Slayer Audition - Proscriptor of ABSU - Hell Awaits

I asked Steve Asheim after a Deicide show about this and he said that apparently Slayer said Proscriptor was to fast and to weird. Perfect.

+EFLander I once read somewhere that he also broke a cymbal during the audition from playing so hard, but have no idea if that's true... In any case Proscriptor's style is way more progressive and his artistic leanings tend to be far more into the occult and mythological stuff when he's writing songs, so I don't think he'd ever really fit in with Slayer perfectly. If they had done just one album, however, it would have been interesting to hear. IMO Givens is like the extreme metal version of Phil Collins... :P

boobengarden666 If you mean Proscriptor, I just saw one where he actually appeared to be fairly human and some hot girl was asking him questions about his work and he made a fair attempt at answering some questions regarding the various spellings/titles of his albums and trying to describe the differences between Sumerian/Babylonian/Mesopotamian whatever etc. myths and why he was into what he was into... etc... it's all ridiculously esoteric but he's still a great artist. Probably has done wayyyyyy more drugs than me....

Judging from his Slayer-clips Proscriptor should've gotten the job(I've seen the other auditions) IMO. There must've been some other reason than "just" the playing, which i definitely would get, gotta have the chemistry too. But musically he nailed this, made it look like child's play playing Lombardo-stuff(not quite the Lombardo groove here, but who else has that, let's be honest..and, this is under huge pressure, keep in mind). An auditioning for a big band(one that you're a huge fan of as well, as Proscriptor here obviously), has got to be SO hard! Take that into consideration when judging him. This man plays incredibly demanding extreme drumming, while at the same time doing the extreme vocals, that just requires talent. He's IMO the best in metal doing that, can't think of a more skillful person. In a sense i do agree with people here saying he's just too good for Slayer. But this is Slayer. He's probably a huge fan, and should've gotten that position. Having to "lower the demands" musically wouldn't have probably bothered Proscriptor that much...or at all ;)

Proscriptor was on the tempo and he nailed it, better yet he made the guitarist break a sweat by speeding up for sure, cus he was playing like he was bored to death.

Nah but there is such a thing as playing too fast it sounds rushed. Felt out of sync. Maybe the guitar needed to be louder so he can stay in time with Kerry. I've done it myself when I couldn't hear the guitar at a venue and shit. That's usually when you get the look like yo slow down.

@@oopsydaizi3s824 Ok, this is what I wanted to say and I'm not coming back to this anymore: if you can play Dave Lombardo faster than Dave Lombardo with precision (and the guy is sharp, faster than you're accustomed to for the song, but precise), you must be a great drummer. He played it as he feels it, that's his style. Listen to Absu, you'll see what I mean. He didn't rush it, just played it faster, and I could hear Kerry struggling to keep up, so I giggled a bit. I admit, I was never a big Kerry King fan, I always thought Hannemann was waaay better, both technique-wise and riff-wise.

I have all the respect in the world for Lombardo, and he is definitely one of the best, but Proscriptor is marginally better in all aspects. okokok there is a poin for kerry to play his solo and that is that the drummer should know the song even if kerrry took out a harmonica and started doing blues scales over it hes expecting the drummer to play hell awaits. its acctually a BASIC thing that all band members do,reherse withot one guitar or vocals, or bass to ensure everybody knows the song and no matter what happens the song will go on. so when the rythm guitar dissapears its all up to this drummer to count and keeep it together. this is basic musical knowledge. if you play a song in front of an aidience you have to know yhe song. acctually i think Prince does it best, you can not be a member if you dont know the tunes on all instruments used within the song. so if there is violin and trumpet and you pla the triangle, then you should know their parts to

But practicing isn’t live at the Budakan either dude. You should be breaking down your songs - especially if you are jamming with someone BRAND NEW. You don’t play a song beginningto end til you have it all down. It is really simple: break down the pieces into sections, once you’ve got them down, fit them together. A song on an album was, typically, one take out of however many; simply put it is just one complete song. You def can’t expect a musician to come into a rehearsal - for the first time - and just know everyone else’s part; for one thing, all musicians are different, just as people are, and songs have a way 0f changing over time - especially older songs change as they re played over and over again (even monolithic power chord thrash metal). I’ve loved Slayer since I first heard them in the mid 80’s and it was DL’s solo on Live Undead that freaking altered what drumming is to me big time.

I once read in Absu's official site that dave lombardo was auditioned behind closed doors instead of playing where the rest of the drummers played. Proscriptor couldn't make because of his luck of stamina (that's what slayer said). In conclusion, it's all about the original line up....(satisfies fans and ,brings more cash and builds momentum for upcoming releases).(sorry for my bad english)

They were just jamming. Whether he fucked up the ending of the song is irrelevant to anything. He got the entire song down for the most part, plus he was playing it at the exact speed they do live anyway. Yeah he dropped a stick, but most drummers drop sticks all the time during performances and no one notices.
