Woop! Gotta love me some sleepers! Today we hop in a Subaru Outback which has a Cosworth built motor! Equipped with 434 wheel horsepower and 430 foot pounds of torque, this thing is hilariously awesome for a daily street car. The block originally was going to go in a hawk eye, but found it's way into the momma wagon! Thanks for watching and stay awesome! Social stuff, Tshirts, and more below!

This is my car and I thought I'd post a followup to some of the comments. Regarding the "$18 K" cost of the engine. I didn't pay that, I bought it from a guy who had bought it from Cosworth but never used it so I paid substantially less than that. Of course the build did get a little out of hand for all the supporting parts including the turbo. But once I had started I couldn't turn back. Regarding the EWG sound. It sounds much better in person, the loudness of the car doubles when the EWG opens up, so people know this car isn't messing around. About the power, reliability was my main goal not power. I take this car to the track and go WOT for like 30 minutes at a time. So obviously I don't want to be pushing the engine near it's limits. Also the tune is on pump gas. If I put on a bigger fuel pump, did an e85 tune, cranked up the boost and ran it up to like 8K RPM I'm sure this engine would make over 600HP. But there is no E85 around here, and my goal of reliability is already met. Regarding those who say I could get a different car and make the same power. True, but I wanted a "do everything car" and this is just how things evolved. I'm sure I'd be out a lot more money trying to sell my modded Outback with a blown engine (basically worthless), buy another car, and do all the mods necessary to get it the way I want it. The car now is exactly the way I want it and it's a bargain in my book as I'm sure I'd be out even more money getting a BMW, Audi, CTSV wagon (really only other wagon choices) and getting it to the same point.

Delmar Dale right on man, have you done anything to the car since the review ?
@oldskoolbiker
@oldskoolbiker 7 жыл бұрын
It's in the shop now getting a fresh rebuild. So I'll have new Dyno numbers soon. The header and uppipe were also cracked due to the tracking. So those have been replaced as well. The new header is Equal Lengh so it will have a different sound. Hopefully the EWG won't sound as bad as with un-equal length.

Kids... I look through the comments and see all the "all this money for only 430hp?! what a waste." First, have you ridden in a 430 hp car? It's ENOUGH power and thensome... And yeah, he put what you all think is way too much money into it, but it was well spent because unlike kids trying anything for their 900hp builds these days, he did his the right way. It's gonna drive right, not have an annoying CEL, and have a long happy life. You see all your friends at the meets who have their 850hp Evo, but half the time it's down? That's for a reason, because they took the cheap way out in modifying it.
@Chuzo1946

@colinmatlock2164
@colinmatlock2164 8 жыл бұрын
+Patrick Kerce (AntiArrhythmic) it also said he bought the motor from a guy that planned to put it in a rally car so you know he didn't pay $18k for it. you have to ask yourself why did that guy not put it in his rally car? probably because he needed money in a hurry so he sold it for a loss. happens all the time. blowing stuff up costs money too, buying motor after motor and hour after hour of dyno time isn't cheap either and adds up
@MrTshoff
@MrTshoff 8 жыл бұрын
Daniel Gebhart Theres ways to get this power the right way for much less money. Honestly unless you need the suv/minivan type cabin its not really all that practical either. Stock subarus get bad gas mileage i bet this thing is atrocious at the pump.

A lot of people don't seem to realize the 5 speed in the legacy GT and outback XT 05+ are stronger than the WRX's (strongest 5 speed that Subaru makes). Also the stock brakes are bigger. Both of these are common scavenge pieces for people that bought into the WRX finding out later the Legacy was a luxury STI. Even the block is the same as the STI in the GT and XT. the late 05 and all 06 LGT's have the better flowing D25 heads which are designed better (no common head gasket leaks) Also the LGT had bigger injectors than the STI's (560cc) the only downside was a slightly smaller turbo. Grab a VF52 and you have a STI killer for $8k less (after tuning)

Also was cheap got it for 5k with down pipe and uppipe and upgraded turbo and Cobb access Port. Basically best for the money.

2Irritated2Kill88 dude a normal wastegate doesn't sound like that. it's obviously the gate opening and closing improperly. the only thing that opens and closes the wastegate is the spring based on how much gas is flowing through it and how tight the spring is.

Here's the way I see it: New motor = new car. I know, I know, old chassis and all that. To me, the motor makes up most of what the car is. I don't care how awesome it looks or handle, if the motor is crap/unreliable, no dice. So basically a 'new' 434 whp car for less than $20K, not to mention the uniqueness & cool factor.... Or buy used and risk dealing with hidden problems. It's a bargain, in my book.

Its mostly because BP chassis Legacy wagon/Outback was last "normal" Subaru fully designed for performance and handling in mind instead of just safety like modern ones. They made lots of performance variants in Japan, australia and even europe(3.0R Spec B 6mt) like 2.0GT Spec B, 3.0R Spec B, B4 RSK(sedan) and S402 2.5GT special edition in Japan(you guys in america got 2.5GT both wagon and sedan before facelift, then 2.5GT Spec B and ofc Outback 2.5GT XT. Its so sad they lamified next gen Legacy so much...

Ral Its quick but for the money spent far from worth it to most enthusiasts. Im having a very hard time figuring out why anyone would need a minivan thats as fast as a mild mustang gt with worse gas mileage. I just dont understand this build.

+Sean Hallissey "under power"? When he goes wide open throttle and the turbo spools up to waste gate pressure..it dumps, hence what you're hearing.
@JacobFrey

blackonefifty ***** I don't get it either. If your waste gate dumps under pressure at wide open throttle, aren't you throwing away horsepower?

The block cost more then the car. Boy can folks go to the extreme with their car builds. That engine doesn't sound good from the driver's seat either. O well. If he saw it worth all that damn money then so be it. Not my money, not my problem.

That's absolutly awsome. What a unique car. That's why love subaru more than any other car. Either its an impreza, forester, legacy or outback here, you can just built it in many different way but it is still a Subaru. Great choice by the way for your Turbo. Used to have one on my 1999 type ra and it litteraly sounds like a jet plane.
