Sample: Seven adult males and two adult females. Five of them were studied intensively while the data gathered from the other four was minimal. Sampling technique: Opportunity sampling. Our body follows two types of sleep: REM (rapid eye movement) sleep and nREM (non-rapid eye movement) sleep.

could you explain what operationalize means in psychology context , say you get a question to operationalize the independent variables of an experiment
@DaveMeaker

To operationalise means to clearly define something. For instance, look at this hypothesis: "Teenage girls will have a significantly better memory than teenage boys." This is not operationalised because it is too vague. What does "teenage" mean? What type of memory? And so on. To operationalise this hypothesis, we might say something like: "14 and 15-year-old schoolgirls will be able to remember simple historical facts better over a three-week period than boys of the same age." Now we have clearly defined the hypothesis by stating parameters. It's also necessary to operationalise the steps taken in an experiment. As an example, look at the Canli et al. study. The subjects were all healthy right-handed women, they were all positioned in exactly the same way in the scanner by means of a bite bar, they each saw the same slides each of which was presented for exactly the same amount of time, the responses they had to give were very specific, etc. Making sure that all those details were in place, was operationalising the experiment. And the outcome of properly operationalising an experiment is that you very much reduce the possibility of extraneous variables confounding the data. For instance, what if some of the subjects had health problems? Those might skew the data and affect the result. So, you operationalise an experiment to make sure that the data you get are only the result of what you are testing, and not some other factor that is creeping in. Hope that was helpful.

Further to that, the independent variable or variables of an experiment will follow on from the hypothesis. An independent variable from my previously stated hypothesis might be: "30 point history facts test given three weeks after teaching". The dependent variable might be: "Test results differences between boys and girls". How would you operationalise this experiment? david.meaker@englishaware.com

This dude is good but the only thing is he barely said the weaknesses. My teacher points out probably every single weakness that there could be but he doesn’t really do that
