not "99.5%" recycled. Lithium, for instance, has the potential for about 50% to be recycled, but the amount that actually is recycled is less than that. Today only 5% of batteries are recycled. Finally, there are a lot of fossil fuels involved in the mining. Nickel is an essential element and its mining is particularly dirty. So-called environmentalists always go on about "green energy" that isn't that green. But don't worry, hypocritical Californians will object to any lithium mining in the state, all while campaigning for the use of EVs which require lithium batteries.

There is a certain depravity one has to have to hire children as a cleaning crew for a SLAUGHTERHOUSE!! A child working over night reported to school with acid burns. Instead of investigating the entire industry and charging adults for endangering the welfare of children, the governing body rushed to loosen labor laws that protect the very people society needs to be protected from! Its disgusting the maximum fine for this violation is so little. Even worse, the money is divided among the treasury department, department that let this happen under their watch and investors. Are we in the fukkn twilight zone? What is even happening in America? Why is this story being reported in a way that minimizes the victims while focusing on the business side? When this story first broke, there were images of WAY more than 2 children. None of them were wearing the protective equipment seen here. I also noticed there eas no mention of the cleaning chemicals being illegal and different from those ised by adults during the day.
