You never know what you have until it's gone. Not to say we didn't enjoy the time. But we may not have cherished the time for what it was. The best of times. Sigh. To be young and foolish again. But I wouldn't trade being in my 20's in the 80's for anything.

This 80s masterpiece puts the likes of Fifty Shades of Grey to shame. I watched it for the first time in my early twenties and was stunned; it remains one of my favorite niche movies. I particularly love the movie's cinematography. The tone is a bit cold and grey, perfectly suiting their toxic and doomed romance. Then there's the scene where they kiss on the street, the woman holding balloons behind her, and you can feel the chilly background light up around them, like a fire set in the rain. The divine 'Slave to Love' performed by the legendary Bryan Ferry is seamlessly woven into the storyline. 'The spring is turning your face to mine...' Spring has come, and so has love. Try as you might to deny it, I bet many of us can relate to at least one aspect of this wicked romance, or whatever you call it. Many relationships don't pan out the way we want them to, leading to nasty discoveries and devastating endings, but the beginning is always marked by euphoria, thrill, and a strong desire to explore the mysterious creature miraculously appearing in our lives, as shown in this movie.

All of Adrian Lyne's movies are so beautifully shot and always perfectly lit. Say what you want about the 80's, but they knew how to make visually stunning movies back then
That's because in the pre-2000s, creativity was ACTUALLY something that was preserved, instead of censorship in the case of one hurting someone's "feewings".

When this film came out I was dating a man that looked a lot like Mickey Rourke (my fella was taller, more rugged... Mickey had more delicate features. He even dressed very similarly to John Gray - he wore beautiful suits to the office and had a beautiful apartment) and I remember watching this with him. We were together for four years and I left because he would not commit to marriage and kids. When he finally realized that I was serious in leaving, he proposed to me. It was too late, when I get to the point where I can walk away, I'm no longer in love. He spent months trying to convince me to come back but I had moved on. I often wonder what my life would have been like if I had accepted his proposal and had kids with him. I can't hear this song or watch this movie without thinking about it or the 80's. Bittersweet.

I was 17, working at United Artist theatre. I walked in and sat down to watch this movie on my break. Whoa! I ended up watching it 6 times during 2 weeks! This is how a good romantic movie should be. Good story lines, good actors, good music. Love and sex can be expressed in so many different ways. But, it should be about pleasure, not pain. S & M may be normal sexual variation, just not for me. As for Mickey R. Yes, he was so freaking handsome in this movie. It breaks my heart to see him now. Common MR, so you fell off the wagon, get back on. Weight gain is not an absolute. We’re you not once a wrestler? Get a personal trainer, eat healthy and get back on track. I’m 51, but I’m healthy and look like I’m in my late 30’s. The passion and feelings are ageless. Many of my 70 plus friends tell me so too. Oh, in the movie “The Thorn Birds” with Richard Chamberlain, Rachel Ward, Barbara Stanwyck. Barbara Stanwyck said to Richard Chamberlain. She was mad at God for making her old, but still gives her the passion of a young woman. Before anyone says Yuck, we all will get old, trust me. But, like the songs says (Young at Heart)”You get the best part, if you are young at heart.”

The music played a huge part in this film. From the beginning when the credits start creeping up in red in a black background to just 30 seconds of Al Green's Love & Happiness then jumps into Luba's Best is yet to Come....jack Nitsze's Love Theme throughout in key moments.....the beautiful scene when they're shopping in Soho to Eurasian Eyes...and finally Luba again in the outro credits singing Let it Go....again while the credits roll. I cannot listen to those songs ever without feeling raw emotions as I feel when watching this film repeatedly. 35 years later and it is still raw emotional pain. We are a product of our times so I appreciate 9 and a Half weeks but I have serious doubt about 50 shades of buttcrack being able to arouse the feelings we experienced during Elizabeth and John's love affair.

40 years this movie has... it's like a painting to me... The woman who wrote the semi-biographical book on which the movie was based - I cannot help but wonder about the shock and pain she must have gone through... Would definitely have liked to talk to her over a coffee and listen to her story. I am grateful to this movie and to its creators' hard work. Our stories bring us closer as humans. And art is a like a window to these stories...

The Original 50 Shades of Grey, when will someone else agree on this, they think its all new, and its not....its all been done before, and I must say, the 80s did it better, now its gone a little bit to far....and Rourke was the first Christian Grey...

And the music in 9 1/2 weeks is far better...:-) J'ai vu les films j'ai la musique des deux et la musique de 50 Shades N,appuie pas aussi bien les scènes et ne reste de pas graver ds la tête des gens...:-( And no nice striptease...;-) Only Annie Lennox and Skylar Grey are good..and one with Beyonce..:-( But all the tastes are in the nature...;-)

Yeah seems like Fifty Shades tried to copy it but this one was much better. Otherwise it never would have evolved into a cult classic. I think I was 13 or 14 when I saw this (oops I just dated myself there). Not in the theaters of course. VHS. Back then all I could say about Kim Basinger was wow!
@saint5ify4 жыл бұрын
Don’t know if him and Don Johnson would agree on that lol. Seeing they did a movie like “Harley Davidson & The Marlboro Man” together 💀 Both of them despised the movie, with Johnson’s ego and Rourkes class act in film, neither of them cared for it. Shame Rourke has gone through the surgery he has and all of the hardships he’s faced and people still kick the guy while he’s down out of sheer weakness. Johnson on the other hand hasn’t aged a bit and has seen a lot of success since Miami Vice. Real shame how this industry works.

On top of that, his daughter Dakota was one of the lead acts in 50 Shades of Grey. Can’t see him really appreciating them using his daughter to objectify an erotic film.
