So... I heard "Vore" and was impressed... By the vocals, the production, the writing... It was all great! But as soon as I posted my review of that song, I got lots of comments suggesting that I had started with the wrong song!
"The Summoning" was the song that came up most frequently as the place I SHOULD have started with Sleep Token.
Honestly, I was not prepared for how diverse and soulful this song would end up being. The ending jam/twist is just incredible and totally unexpected. It jerks you out of your comfortable listening posture and forces you to move like you're singing gospel! Just WOW!
The vocals on this song are even more impressive too. What diversity and range!!
Join me as I experience "The Summoning" for the first time and go into an analysis on what makes Vessel's voice so compelling and enjoyable!

You gotta listen to some of their softer songs to really get them tbh. Atlantic, Telomeres, Jaws, Aqua Regia just off the top of my head. They do a lot of different things, and its that sound diversity that makes them so easy to listen to on repeat. I never get bored of them because it isn't just heavy chugs for 20 mins on an album. The few heavy songs stand out because they hit like an explosion, and the softer songs just make you feel good and take you places

That slide on the word “divine” I always thought of the phrase “biting the apple” from my old vocal coach. The “I” is slowly stood up and then you almost feel like you bite into it with your mouth shape as you finish the word. Or how he bites into the word “side” Vessel’s articulation is so addicting to listen to.

This is kinda like Christmas morning. I think many of us who have listened to them for a while have had an informed, detailed breakdown of Vessel’s vocals on our wishlist and the wait was so worth it. Your analysis of Vore was fantastic, but The Summoning really shows off so much of what he can do and met it with outstanding info. I couldn’t sing my way out of a paper bag, but I love learning how things work and you pointed out so many techniques he flashed and choices he made here that my vocally-uneducated mind never would have picked up on. I’ve listened to this song 1,000 times before you posted this and from 1,001 on, I’ll have a brand new appreciation for what’s happening in it and how it all came together. I can’t thank you enough for that. It also gives me the best feeling to experience them vicariously through someone just discovering them, especially when they come away from it wanting more, so thanks for the hit of dopamine, too. What’s crazy is that there’s still so much more to his vocals than what Vore and The Summoning show off. If you’re looking for suggestions on where to go next and a one-take of just Vessel and a piano is of interest, check out Blood Sport (From the Room Below). To me, it’s a textbook example of the difference between just a performance and forging a connection with the listener through the communication of raw emotion using both words and tone. Anyway, thanks again for a phenomenal analysis. Can’t wait to see more.

A youtuber called Jun Sim made this statement when he was analizing vessel that made me understand vessel's vocal timbre with his warm, dark tone. His tongue is raised to varying degrees from phrases to phrases to reduce resonant space and darken the tone. Also, his voice is placed ever so slightly back so that in combination with the tongue placement, it creates that distinct overtone and tonal characteristic.

I would loooooove to see your analysis of Blood Sport (from the room below). It's a piano arrangement from the deluxe version of their first version, and it's music video is if Vessel singing at the piano so like, you can hear his raw vocals PLUS watch him actually perform. Regardless, I always love your videos so much and I'm so excited to see you getting into Sleep Token!! I was watching another person on KZbin who said Vessel is, and I quote, "an okay vocalist, nothing special, but pleasant" and I literally thought "I'm no expert but that sounds Objectively Incorrect... I need Chris Liepe to get onto this band and talk about how skilled Vessel is." You saying "this is a GREAT vocalist" at the end had me punching the air 😂 (tbc if Vessel's vocals aren't ur personal taste, I totally get that, it's just the statement of "Vessel is an okay vocalist" is just Wrong. someone can be both an amazing vocalist and not your personal taste. like I don't listen Josh Groban but I fully recognize he's a phenomenal vocalist and if I said he's "an okay vocalist" I would be completely incorrect)

My bf hates him and I think that's fair but he said he was bad and I was like..."wtf, no he's fucking amazing" and since all I do is just singalong for fun I have like no way to express how he's so amazing and how the sounds he hates are difficult to do and done *on purpose*. And then trying to explain how you felt exactly the same as he did about all but one or two songs until it just *clicked* one day and suddenly it was beautiful (bloodsport, from the room below, of course being thr puzzle piece), just makes it more confusing. It's so validating to hear an expert express why and specufically what makes him so magnificent.

Vessel's voice & control are out of this world and the drummer is unreal. Would love to see your reaction to Bloodsport from the Room Below (his rendition of Hallelujah from that same session is the BEST you will ever find), Jaws, Sugar, Atlantic, Aqua Regia, The Offering, Atlantic, High Water, and Hypnosis. Every song is so different and perfect in its own way.

Oh, you did review the Summoning 😂 please more ST, love the analysis. This song has a lot of gritting in it, especially the whispers. You can feel your jaw clench everytime he goes in. Love it

I love your reaction. Could not describe to other people why I think vessel can sing so incredibly well. You describe it so well and even better. I would be very interested in a reaction to Atlantic from the last album, but again great reaction, great channel. Instant subscription. greetings from germany

When Vessel first starts singing, it gives me a bit of a tool/Maynard vibe. His timbre/vocal quality is different but I feel like his use of breathing, as well as the way he attacks the notes is similar. Think of songs like H. or 7empest. Also, the palm muted guitars and odd time signatures gives the starts of the song a tool vibe in my opinion

This is just a unique song, both vocal wise and instrumental wise. On the one end, we have chugs and shouting, and towards the end, there is that jazzy, groovy soul section that is so seductive! The reaction and your focus on the vocal aspects of the song makes me so happy, as there are very less channels that react to this. As a past vocalist that had the platform to express himself, but couldn't bcz of the pressure of studies, and the pressure to become a Doctor from the family (that's why I had to leave the musical genius of me behind, but I am happy nonetheless, as I literally saved a person's life like 2 years ago), I love these reactions a lot. Wish I was the lead vocalist of a rock/metal band, as music has been my life, maybe in another life I will get that opportunity. Anyways, really appreciate the reactions, and just keep up the good work, man!

Awesome content and insight. Thank you for the knowledge. 🤟😁 I'm going to recommend your channel to my singer of my band. He was actually having a little trouble with a song of ours last night at practice because of the song we were playing takes more power for him to sing because of higher pitch compared to the rest of our songs. When he jokingly complained on how it takes a lot out of him to do that particular song compared to the rest, I instantly thought "I'm going to show him Chris Liepe's channel".. Again, thank you for the knowledge. 🤟 😁

Re: vocal sighs-- I first remember hearing someone describe those when Joe from Def Leppard said Mutt Lange wanted him to do what Simon Le Bon from Duran Duran did...the vocal sigh.
