Hey Kevin, thanks for sharing your thoughts on this topic :) Just for context after reading some of the comments on here, I'm a Canadian trained resident doctor, who trained at a 3 year school. I was studying for step 2 with limited time and on a relatively busy residency rotation. Much of what's tested on the USMLEs is either skipped entirely by the Canadian MCCQE 1 exam (Canadian boards) or covered in greater detail by the American system. Most Canadian medical school programs also have been staying away from the NBME board exams during clerkship for certain rotations. As a result, there was a lot to learn in limited time - most people will not need to do this for their Step 2. In any case, best of luck to all!

Great video and love that you’re bringing an important issue up for us all to discuss! This context is also helpful thanks for clarifying

Med school’s not that demanding. Apart from surgery, where I was at the hospital at 0400 six days a week (and that was only half the rotation), I have never been sleep deprived for more than a day or two unless it was because I mismanaged my time.

@Rick Sin Good point. It is more accurate to say that, in general, I feel that med school is less demanding than many make it out to be. There is no doubt med school has it's challenges, with specific goals and specific periods of time requiring serious commitment and sacrifice. Also, everybody has their own thresholds and baseline tolerance for slogging through some of the drudgery.

just what we need, people who are making life and death decisions on 2 hours of sleep while cramming for boards.

Only 2-5 hours a night while studying for step 2?? It really is not that bad, imo if someone is getting that little sleep they are doing something wrong, either in daily time management or in overall strategic planning (ie taking the exam at a busy period of school)

Trauma surgery call intern year was 18 on, 6 off … fun rotation but most happened at night so head to the call room and catch sleep during the day.

Also used to run the long hallway between my hospital and the VA on a 30 minute break at 3 am

Being a Canadian med student, I know that this is not the norm. Knowing that Gianluca overloaded his schedule to pass the USMLE makes sense that he would have less time to sleep. I've only had less than 5 hours of sleep due to some call shifts, most of the time I get 7-9 hours as a Canadian med student (MS4 currently).

I have spoken to so many doctors and younger doctors aswell about pros and cons, and I have never ever heard anything about sleep deprivation. This must be highly subjective or only apply to the us

Thank you for another AMAZING video! Could you please talk about how your demeanor could affect your success rate? I am a very positive person but growing up with European parents I definitely turned out more quiet (as in I use a lower voice volume but I convey the same excitmenet with words/gestures!) and tend to be less proactive and listen/analyse many details before reacting compared go my american friends I find. I am soo worried if this can be very negative in interviews and especially for rotations and residency interviews :( I can definitely work on these qualities though!! Curious how much this type of behavior will look like to supervisors, thank you so much for the amazing content again!

i don’t recommend stimulant use, as a pre-med student it makes you lenient on this crutch and you dig yourself into a much deeper hole

Funny how I see this video when I’ve been sleeping five hours a day and I’m waking up at 4am to study .. that time you could be sleeping is definitely somewhere there but you used it to watch Netflix or something 💀 (me rn)

Dawg I made it through basic sciences with 8 hours of sleep every night. Passed all my block exams, step 1 and step 2. I slept just as much during my rotations, maybe less during surgery residency. 😂 Your brain needs rest
