The Hunter was re-popularized by Hidetsugu Ueno of Bar High Five in Tokyo. He told me the story when he served me my very first Hunter (and my last drink in Tokyo to date) back in 2014. An Japanese bar industry magazine came to the primary Ginza bartenders to ask for their "favorite nitecap cocktail." By the time they got to Ueno-san, he assumed that the other bartenders had all provided their own tweaks on the Manhattan (and he was right), so he decided to help out the article's author (who was panicking a bit) by providing something more novel with a Hunter (which is actually a forgotten classic). Ueno-san seems to gravitate to highly complex two-ingredient cocktails (the Alaska or the Bamboo, for example), and FWIW, his version of the Hunter is 2 parts bourbon and 1 part Heering, stirred, and served in a double highball over a block of hard, clear, ice (no garnish). If you like the cocktail, you should try this version as a baseline before tarting it up with luxardo and bitters (although, to each his own). It's amazing how much depth and complexity you can get out of two liquors. Also FWIW, Ueno used a Japan-market-only high proof Ezra Brooks as his standard bourbon, primarily because it didn't cloud when stored cold and played nice in cocktails. Heering actually gave him an award in 2020, probably because of the incredible reach Ueno-san has with professionals around the world (www.barbizmag.com/news/high-five-bar-receives-heering-legend-of-the-list-special-award/).

This drink is amazing! I copied you exactly to the point of even finding 5.5oz coup glasses, found them at crate and barrel for $4.95 each. I love an old fashioned and this hunter drink is similar yet different. It has the hint of orange from the orange bitters, but the cherry liquors in this pull out that cherry note just enough to set it apart from an old fashioned. Super nice for a change of pace. I think this is my new bourbon cocktail. Thanks for doing things like this!!!!

I make something very similar to that; In mixing glass combine 1.5 ounces of your favorite cocktail bourbon, 1 ounce Zirbenz (Stone Pine Liqueur), 1/2 ounce Luxardo, 2 dashes orange bitters. Add ice & gentle stir. Pour into rocks glass. Place rocks glass under a smoking hood and infuse with smoke (I like using cherry wood pellets). Garnish with a cherry.

Love the idea here. For me this was way too syrupy for my palate. I did a riff on it and found a happy spot for what I was expecting: 1 1/2 oz WT Rare Breed 3/8 oz Maraschino 1/4 oz cherry herring 4 dash orange bitters Orange peel expressed + garnish Maraschino cherry garnish Served over cube for extra dilution or longer (~1 minute) stirring time It reminds me of a very cherry influenced old fashioned. the orange peel oil adds a balance to the thick cherry flavor while the extra spice of the Wild Turkey also tries to add some kick, spice, and backbone to the two liqueurs. Cheers!

If you are interested…the “sentimental journey”. Express an orange peel and place it n the glass, and add 5 dashes of angostura bitters to the peel, and a small amount of ice or one large cube. In a mixing glass stir to chill 2.25 oz of your favorite bourbon, 1/2oz of Benedictine, 1/3oz of frangelico, & 1/6oz of Graham’s six grapes port. Strain and enjoy. I didn't use the Russell's SB...so I played around with WT101, Elijah Craig Barrel Strength A121, and my 2020 George T. I just made a version of this, though I had to make a few substitutions. I didn't have Heerings so I used a cherry wine called "Kijafa" that was sitting in the back of my liquor cabinet, and I used a chocolate bitters instead of the orange bitters. Overall I like the idea, all the cherry flavors play very nice with the bourbon. This first version came out a bit too sweet, but with a few tweaks I think it will be a very nice cocktail indeed.

I was looking for something interesting to drink tonight and landed on this one. Very good cocktail. I tried one with Russell's Reserve standard 90 proof. It was pretty decent. I then tried one with 1792 small batch and that was ever better! I think it worked better cause 1792 had just a slight bit more proof and I think it drinks a little hot for its' proof anyway. So I think 1792 might be a good option for people looking to make this with a bourbon under 100 proof.

I have not heard of this one will definitely need to give it a go. Wow--you weren't kidding. This is absolutely delicious! We couldn't find Russell's so we used Four Roses Single Barrel. What other bourbons would you suggest for this cocktail?

Truly I think your choice was a fabulous pick! I want to try that in the cocktail. Nice ABV, higher rye whiskey, great flavor. I think the only recommendation I would have in choosing a bourbon is make sure it’s 100 proof or higher. If not I think the bourbon will wash out.

Luxardo and Cheery Herring... two of my favs! and all in one cocktail?... whats not to love? I made this right after I watched this video. I used OGD 114(RR not on hand) served over a block of clear ice in a rocks glass. I would love to add some egg white like in a Boston Sour to get that awesome creamy texture and mouthfeel! Old Fashioned, Whiskey Sour/Boston Sour, Gold Rush have been my favs... but I think The Hunter just might have taken the #1 spot!

I have a pretty well stocked bar, but made a special trip to Total wine to make this one. I have plenty of Bourbon, but since I was there and they had Russell's(why not)! I have to say I really like it!

Not a big fan of orange bitters compared to others but I'll give this a try. I think black walnut or chocolate bitters might be better! Love both of those in my manhattans

Make it your own! Use the bitters you enjoy.

Great cocktail. Tried it for the first time over New Year's. Only difference was I used Old 55(local to me, 115 proof) Single Barrel Bourbon and found some cherries a bit less spendy than Luxardo's. Legit warning: pace yourself.

Lol you are correct on that! Legit 2 of those and I am done.
