I don't know who you mean by "the man", but I'm assuming you mean Matt PIke. I'm pretty sure he is just using the Marshall. The only amps I've seen him use are a Green (Matamp) head (during his time with Sleep), a Soldano SLO-100, a Marshall Kerry King JCM800 (for a short time) and a Blackstar head (for a very short time). This video was from the time when he was using the KK800 - so I doubt the Orange or the Mesa are his.

Such intoxicating music, a real conduit to take you to another mental place. It reminds me of a gig I went to a few years ago, a solo show by Colin Stetson (an experimental sax player). I could tell that he goes into a kind of 'flow' state while performing, and in between one particularly long, difficult song and another I was close enough to the stage to hear him softly say "I wish you could all feel what I feel". To me, that said it all - he performs almost more for himself than for the crowd, and that is exactly why it's excellent. The best musical acts do this, and Sleep is no different. You can tell they're just IN IT, in their own sonic behemoth creation.

yeh thats the thing - no bullshit just melting hot power tubes and heavy roaring riffs - I love how they are themselves not pretending to be someone. lol pussy tuning.. guitar is in c tuning. For it to sound cool... must be loud!!!!!!!! I play in both e flat, i perfer c# tuning (black sabbeth) :D Fuck the tone is fricken sweet tho!!! Pike is fucken a amazing guitar player so i don't think it matters the tuning.

Yup, Matt rocks C standard tuning on .12 - .56 gauge strings with a wound .24 on the 3rd string. Gotta pump it up with some fuzz on an all tube amp to get that monster tone. God I love his techniques, the man has got mad skills!
