Hello, Slovakia here! Exactly this is happening in our country right now - "leftist", nationalist and far-right pro-russian government was elected to dismay of democratic, liberal and progressive political spectrum. @@arisnotheles "Liberal democracy" is just a myth that conceals class dictatorship. In a society where wealth and ownership, including ownership of the news media, are in the hands of a single class, there can be no genuine, effective democracy, only tyranny and corporate rule. The supposed "crisis of democracy" is no such thing, because we dont have democracy. What it is, really, is a crisis of liberal democracy, as the people begin to see through the lie.

Xp All that is happening (me2, black live matters, lgbt+ craze, plastic recycle plastikis on coffee, chasing moths away from light sources) really makes people angry and i agree since the global intuition is shattered, there is no way to channel disharmony then to resonate to something unrelated. The class-identity debate is an old one, but should be compatible under a common politics of anti-domination or equality. Identity is surely exploited by the right because it allows them to take capitalism as given if they centre politics on ‘culture’. Yet, to dismiss the historic materialism of gender and race relations is to miss crucial parts of the wider story. There can be no redistribution with recognition, because there will be no anti-capitalist movement when members of the movement are marginalized
@a_kazakis
@a_kazakis 11 ай бұрын
These 2 things are not connected in a causal relation. You can have and anti capitalist movement where members of the society are marginalized and you can have a perfectly capitalist system where all bigotry and personal identity problems are solved and people are only discriminated against based on class. To conflate the 2 is to lose focus of the end goal. I think that is what Zizek was referring to by saying that the elite "cares" about eliminating bigotry as a distraction, while he right now seem more revolutionary because, while they don't care about bigotry, their message is usually more anti-establishment than the left.
@richard8670
@richard8670 11 ай бұрын
Marginalized in the movement. For marginalization in society, it's the exact opposite. The more accepted minority groups are in wider society and in the global capitalist system, the less reason they have to be dissatisfied, to be a revolutionary, to act. Campaigning for society at whole to accept your favouried minority group, (which is 100% of what the modern left does, there's been no protests centered around class since occupy wall street, think about why identity politics started to ramp up a hundredfold post occupy wall street), lowers the chance of your movement being succesful. A revolutionary doesn't campaign to improve the system they're trying to revolt against, to make it more stable, they actually plan action and revolution. Which the modern left doesn't, because they're all impotent.

@@a_kazakis maybe in some theoretical flight of fantasy that is true, like a Platonic Ideal Form of capitalism or something. If we're being empirical about it though, capitalism has always bent division into its service. It has exacerbated the fault lines of gender, race, and sexual orientation / gender identity in the very service of its aims, which is to keep the proletariat squabbling and subordinate so that it can maintain profit. Zizek's argument in the video is a testament to that fact - capitalists are exacerbating and stoking the flames of fault lines that already existed but were nowhere near this 'hot' a few years ago. The phrase 'culture war' wasn't on everyone's lips in 2015, but leftists and the right wing had their differences still. Now it feels 'hot.' Brace for what's coming.

@@richard8670 "which is 100% of what the modern left does, there's been no protests centered around class since occupy wall street, think about why identity politics started to ramp up a hundredfold post occupy wall street" That is objectively not true. The writer's strike is a class strike, the biggest of its kind in a long while, aimed at delivering terms to capitalists that protect worker interests. Smaller strikes have been ongoing constantly, teacher's strikes, amazon strikes, union strikes, and unions are gaining momentum lately as well.
@DelFlo

Cope. The ‘historic materialism’ of gender and race is nothing other than the historic materialism of Capital. Dynamics of economic and intellectual class can explain every other form of inequality in society. If we act like gender and race inequalities magically arose on their own and can be eradicated without economic reform, *that’s* when we miss a crucial part of the wider story.

In his criticisms, he focuses on fringe issues that exist primarily only in three social media platforms, and ignores the fact that it was "liberals" who achieved real-world gains for workers, the environment, animals, women, minorities and LGBTQ over the past 50 years, against constant resistance from the right, which is not only culturally conservative but also economically conservative and rabidly anti-socialist and anti-communist. Like many pundits, he also calls centrist and conservative Democrats "liberals" to fit his argument, when most of the left stopped doing so decades ago when the DLC Democrats took control of the party.

He does not disagree with your historical analysis. His point is that, since the left was successful in mainstreaming minority rights in feminism, lgbtq, and racial justice in public discourse (about 15 years ago), the liberal elites (dnc) have since adopted these views to get re-elected, even though they don't really care about these issues if it threatens their wealth. They realized if they focus solely on identity issues and ignore material struggle, they can act like they are progressive when in reality they oppose progressive movements. The right has since used the liberal elites' (Democrats) defense of minorities as a means to stir up bigoted dissent and rally their base, thereby creating the "culture wars" and the common modern right wing mindset that the left's "woke agenda" controls everything, thereby convincing people to hate minorities again for "controlling what you can say." The real progressive movement of course supports bernie and aoc, who champion the rights of all minorities and the working class, including the disillusioned white people who voted for trump, and the disillusioned poc queers who voted biden. Both the Democrats and the right ignore the real progressive message because it actually seeks to liberate all people from the control of the rich and powerful.

I'm pretty sure he was using the term liberal in the original/non-American sense, and in that case he's right to call centrists and democrats liberals, that's what they are. And it was LGBT people themselves, workers themselves, and women themselves (typically with the help of radicals such as communists) who did most of the work for these real-world gains. Liberalism even in progressive forms has always been feeble, inadequate, timid about these improvements, especially in regards to worker's rights.

I actually appreciate his view on domestic politics and how it intertwines with foreign policy. We’re (all the world) in a multi faceted conflict who’s targets are ourselves and our leaders. In the US, both parties think they’re in an existential crisis because of the opposition and their viewpoints but the reality is, the side with the stronghold on the bureaucracy is that who controls the country, and today that’s the American far left. The conflict presents itself as Left vs. Right, but what it really is Moderates vs. Extremists. The moderates are morally sound, mostly blue collar, and objectively correct in how they consume the raw data. The Extremists are representative of the far left and the far right. They experience the angst with bias and feel the need to associate with a group, this has resulted in the violence you see from the Antifa type and the Proud Boys type. Now the next tier of this conflict is in governance, it’s worth noting that this country isn’t a Democracy nor a Constitutional Republic. There are 2 factions fighting for control, they’re the Duopoly that is the Democrats and Republicans and then there’s the far right. This intergovernmental conflict mirrors the one happening outside of Washington- Moderates vs. Extremists, although without the context you’d think the far right were the extremists. The supposed “far right” are actually the next iteration of the progressive movement, and before going further it’s worth mentioning that they are not representative of the far right extremists using violence to meet their ends. This new right wing progressivism is in response to the overshadowing power of the duopoly, a duopoly that has total control over the military, media, economy, education, and system of governance. At the current time, because people are becoming enlightened to this reality, division is stoked with intensity because the appropriate response to our situation is radical in nature, a truth that must be accepted. The problem is, the conflict between people is applied to the conflict between legislators and they’re two completely different battles with two completely different motives. The conflict between people implies that we live in a Constitutional Republic and the conflict between legislators implies that we do not. It is the moderate of people, both “on” the left and right who are pushing this agenda through with no formal representation because both parties share in the fruits that are beared in us not knowing or understanding this intergovernmental conflict. Now taking this information, you can apply it to every single country on the planet, conflicts among moderate and extreme people, controlled by a government who is unrepresentative of either side and their values who are now being challenged by small minority groups of “radicals”. Whether it’s Israel today or Brazil tomorrow, it all boils down to a conflict amongst classes who are coerced into fighting amongst each other then against each other resulting in two parallel realities in contradiction to each other.

I like this analysis from Zizek but I’d like to point out that not only left vs right is outdated but class conflict politics is also. the modern PC liberals aren’t obfuscating class differences, they just ran out of things to do politics on; liberalism actually ended and the project has nothing left to accomplish. So I don’t think it’s even useful to think it’s about class anymore, it’s purely a vanity project that liberals continue because the fact is that their rich and still haven’t found meaning. The right is now seen has the more class conscious party purely because the left got all the power, not because class itself is the issue.
