Bestselling psychologist Lisa Miller leads Slavoj Žižek, Destiny and Myriam François through a guided meditation, during a live debate.
This is an extract from 'The game of life'. To watch the full debate, head to iai.tv/video/t...
Games are everywhere. And not just on the football field. Workplaces, dating lives, education and even friendships are being packaged as games. Tinder makes love a swiping game of snap, AI claims to have solved long-standing scientific problems by ‘converting them into games’. But critics argue games distort life and empty it of meaning. And games can be dangerous. QAnon was created initially as an alternative reality game, and the world is not made safer by understanding military build up as 'an arms race'.
Do we need to end the relentless gamification of life? Should we recognise life has no clear goal, no way to win, no measures of success, no extra lives or second chances? Should we see games as furthering inequality - creating winners and losers? Or have games always been with us, from the system of money to the hierarchies of education, and for the very good reason that they are a remarkably powerful motivator for action?
#zizek #slavojzizek #awakenedbrain #guidedmeditation
World-leading philosopher Slavoj Žižek, radical internet personality Steven Bonnell, and bestselling author and psychologist Lisa Miller grapple with the gamification of life. Hosted by pioneering journalist Myriam François.

@fromeveryting29

He didn’t say he hated when people talk too much, but when they open up too much to him, and he doesn’t want to hear it. It IS uncomfortable when people tell too much about their inner sincere emotions to us, and it’s actually a sign of respect and kindness to set bounderies and «lie» about your true feelings sometimes. That was his point. It’s socially a sign of goodwill to lie and say «I’m glad to see you» even when you both know they may hate you and secretly want to spill their guts about everything they despise about you. This kind of hypocricy is good. Other types of hypocricy however are typically bad.

To be completely honest, through directly applying meditative techniques and "going within" I've reached identical conclusions about it as Zizek, there is no fruit to be found within that "going within" other than some temporary feeling of gratification that you yourself have set up by simply believing that what you're doing is profound or significant, the reality is, as he says, to identify with your "must" so much that you simply execute it and assimilate it into yourself.
@dt6822
@dt6822 10 ай бұрын
It's actually even worse than that if you think about it applying everything we've learned from Slavoj. It is the ultimate con that works very much like religion. You actually pay someone to tell you or help guide you to sit there and do nothing, apparently to reach some ultimate place of enlightened nirvana, that you never reach, and which you can only know you've reached when you have reached it, such that you permanently search in pursuit of that thing which you never know if you have found until you have allegedly found it. 😊 psychology gets one thing right: all your responses to the world, all the emotional pain we endure, everything that we experience, is inside your mind, and is under your control a lot more than you believe. But they're wrong about everything else.
@valchaars
@valchaars 10 ай бұрын
I believe one shouldn’t pay for meditation. There are meditation retriets and centers that only ask you to cover your accomodation and meals if you wish to learn from the teachers. Otherwise the internet and libraries have extensive resources. To me meditation isn’t about sitting and doing nothing or achieving Nirvana. It’s about training patience and sense of presence; training to let go all the unwanted things in your mind or to reflect on the thoughts and emotions you haven’t had the time to pay attention. It’s also effective at reducing stress; research supported not only by psychologists but also neuroscientists.
@otoyoto7153
@otoyoto7153 10 ай бұрын
@@valchaars There's definitely plenty of data and neurological evidence supporting meditation that's very true. I have a feeling that that has more to do with fixing breathing patterns than the subjective experience of letting go, but that's purely speculative.
@valchaars
@valchaars 10 ай бұрын
@@otoyoto7153 Might be true but I wouldn’t disregard subjective experiences just because they’re not scientifically fitting. And here I’d like to quote the late Terrance McKenna. It’s about plant medicines but can be applied to meditation and subjective experiences in general: “Consider a shaman who uses plants to converse with an invisible world inhabited by nonhuman intelligences. This would seem to rate a headline in the supermarket tabloids. Yet anthropologists report such things all the time and no one raises an eyebrow. That is because we tend to assume that the shaman interprets his experience of intoxication as communication with spirits or ancestors. The implication is that you or I would interpret this same experience differently and that therefore it is no big deal that some poor, uneducated campesino thought he was talking with an angel. Xenophobic as this attitude is, it suggests a good operating procedure since what it is saying is, “show me the techniques of your ecstasy and I will judge their effectiveness for myself.” I did this. This is my credential for theories and opinions I hold. I was initially appalled at what I found: the world of shamanism, of allies, shape shifting, and magical attack are far more real than the constructs of science can ever be, because these spirit ancestors and their other world can be seen and felt, they can be known, in the nonordinary reality.” Thousands of people have had deeply profound spiritual experiences from meditation and possibly Zizek hasn’t. Yet I also have the feeling that he hasn’t really tried. If true, then seeking truth about meditation from Zizek would be like seeking travel advice from Kant. Don’t get me wrong, I like the guy and her exercise wasn’t impressive at all, however from where I stand meditation is all about practice and very little about philosophical discussion. One of the strongest representations of the power of meditation for me, has been Thich Quanc Duc - the burning monk. I don’t see another way to explain the unflinching acceptance of his extremely painful passing. Thus saying that one can only get a temporary feeling of gratification and that it has little significance is more than doubtful to me. Apologies for the lengthy answer.

There is plenty of fruit to be found by going within. Most people do not have the patience to practice long enough to see the benefits and usually their lifestyles are totally anithetical to developing the ability to go in. Of course there are many different approaches to meditation and a qualified, skillful teacher is usually very effective in facilitating the process. The fact is even if we totally disregard being able to withdraw the senses from the outside, almost all people are incapable of doing nothing for for a few minutes, and I mean really doing nothing, rather than going through internal dialogue and thinking about how stupid what you are doing is.

It forces an absolute change in perspective. The idea here with a lot of enlightenment practice is that duality is the fall of man and breaking through the veil of duality results in internal peace. It's like hitting the "desire" button repeatedly and so fast it's "on/off" nature becomes illusory and non-existent to your perception. You're phone screen flickers on and off at a rate so fast that your brain could never register it but it just looks lit up constantly regardless.

The problem with seeking out enlightenment through meditative practice is that you can't pick and choose ideals and approaches. A lot of Buddhists, Yogis, Ascetics of all walks of life have a strongly established system that needs to be adhered to. In Western philosophy, we typically think of a more gnostic approach to it in that it's a solely personal journey, whereas traditional Easterners look at it as any other pursuit in mastery like carpentry or masonry.

Meditation it's not about "finding your deep inner self". It's not even a philosophy there's a area in your brain called default mode network responsible for remembering, thinking about the future, and mind wandering, they studied monks brain and find that this area is enlarged in this people resulting in more resistance in pain and anxiety. Talking more about psychology if you have a problem in your life and you "can't stop thinking about something" when you experienced meditator you can(usually), you realize that thought it's just another function of your mind and there others ways too see reality. But for people who just saw life trough thought and are kind of "over thinkers", specially someone like Zizek, I can see why he thinks that meditation can look just something like "finding your inner self bulshit"

While I partially agree with Zizek on the fact that "going within" is not the best way to "find yourself" (trying things that are outside of you is in fact a best way), I think that by debunking meditation as a way of life and a spirituality thing, a lot of people just miss the power of meditation as a tool to clean your mind of parasite thinking. As much as exercise is a response to the lack of physical activity in modern society, meditation is a response (among others) to the excess of information in modern society. It's really just like a shower for the mind. And that's what people find in meditation nowadays : relief from overthinking and excessive information.

I know we are supposed to engage with the topic and not the person, but now that I look at Žižek, does he not look like he is stimming? I've been a fan of his for a decade, but it never occured to me that he might be on the spectrum. Adhd in particular. I remember he once said he was suicidal after a rejection in his 20s, rejection sensitivity also being one of the traits. I lowkey want to go to one of his talks and ask him about it.

So we need to bury the real self? Sounds dangerous and impossible, how can a man become another? His followers in jail must not have known the general deeply. So your point is that it is not necessary. But what if they did know him deeply? It is an interesting concept for a movie, i will check it out.
