I had listened to this song several times before watching the music video, and seeing those words flash on the screen felt simultaneously like a hug and like an icicle stabbed into my chest. He gives so much to us in his music, by wearing the mask, it feels like we can feel through him, you can see yourself reflected back, and he wants us to be able to have that comfort, even though he's scared too. We can be scared together, we can feel the pain together. I love Sleep Token

Ehhh, not by a long shot. I think you can only say this if you haven't heard their whole discography. Music is subjective, and it's perfectly valid if this is the song that speaks to you on those levels most. Saying this is THE top one completely undermines Sleep Token as a whole, or just purely misunderstands the intention of each song, which is to have multiple, or 'double' meanings. If one were to argue this song is their most vulnerable as the people behind ST themselves, then that might be right. But it's definitely not the most heavy in other regards. Check out their earlier releases like One, Two, and Jaws. There's already some stuff there that's undeniably very high on the scale, but that's not all.

The way that Vessel portays the idea in the lyrics of this song is absolutely beautiful and incredibly devastating upon further reflection. I was just reading somewhere that "city of ice" is another term for the bottom of the ocean, and the "burning cathedrals" refer to natural hydrothermal vents that emit chemicals which deep sea creatures feed off of (I remember learning about this from The Magic School Bus, but the terms are new to me), while "fall for me" refers to both falling in love and "fallen whales," ie whale corpses which float to the bottom of the ocean which those same sea creatures feed off of, circle of life and all that. If that's the case, then the lyrics can be interpreted as "I'm sinking and I need you to dive down and save me" or "I've already sunk, I need you to dive down here and be with me so at least I can suffer with someone I love." I'm guessing that, in this video, the ocean is receding, leaving a desert in it's place, and the guy is trying to get back to the bottom of the ocean were he feels he belongs, like how when you're feeling hopeless, all you want to do is stay in that state because, as bad as it is, you're just so familiar with it that it feels "right." Heavy stuff. EDIT: Just rewatched the video. I get it now: it's a suicide song. He's begging someone he loves to talk him out of killing himself. When he screams "OH GOD I WISH YOU WERE HERE!" while the words "I just can do this any longer" flash on the screen, he's saying "I don't want to go through with it, but I'm afraid I will if you don't stay here with me in my time of need" (since suicide isn't the desire for death, just the desperation to not live with depression any more). "I want to, want to, live," I think, speaks for itself. EDIT EDIT: Ok, I didn't know about this band having a sort of mythology about it, now understand that all of their songs are Vessel singing to Sleep. Still, I like that it's at least a little open to interpretation. EDIT EDIT EDIT: I've changed my mind, I don't think this is a suicide song any more. I think I was getting it too mixed up with the message in the music video, but the song itself is more of an "I love you, God" song. Y'know, "Oh Lord, help me in my darkest hour, lift me out of the darkness and show me the way," etc. But I also think it's an unrequited love song FOR God, or in this case Sleep. Listening to the rest of this band's output, I feel safe in saying that a). Vessel is more devoted to Sleep than Sleep is devoted to him, and b). the lore is mostly arbitrary and really just there for fun.

I know this is an old comment now, but I just wanted to say that all your interpretations are valid and most likely meant to be read that way. You've genuinely taught me about the whale fall and hydrothermal vents idea of this. Sleep Token are a fantastic band and their songs are often incredibly emotionally raw and speak of very dark times they've gone through. They so very often refer to scientific or biological functions as metephors within their lyrics (Alkaline anybody?). I love the lore of Sleep and all the songs being in worship of It, its what got me in to them in the first place, but I personally feel its a framing device for a gimmick of intriguing anonymity. The masks are a protection against the vulnerability these songs speak of. I guess my point is, there are layers within layers to the image, music and presentation of this band, and I honestly think that if a theory ever occurs to you for a song, chances are it was intended as a possible reading for it. This song is a beautiful insight to vessel beyond the mask. Whilst we all wish not to know who he is directly. This look into his battle against his own person is a unique take for Sleep Token. Its simply Vessel letting it out, no drums, no guitars, no piano, just him, vocalising what he feels. Despite not having any instrumentals, i perosnally see this as their heaviest song, thst i for one reasonate with. Its that sinking vulnerability that a lot of people feel, its dark and almost disturbing. And Vessel, unmasked, reveals this vulnerability in such a poetic way. This is why i love this band so dearly. Worship.

I love that the sound changes and you never know what to expect with Sleep Token. People would complain if the album sounded exactly the same as the last one. Can’t please everyone. I am so blown away, it’s beautiful. This type of approach with the vocoder always hits me in the feels. The way so many different notes in the harmonies are just floating and settling. You can actually see them moving when you close your eyes.

Smh, Sleep Token you’ve done it again. Some of the fanbase needs to realize that sleep token isn’t all about those tasty chugga chuggas and BAOOOO BAOOOO’s. This band has always had an emphasis on these massive a lush electronic and choral elements. This so not out of character and anyone who has heard all of there discography shouldn’t be surprised. This is so damn good and the visuals just elevate it even higher.

The fanbase doesn't need to realize anything. Some people (including me) enjoy the heavy side of Sleep Token more than the electronic/vocoder side. Others might think the opposite, and that's totally fine. Gatekeeping which fans gets the band or the music the best is just pretty lame.

I think its city of ice not vines. It makes sense too because of the later line of turning the skies into glass. Ice is very reminiscent of glass. I could make a lot more allusions to ice and cold and cities that could fit the theme of the song more so than vines. But on the same note.. vines would be more realistic; post apocalyptic scene with nature retaking cities.. and buildings catching fire etc.
