That's Dave Lombardo on drums, and he's arguably one of the best metal drummers of all time and a huge influence on the many who came up after him. Those fills were very creative and a bit different from what would normally be done for music in this genre.

Love your in-depth and detailed analysis. And your description of the feelings and mental imagery songs give you. And you are correct Slayer has always been mixed guitar heavy as the guitar is the main driving sound of the band. And most metal really. With the exception maybe of the South of Heaven album which is their album showcasing Dave Lombardo the drummer. This song is also mainly a drum song. And yes Slayer solos have a definitive sound that is characteristic and trademark to the band. I call them tormented solos. As the notes are purposefully chaotic and tormented sounding.

I'm an old metal head, and instrumental based improvisation guitarist, at it for over 33 years. I have mellowed out stylistically over the years, maturing into the Bitches Brew Miles Davis brand of heart attack rock fusion, and the boogie woogie blues, jazz, rock, funk stylings of Jimi Hendrix. & yet I still tend to fall back on my foundational metal upbringing every now and then where Ozzy Osbourne's guitarist Randy Rhoads put his G.O.A.T. high water mark way up on the absolute peak of heavy metal musicianship. The whole Seasons in the Abyss album specifically, in particular, is unequivocally, the most listenable Slayer album, of all the albums, in Slayers entire catalog. The Season of the Abyss album, should ranked amongst the top 10 albums of the entire 1990's decade, and it should be listened to straight through, in its whole entirety, several times, from front to back. Someone here in the comments, hit the nail right on the head, by saying that most Slayer songs are ruined, to the casual listener, due the Slayers penchant toward foreboding primally screamed vocals and dark lyrics, which tend to interfere with the bands focused raw heavy instrumental vibe, Slayers not anything quite approaching the degree that Sepultura's vocalizations, which often ruin the whole bands amazing raw heavy instrumental vibes. To my ear, the lyrics and vocals on Season in Abyss are the most tolerable, and mainstream that Slayer had ever gotten... Some other high level 1990's metal albums, that a jazz head should really have listen to, in their whole entirety, are listed in no particular order: Slayer's-Seasons of the Abyss, Sepultura's-Chaos A.D., Pantera's-Vulgar Display of Power, and Cowboys from Hell, Testament's-Low, Life of Agony's-River Runs Red, Megadeth's-Rust in Peace, and Countdown to Extinction albums, Carcass's-Heartwork, Suicidal Tendencies-Lights.Camera.Revolution, Rage Against the Machine's-Self Titled album, Corrosion of Conformity's Deliverance... ...& in roundin out the 1990's somebody should mention some alternative metal geniuses, Primus's Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Pork Soda, The Red Hot Chilli Pepper's-Blood Sugar Sex Magik, NOFX's-White Trash Two Heebs and a Bean, Sound Garden's-Badmotorfinger, and Superunknown albums, Pearl Jam's-Ten, Tool's-Undertow albums...8)

One of the Slayer tracks I am a huge fan of. I've been through multiple full albums of theirs on youtube and while musically I dig just about all of it, its the vocals that kill it for me in enjoying the material. That is kind of why I usually say Slayer is an important band in metal but its not for everyone and not a good gateway band to introduce new people to metal. They strike me as that band that after you have someone liking metal or a particular sound in metal then you go hey check out Slayer if you are liking ___.

It's interesting about solos. Yes, a lot of solos are written improvising around the theme or idea in the studio, they save the best bits and build upon them until they arrive at something they are really happy with. And in live shows there is often a bit of on the spot improvisation depending on what the particular guitarist likes to do. BUT it can be a double edged sword, because fans fall in love with the way the solo was played on the album and can be disappointed if the guitarist does something that is too different.

Idk if there's a correct meaning of the song, but the intro to me sounds very ceremonial, as if leading to some event. The chorus seems to be about releasing yourself to a bigger force. Like sacrificing your soul or conscience being to some Eldridge entity. Just my thoughts. Also, could you react to Slayer's "Skeletons of Society" of the same album? Musically, it's probably their simplest song but it has such a nice groove, and great lyrics.

I do agree about the dueling guitars complementing each other, the one point I want to point out about how Dave has that jazz elements about how he plays and the different variations of rhythm he puts into the different songs that no one can compare It is true about how he says about iron maiden classic story telling

As someone coming from a jazz background, you really need to react to some Testament. Alex Skolnick's playing would be right up your ally. He left the band for a time to study Jazz and formed a Jazz trio in NYC before coming back to Rock with the Trans-Siberian Orchestra before eventually re-joining Testament. I guarantee that if you listen to a few Testament songs you will hear the jazz influence in his playing. He doesn't sound like any other metal guitarist. Check out 'The Ballad'.

When time and effort are put into solos, they do complete the song/story. There's another version of this song where the first solo was different and keyboards was added (near the intro and during the outro). Obviously, the final take was a much better fit, and honestly, the original solo sounded sloppy.

I’ll probably get killed for this comment. But whatever... i like slayer, but the reason I don’t love slayer is the guitar solos. The solos are usually so chaotic and don’t really fit the song. They just kind of go off in their own direction. Away from the structure of the song. Not all of their songs, but most.
