Actually, Metallica's debut album "Kill 'em all" came out in mid- 1983... just months before Slayer's debut album 'Show no mercy' in late '83... Anthrax's debut album 'Fistful of metal' came out early 1984 (on Megaforce Records, same label as Metallica)... Megadeth was signed in 1985 and recorded their debut album "Killing is my business..." that year, released in mid '85... Exodus recorded 'Bonded by blood' in 1984, but it was not released until mid-1985... Those were the first thrash metal records 🤘🤘 However, there were metal albums that pre-dated Metallica's debut album in 1983, delivered by bands that helped inspire thrash metal... Motorhead was the obvious inspiration, playing faster than most in 1979 - 1983... Also from the UK (besides Judas Priest, Iron Maiden & Saxon), u had Venom... their albums 'Welcome to hell' (1981) and 'Black metal' (1982) were a huge inspiration to thrash metal... Raven also brought the aggression w/ 'Rock til you drop' (1981)... 'Wiped out' (1982) and 'All for one' (1983)... Germany's Accept were also cranking up the volume since 1979, and their 4th album 'Restless & wild' (1982) was a landmark album that doesn't get enough credit. Manowar was formed in 1981 and debuted in 1982 w/ the album 'Battle Hymns'... the record was not a success, and Manowar was dropped by their label... They signed w/ Megaforce Records in America and released 'Into glory ride' in 1983. Canadian bands also brought the heat w/ Anvil releasing "Hard n' heavy" in 1981... 'Metal on metal' in 1982... and 'Forged in fire' in 1983... Exciter released 'Heavy metal maniac' in 1983 and 'Violence and force' in early 1984... Voivod released 'War & Pain' in 1984... followed by 'Roooaaaarrr' (1986)... None of these bands should be overlooked for their contributions to the extreme metal scene.

The guitar work in old school metal always reminds me of the string section of an orchestra, or more prominently; the horn sections of a film score. I get the same visceral yet uplifting vibe I feel when I hear the trumpets and trombones in something like Conan the Barbarian, Lord of the Rings, or something set in ancient or fantasy settings. Big, bombastic, triumphant, and victorious. Another good example of that kind of fanfare is Ides of March by Iron Maiden. It's the intro track to their Killers album.

Black Magic and Die by the Sword off this album. Haunting the Chapel is an extended play album of songs that didn't make the first album.... Haunting the Chapel, Chemical Warfare and Captor of Sin are all "bangers", however their next album Hell Awaits really takes a turn more into the brutal thrash and really amplifies their talents as a band. The opening track to this album has one hell of a intro (sounds similar to one of the numerous openings of headbangers ball on MTV which is actually Prongs Lost and Found song), At Dawn They Sleep, Crypts of Eternity and Praise of Death are my favorites. 🤘😎🤘

Yeah those two songs realistically are listenable off S.N.M. They've been my favorite band since about '88, I just tried to listen to S.N.M. to remember if any were better than I remembered to recommend to these guys...its all pretty bad jeez. Of all those early 80s thrash debuts Kill Em All is the only one I still get excited when I hear it.
@r.deanmcknight136
@r.deanmcknight136 Жыл бұрын
@@gentelmanjunkie542 well considering how thrash has evolved since then yeah it would be horrible when compared to bands today but back then that shit was mind blowing. I grew up in the 70's and got to experience how metal evolved over the years but personally those same songs are still epic. Of course Kill em All was an awesome album but there's a reason why Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth and Anthrax became the big 4, each had their own style of thrash that was unique to other thrash bands that pretty much had that generic style of thrash.

What amazes me about this song/album is that Slayer waded their way out of all the bands that sounded just like this back then. Plenty of bands at that time had this same sound, but apparently Slayer is the only band that learned to evolve and continue to dominate. A simply amazing accomplishment.

I can't agree. But they had some of the best guitar riffs each year they released an album in the 80's. There however are better riffs by many other 80's thrash bands, but they often came after Slayer had raised the bar. Slayer were thrash trend-setters, but they were always overcome by somebody

The "early" thrash sound was amazing: Slayer - Show No Mercy, Metallica - Kill Em All; Exodus - Bonded by Blood; Megadeth - Killing Is My Business Back then they still tuned in standard, played predominantly blues or pentatonic scales, and had unhinged vocals full of raw voice cracks and goofy lyrics, and the NWOBHM and punk influences were much more clearly evident. Unfortunately it didn't last long, as lyrical content became more serious, the strings were down tuned more and more every album, traces of blues influence were virtually eliminated, and every thrash band was just trying to 1-up each other in brutality which was a dead-end game that ultimately just lead to thrash being completely replaced by death metal and grindcore. If I'm in the mood for heavy music I go for death metal, but when I'm in the mood for thrash, it's the early 80s thrash records like this that I reach for, a short-lived and unfortunately forgotten sound
@Thijscube
@Thijscube Жыл бұрын
@@SuperTugz I think the sound you're looking for is more speed metal than thrash and it's not forgotten at all! Check out bands like Ranger, Wraith, Evil Invaders, Hellripper and Skull Fist. I think the intro would go great with a tv show or movie introducing an extremely badass and monstrously evil villain.

slayer were extremely young here on this album - defining their sound and vocals - this is my favourite slayer album due to its rawness and appreciation for a bunch of kids just smashing it out

That was a great point George made about the vocals and different genres. I think with metal, It's more about the 'character' of the vocals rather than any innate singing ability and the instrumentation takes precedence over everything else. It's just like with horror movies going in you know what to expect. The harsh vocals just 'fit' with the overall theme of the music.

Exactly! As metal music evolved into more extremism in the instruments and song structures the vocals had to adapt to fit in with the imagery being created. I remember when Carcass hit the scene and their three vocalist style extreme came out. "Reek of Putrefaction," was exciting and mysterious. Never heard anything that extreme. But it began the next evolution in vocal performances. Its not "singing," but its an instrument.

@@theriomrasputin8233 Yes, Carcass Is a great example of what I mean by 'character.' The High and low vocals trading off one another along with the gruesome lyrics like two 'Mad surgeons' from hell in the operating room, lol. Symphonies of Sickness Is my all time favorite from them. Also doesn't hurt that the music is great as well. I think alotta people don't realize how much blues Influence Is In Carcass mainly because of Bill Steer. He was actually in a straight up blues rock band with clean vocals for many years (Firebird) while Carcass was on hiatus. But yeah, definitely nothing beats the old school and I think that element of character is what's missing from a lot of bands today. You could play me just about any vocal track of any Death Metal band from the golden era and I can tell you exactly who it is. I think that's why I can't stand Metalcore (aside from the stale, mechanical production and prerequisite, goofy, breakdowns they have to have in every song) but every vocalist from every band sounds like the exact same teenager having a temper tantrum In his bedroom because his parents shut off his XBOX account, lol.

You guys SERIOUSLY need to react to Forbidden if you haven't already. One of the all time best 80s thrash bands I think you would really like the vocals and its very intricate guitar work as well, but still thrash as a Mofo!!! Songs I would recommend would be Through Eyes of Glass, Chalice of Blood, Infinite, Off the Edge, I mean I could go on but PLEASE react to them!!! 🙏 I am willing to bet you will really dig it! Like if you agree! 👇

Slayer was a heavily punk influenced band. You are not wrong for getting a punk feel, especially from their earlier stuff.

I bought this album when I was like 12 years old. I was looking for the most brutally evil face ripping thing I could find. Been a fan ever since. You mention that there are a lot of riffs in this, but a lot of the riffs in the middle and end of the song call back to elements in riffs in the intro and earlier in the song. Cool compositional flex for a band that were basically teenagers at the time. Anyway, FUCKIN'SLAYERRRRRR!
