Such intoxicating music, a real conduit to take you to another mental place. It reminds me of a gig I went to a few years ago, a solo show by Colin Stetson (an experimental sax player). I could tell that he goes into a kind of 'flow' state while performing, and in between one particularly long, difficult song and another I was close enough to the stage to hear him softly say "I wish you could all feel what I feel". To me, that said it all - he performs almost more for himself than for the crowd, and that is exactly why it's excellent. The best musical acts do this, and Sleep is no different. You can tell they're just IN IT, in their own sonic behemoth creation.

This was just a treat. What a band - wow!!

The overlooked magic to their sound is the drums playing as far behind the beat as possible. They are the only band I can listen to again. Just like 25 years ago.

yeah! thanks for this. I'm joining the party after some time off this type of music. Sleep, Electric Wizard, Sunn O))), even the more mainstream stylings of Monster Magnet. The grind of it all eventually gets you somewhere. I don't know exactly where, but I like it.

I gravitate to these bands cuz for some reason I'd rather not listen to all the throaty vocalists. But throaty guitars and Bass, yes.

yeh thats the thing - no bullshit just melting hot power tubes and heavy roaring riffs - I love how they are themselves not pretending to be someone. Mat Pike is a hero warrior shaped by a river of beer and seasoned in super heavy sound... hardened in smoke to :D - bless them - bands like them are a new hope for a real music. Who da fuck cares if its E or C - make music with 5 notes - important thing he uses a "Man tuning" as opossite of "pussy tuning" !peace!
@jeremyrebelka10 жыл бұрын
Ask Mat Pike - I have seen the interview - he said he don't use it - he must be right ;)

lol pussy tuning.. guitar is in c tuning. For it to sound cool... must be loud!!!!!!!! I play in both e flat, i perfer c# tuning (black sabbeth) :D Fuck the tone is fricken sweet tho!!! Pike is fucken a amazing guitar player so i don't think it matters the tuning.

Yup, Matt rocks C standard tuning on .12 - .56 gauge strings with a wound .24 on the 3rd string. Gotta pump it up with some fuzz on an all tube amp to get that monster tone. God I love his techniques, the man has got mad skills!
