For those opposed to civil activism, you need to remember that if they can do this to one man then they can do it to any one of us. What are you going to do if, heaven forfend, you commit or are falsely accused of a crime, convicted and sent to jail? Will you not expect to be treated humanely whilst incarcerated, given the basic human dignity that is due us all? That is why we can never stop fighting injustice and inequality. That is why we will never stop.

Guns and automatic weapons are legal to have in this country. I'm a pacifist. Violence begets violence. My advice is to run away from all forms of ugliness you encounter. If that means leaving the country, go for it. We have never lived in a safe country and the threat of imprisonment looms over everyone's head, especially African Americans and activists in general. Julian Assange isn't even a US citizen, but the US is holding him in the Ecuadorian Embassy (under the guise of British law).

William Lillevik its always been a oxymoron.. land of the free home of the brave built by slaves... for a free country and the self proclaimed best country In The world we sure have a bad history of treating immigrants and minority’s like less than human beings.. it’s always been a pretty lie that gets covered up by the wealth and glamour of this nation

Bernie Sanders 2016! He is the only candidate who wants to address issues of inequality, minority oppression, and corruption! Hillary represents the corporate media and the banks, while Republicans will not address these issues! Bernie Sanders is the only reasonable candidate!

OK slavery is wrong and sometimes people are given unfair sentences that force them into unwonted punishment. The political prisoners such as the Angola 3 or the Jackson 5 should have been released long before they were and in the case of the remaining 2 prisoners they should be released. I agree with that. But for those cases that are the majority, where criminals are guilty, hard labor is a necessary punishment.

why do you have to insult me because you disagree with me? All I'm saying is that it's not slavery if it's punishment for something you actually did. If someone robbed you, wouldn't you want them to be punished for their crime? It's only fair. Sitting in a US prison somewhere which frankly are more luxurious than many homes in the US is not punishment for a crime, hard labor is. Please respond with a little dignity next time.

The thirteenth amendment says that slavery nor involuntary servitude shall exist in america "except in cases where the accused shall be dully convicted." that's what I am arguing. hard labor should be kept as a punishment because it is effective for those who deserve it. It is unfortunate and wrong that people should be punished for crimes they didn't commit but should continue to be enforced in US prisons
