Anyone who’s taken the ferry from Algeciras or Tarifa to Tangiers will be familiar with the wonderful culture shock as they step from Europe into Africa. Suddenly, everything seems more vibrant, more colourful, more scented, bigger, and well, for a relatively sheltered European just so damn exotic! Morocco is quite possibly my favourite country I have had the luck to visit. It has everything: endless beaches, spectacular mountains, shimmering deserts, but most of all what I like about Morocco are the glorious cities. The sense of layers and layers of time and history and culture in every one of them (with the possible exception of Casablanca - although even in this sprawling, unwieldy metropolis, there is a fairly extensive and atmospheric medina), is glorious. For me, it has to be the pink city itself that takes the overall plaudits. Marrakesh is just so drop-dead gorgeous while being eminently alive. Touristy, but not too touristy. Fez runs it a close second though.

I agree with your comment. Europe and other countries heavily subsidize their passenger service. The high price charged on fuel is in part tax. This helps fund this efficient service. The USA is too engrossed in BS politics. Passenger rail has been neglected following WWII when people became enamored with their automobiles and air travel. The fuel lobby and other special interest groups are to blame.

I've travelled on the fabulous Indian Pacific...but that was only because I won a court case and could afford the price of a small house to do it. The Ghan is utterly exorbitant, that's the price of a large house!🤣🤣 And yes @Gary Kulpers it is just as corrupt in Australia, the freight companies own the train lines so you can imagine where the money lies. Everything, from Administration and bureaucracy, to the education system, to the pastries...etc everything is an adapted copy from France with a Moroccan touch. and the french are the biggest foreigners living in Morocco by a huge margin (legally, if we count the ones that re in Morocco illegally then that's another story ), and the French cultural network and institutions are more present and active in Morocco than any other country in the world..etc French influence is for the best or the worst very present in Morocco, despite Morocco actually trying to distance itself from France and get closer to the English speaking world, especially these recent years. wish is crazy, because France was present in Morocco for only like 40years and not even as a colony but a protectorate, countries that were colonies for much much longer don't have that much of french influence, mainly because for Morocco remained in very good terms with france after the end of the french presence, and it adapted many aspects of french society willingly in an attempt to modernize the county.

@@Yanzdorloph It sounds like a nice mix of cultures that Moroccans can select what aspects they desire and which to discard. It sounds like an interesting place to visit.I remember a song as a youth talking about the Marakesh express, a train..so is french spoken there or Moroccan ? or English?

@@gacj2010 most ppl speak Moroccan Darija(arabic with amazigh grammar and fewer vowels than standard arabic), french is spoken by most ppl who went to school (sadly around 25% of Moroccans didn't go to school, mainly old ppl ) spanish is spoken as a second language in the north and in the sahara, especially the further you get closer to the spanish colonies in Morocco (yes Spain still holds 2 big colonies in Morocco along with few rocks meters from morocco's beaches just to flex on Morocco and put pressure on it, and Morocco still demands them back to this day, the cities and the rocks lol, like I remember a war almost broke out with spain in the early 2000s over uninhabited rocks, were spain moved it army and all, but the sahara problems with the communist separatists take priority on the 2 colonies spain still clings to, for now at least ) English is spoken by the youth as a 3rd or 4th language but it's gaining more importance and you can easily find ppl who speak it in the big cities, then again if you get away from the big cities, you probably will find it harder to find ppl who speak English or even french in the remote villages (downside of being a very mountainous country is having remote villages cut from the rest of the country)
