The main problem I have with Jordan Peterson is that he is a clinical psychologist, not a climate researcher, not an economist, not anything else. Yet he blurps out semi correct facts in a very eloquent way to a huge base of followers who believe him without questioning it. I used to be a fan of his until I looked him up in detail because I always got an ichy feel about certain narratives of his. love zizek though , humble, incredibly selfreflected and intelligent person.

Why would anybody think Peterson and Zizek are the polar opposites? Zizek is known to be somewhat conservative and hold opinions often assiociated with right-wing, such as discipline, sex-negativity, Eurocentrism, criticism of the Woke ideology and so on. The better opposite for Peterson would be some anti-capitalist Woke intellectual.

How funny it is that such a rich debate had a mutual understanding of almost opposite poles, while every other ignorant seeing it was looking parts where his knight 'owned' his opponent. Debating has existed since forever and still we don't understand the point of it.

I agree. this was one of the best debates of two people wanting to meet each-other. The response that Zizek CRUSHED Peterson or other way around shows that people are ideologically scewered to hear only what they want to hear. I fell pray to that before i encounterd the Rogan's and Peterson's of the world before. It makes the world a whole lot more complicated now for me. It's way easier to pick a side and stick with it instead of meeting in the middle.

@@benjydp5262 Except Peterson didn't offer any critical analysis of Communism, and often doesn't have definitive views so as to skirt around issues, and deny culpability. He has been endlessly straw-manning the left, and is now demonizing the trans community even though he used to support the concept of transgenderism. He once joked on JRE that he found a way to capitalize on these controversies, and he has very much done so. If he ever was worth taking seriously at all, he is certainly not any longer. Even if his ideas were worth considering or even made sense, middle road compromises can end up removing whatever is necessary for an idea to actually work. Simply looking for a compromise between opposing ideas is not the answer.

It’s not bout “owning” anyone but I think it’s a good thing that zizek exposed JP lack of knowledge on things he often talks about. Oc prolly that’s ineffective cause most of JP listeners act like a blind fan base. Wait! I’m not a Jp haters, instead I appreciate that he did good for a lot of people. Aka he is good when he talks about his stuff… maybe he give simple hints or solutions but in a way that hit lot of men in a positive way. But when he talks about other stuff like (in this case) Marxism… he act like he knows stuff, but he don’t. His knowledge is superficial but agreeable for most of usa audience, cause average American don’t know shit 😅 But when he face a guy who knows Marx and he lose his confidence and goes for “blabla Mao, blabla Stalin” when he is out of words 😅 Hint: anyone should talk about his things and listen when knows better. An Italian movie said “did I ever talk about electronics? did I ever talk about dams and bridges? Of highway? I don’t talk about cardiology, I don’t talk about neurology, I DON’T TALK ABOUT THINGS THAT I DON’T KNOW” 😂 Search for the scene (Nanni Moretti). It’s brilliant

I was amazed by zizek during the convo and I believe Peterson has wanted someone like zizek to come along. The left liberals in Toronto, the activists in Petersons youth, and the cold war i think caused peterson to develop some trauma, which is quite sad. This shows that those on the left need to do more to show the best parts of their ideas and negotiate effectively which zizek did. It was quite touching to see Peterson be profoundly effected by zizek, I get a sense that peterson has took on that constructive criticism that zizek offered.

@@dang5874 I am honestly surprised that no one is talking about is hegels master and slave dialectic. The most important question of our time is how do we get out of it. It is either contradictions within capitalism show itself and we implement reform or revolution or do we use dialectical idealism and synthesise it with dialectical materialism. Peterson is concerned with the over saturation of the dialectical materialist approach to the master slave dialectic which makes any concenssus with belief systems/ideologies impossible.
@froopzoop57393 жыл бұрын
@loudnsounds I'm not exactly sure how? I'm saying that their is a breakdown in how people can be at peace with one another and come to concenssus. A strong materialist approach can be challenging to come to a shared agreement because of material conditions whereas a common idea a "cognitive mapping" is needed if we are to have peace and to confront the problems we are dealing with. @@froopzoop5739 Peterson is in truth just concerned with modern libs, though his solution of upholding the system that is the reason for why modern libs exist appears rather unsatisfactory. Libs are not in truth opposed to the system, they uphold it, sometimes unknowingly (because at large they are a tool to gain power), their manifested opposition to the system rather aims at introducing more and more radical reforms, the goal of which is ultimately for them to get more power, and also for people who are using them to gain more power (if politicians using the mob of liberals to gain power gain power, then the liberals will also gain social power, because their party is in power).

In every movement, in the representation of every idea, sadly, 80% of people are still there only for the nice words and loud slogans, without even actually getting the idea they are so fiercely defending. This is true for conservatives, this is true for the left, this is true for the nationalists and this is true for the libertarians. There are people, who listen to Jordan Peterson and the only thing they hear is what we now see represented in the "Embrace masculinity" videos. Which is unfortunate, because mr. Peterson is in fact a very smart person, who most often has a point, even though many people may fail to understand what he's trying to convey, because he never sugarcoats. There are also people, who read Lenin's essays and the only thing they remember is "Capitalism bad, proletariat for the W", while also failing to even comprehensibly explain what's so bad about capitalism in their opinion That's why it's so easy to paint the other side black. More often than not, they do it themselves by showing how the only thing that matters to them is that they "win" without even understanding what "win" means

Jordan Peterson isn't a debater. He has never done well at debates; he isn't wired to do so. Understand that debates are not usually won by the person that was right. Other phenomena are at play. Peterson naturally tries to get to the bottom of things, to the truth. It's not about "winning." Halfway in to the debate with Zizek he admitted his approach was wrong. He went in to "win." But Peterson realized that's not his usual M.O. and transitioned back to the Jordan Peterson that is just interest of getting to the bottom of things; figuring things out. Peterson's best "debate" was against Sam Harris, but that is because Sam Harris approached the debate with the same intent Peterson did. Sam Harris actually can debate quite well, and without using "gotcha" strategy. But the Peterson/Harris "debates" was one of the best discussions of all time and the fact that it was moderated by Bret Weinstein made it even better. It's a shame that Harris has had a sort of falling out with Bret and Jordan. I understand that a few of you may be bothered by this, because intellectuals have "fans" that cheer for them as if it's a sports team and you want to cheerlead for your favorite intellectual. But it was Zizek himself that said he HATES this sort of behavior.
