First of all, I just want to say that this walkthrough is unequivocally one of the best I've seen - the attention to detail, precision, filming quality, etc. is unmatched. I have experience in 3D design and machining, and even the tools used (pens, calipers, etc.,) leave me in awe. Thank you for sharing this experience with the rest of us. With my limited free time and resources, I recently started experimenting with amateur metalworking. Watching master craftsmen, such as yourself, fills me with inspiration and excitement, and I hope when I finally settle down and actually find a permant residence, I'll be able to dedicate more of my time to these kinds of projects. I'll preface my question with the acknowledgement that it may sound dumb, but when the heat treatment failed, why did you send it off elsewhere? I'm no specialist but after so many videos with heat treating I've seen I kinda knew straight away that something will be off there, still though you're a top-shelf when it comes to knife making on YT :)

Same ! Saw him barely heating it to some unknown temperature (has to be done in the dark to see the correct color, not even testing it with a magnet?). Normally, the steel piece needs to stay a few minutes at the constant temp to allow for its molecules to flow in the good position (carbon into iron etc) and then quenched (not talking about tempering , that comes after)

It is hard to see the colors from the video, I could see better. I did use a magnet, I always use a magnet. That is the only way I can tell if it is ready. I could not get a good heat treat because my forge is not long enough to heat up both ends.

Have you thought about buying a respirator with changeable filters? I realize that you don't need a high quality filter because you already work outdoors most of the time but for me buying a respirator with changeable filters was one of the best buys I've done. It brings many quality of life improvements and they don't cost that much. The one I bought was only like 35€(40$) and it was exponentially better in comfort than the single use ones.

Just a tip: after you dip the chain into the oil I like to stir the oil up with a metal rod that way the heat is evenly distributed throughout the oil and you'll get a more accurate temperature reading.

Yes, you need to heat up oil so the blade would not crack. When oil is not heated up, it does not absorb heat as good as when it is hot; this creates air pockets. I usually get it up to 130 deg F.

I have made 15 knives from CPM 154 CM, 3 from S-35VN. It's not a hassle to heat treat because I ship them out. Steel is waaaayy more expensive than high carbon and steel is much harder to drill and it eats up your bandsaw blades like nothing.

It allready is. :D you get Damascus when you forgeweld Two, or more different Kind of Steel, with high and low Carbon. The pattern will Show up, after you etched it in some kinda Acid. Iron Chloride, Sulfur Acid, sometimes even Vinnegar will do the work. It's a Question of time you'll willing to spend with this process.
