A lot of heavier metal relies on diminished and octotonic scales, as well as rapid modal interchange between modes with opposite degrees (like the Major 2nd and Minor 3rd in Natural Minor and the Minor 2nd and Major 3rd in Phrygian Dominant). Likewise if you ever look up "The Metallica scale" people will talk about a 10 note scale which is really more like a combination of Aeolian and Locrian. Most metal writers with just a little bit of theory knowledge will just call this stuff "Chromatic," but that's a little misleading if you look at it from a classical perspective because we are often talking about rather large leaps. I find it's very similar to Bartok's concept of "polymodal chromaticism." I like how you are less fixated on chord progressions, because a lot (not all) of metal is focused on playing melodies anywhere in the mode, using pedal point on the root to ground it, like raga or modal jazz. I think your ear is improving for that kind of thing. I recommend War Ensemble from Slayer on this same album. It's significantly faster, but I you really focus on the intervals and their place in the rhythm, you'll see something powerfully expressive, and what it's expressing is very dark.

For more Slayer-y goodness, I'd recommend Dead Skin Mask from the same album. Even 32 years later, it still sends a chill down my spine every time. Others you might want to check out should include War Ensemble, Bloodline, Mandatory Suicide, South of Heaven and, of course, Rainin' Blood (from the album Reign In Blood. Do you see what they did there?). Alternatively, if you wang something a bit shorter, try Necrophobic (also from Reign In Blood). Two verses, two solos, three choruses in 1'38". It's . . . frenetic.

One of the aspects that has always impressed me a lot in this song, aside from the excellent level of composition and the band's beautiful overall sound, is dave Lombardo's drumming, which is not limited to a technical show but is very musical. Aside from the speed of some of the drum rolls or double bass drum parts, some of his accents have incredible impact and sound like a slap in the face (in a good sense). I'd add a couple of more, stuff like 'Mandatory Suicide' and 'Skeletons of Society' have really great solos for the songs.

Divine Intervention solos are my favorite. Incredible, like everything in this song, just a shame Dave Lombardo didn't play on it ^^

The magic of Slayer are not the solos. Its the insanity of the music. If you dont hear the genious in Jeff Hanneman you dont fucking understand music

Unlike other 'Classical musician reaction/analysis' videos on You Tube, I get the impression that Doug's a rock fan.

Doug, cool vids. Tom Araya the Vocalist/ Bassist was actually a Respiratory Therapist which is how Slayer funded their first album. Albums South of Heaven and Seasons are my faves but Diehards love Rein in Blood. 🤟

Doug, those insane fills that Dave was playing are called quadruplets, two on the hands followed by two on the feet, RH, LH, R-KICK, L-KICK, now rinse and repeat as fast as you possibly can. On a few of those fills Dave starts the fill with the left hand on the snare. KILLER!!!!!!

I love all eras of Slayer. This is one of the few songs with solos that are almost, dare I say it, melodic.

There solos are horrible they have no clue wat key there in lol

@@Keith_from_LBC no I fully understand great metal bands and what separates bands like megadeth Metallica and even anthrax for that matter is some sort of musical knowledge and theory in their lead playing wich slayer has zerooooooo they hit harmonics and do bar dives and have barely hit a note in key, so I take it your not a musician or you would clearly know this,it fits what their doing and it’s a good thing because if they tried to jam with any other band or different type of musicians they would fail miserably,after 40 years you would think they would try to learn one proper scale lol
@billhinsperger81202 жыл бұрын
@@Hell-Awaits awwww muffin the old your spelling sucks routine when you got butthurt cause your band has no musical knowledge whatsoever, actually I did learn to spell a bit in 40 years unlike slayers inability to learn any music theory or a scale in 40 years lol
