So many people don't understand what the joy is of owning a sleeper. Its the joy of pissing off people in fast looking cars. Being able to be fast and not attract the attention of the police. Its about being able to put 3 of your friends in it with luggage and blast to Reno or Vegas. But the main part to me is hella cheap insurance vs some racy looking car.

I saw this video about 10 years back when I was 17...here we are 10 years later at age 27 and I just bought a 2004 impala SS, my first L67 3.8 sc car and I love it already, this video had a big part in getting this impala... always told myself one day when I find a good deal I'll buy an L67 equipped car...2500 bucks and 10 Years later here we are

The Impala SS is so sick. My good friend’s mom had the one with the big V8. I’m no car enthusiast so I’m not sure on the model and package. One time standing in front of my house I told him to light em up. The impala literally ripped the blacktop off part of the road. Years later it became a pot hole.😂

gotta' love all the dumb bros and jocks making the same ignorant comments. "my car's still faster" . "Buick doesn't get you laid" . "notice how he didn't race a Ferrari" great job totally missing the point. the Sleeper has nothing to do with any of that. he didn't say it was the fastest car on Earth. he routinely admitted how horrendously ugly it is. the point is that you can drive it all day long, all over town, and pull up to all kinds of other guys who think they're hot shit because they just bought a 'nice' sports car off the lot for 50 stacks and blow their doors with your cheap beater. it's just fun. it's just another subset of the car culture.

It's fine, they'll just end up getting upset at themselves when losing to a car that "looks slow" and it's funny when they do get mad. Most of those guys are also the guys that hate on imports and call them ricers but with that light body, a turbo just makes it fast as hell. Maybe you should make a video on Ricers etc because most people don't even know what a ricer is and call everything from Asia a ricer. There is a huge difference between a ricer and a rice rocket. I'm getting off topic of the whole sleeper deal but yeah good video.

***** Please don't misunderstand me. I'm not trying to say mustangs are slow. They are excellent at going fast in a straight line and of all the stock cars mustangs make the best noise hands down, but when they try to turn physics can be a bitch. My original argument was that mustangs are too heavy and not very good at Thomas' idea of "performing". Which when you think about it why is braking, cornering and doughnuts his three main factors of performance? Just for the record most mustangs are excellent at doughnuts. Lighter cars are better at acceleration and cornering. What is the most commonly suped up mustang? A fox body. The lightest mustang body style. As an example of why more weight slows you down, I was able to outrun a convertible late model mustang in a gutted 91 crx with a bone stock motor. Yes a convertible is heavier than normal and it was probably the slowest model the guy could buy. Even though it had a lot more HP than me that doesn't change the fact that a mustang got outrun by a bone stock crx. yes my car is a POS, no I don't think its fast, its still fun to drive, especially on curvy roads. Sorry if my posts get a little long, its hard to sum up my rebuttal in one or two sentences. Its all in good spirit.

A sleeper is really beneficial when you want to drive a fast vehicle and you live in a community where car theft is common. If a burglar was to walk up to a sleeper vehicle they will walk away because they will assume the car has a low value and there is nothing worth stealing. Some of the major problems with sleepers is the resell value of the vehicle. Yes, it is a modified vehicle but most people do not go to a dealership or website and search for a "supercharged Regal." What will happen is that the engine will be worth more than the value of the car. Vehicles like the 4 door Regal models are meant for the daily, steady working people; not for street racers. I give more respect to Sleepers than Ricers since Ricers only focus on modifying the aesthetic features of a car but it is probably best just to be happy with what you drive and stop trying to challenge other people on the road. Public roads are not race tracks. I get really annoyed when other people try to pull up next to my Mustang GT and they start revving their motors to challenge me. I always yell at them and say something along the lines, "Hey! I am trying to drive home after a long day at college! There are kids on these roads. Do you really want to get them in an accident?" To be honest, sometimes I feel those people are trying to compensate for something. Monetary or other personal features if you get what I am saying.
@dunkingkid710 жыл бұрын
Correct me if im wrong but cars that are unique are usually not stolen. Since if somebody steals a mustang cobra it would be more noticeable than a car like a buick regal since you dont see a cobra everyday but a common car like a buick would fly under the radar and not attract attention.
@raulmartinez348410 жыл бұрын
So what you are telling me is a car like a customized Ferrari Enzio has a less chance of being stolen than a Buick? Car thieves do not want to risk their lives and serve jail time to steal a cheap car because the costs will out weigh the benefits. What a thief will do is they will steal a car and either sell the car as whole or in parts to an overseas buyer.
@zedsquid400210 жыл бұрын
dunkingkid7 Dude, that doesnt make any sense. It doesnt matter what kind of mustang it is, if someone steals your car the cops will be looking for a mustang. Doesnt matter if its a v6 or cobra they all look about the same, and 90% of people can't tell the difference anyways. Hell, i would rather steal the most expensive mustang on the market, cause you're just gonna blend into the sea of other mustangs on the road. Steal a Ferrari, and you're not exactly blending into anything.. except maybe your jail cell trying to hide from 'bubba'. And how many buick regals do you see on the road compared to mustangs? You'll probably find a buick regal for every cobra, if that.

A sleeper is the exact opposite of a ricer
@dunkingkid710 жыл бұрын
Some of the most stolen cars are honda's and toyota's because they blend in better than a lambo. Like think about it if you steal a lambo more people are likely to see it unlike a camry which nobody would blink one eye at it. If your car is unique it is less likely to be stolen because it can be identified easier.

I'm going to look at an 03 Regal GS tomorrow. Older lady owned with 124K miles on the clock...I am very optimistic, but being cautious at the same time. Her asking price - $900 Could be a massive win... Will post a followup message on the outcome of my 3 hour trek to go see this thing.

In my opinion, this video would have been much better if you hadn't put such a negative spin on automotive enthusiasts. You don't need to offend people before you tell them you like sleepers.
@1987slim10 жыл бұрын
He makes a good point though. Car enthusiasts are a little different today than they once were. Car enthusiast back in the day loved their car and what they could do with it. They talked smack, but it was all in good fun and at the end of the day they all could rely on each other. Now it is just about loud obnoxious my car is better than yours and you can suck a big one type mentality. I am sure there are still good enthusiast groups out there, but there are so many others that muck it up now.
@thingsdemystified10 жыл бұрын
1987slim But cars back then were even louder and more obnoxious and emitted noxious fumes/odors. The difference now is that we have more imports that have a different number of cylinders, thus making a different type of sound. People are polarized on whether they like this different sound coming from these imports, whether they are BMW V8/V10s or 4/6 cylinder engines. There's also a relatively new camp/generation with a "green" mentality. This means more conflict. I think it is more diverse now, and that is an improvement.

I'm sorry but you can't call yourself a car enthusiasts, look by definition. A car enthusiasts loves all cars regardless of anything. Those guys love the way their cars look and sound and that is what's important to them, You making your car go fast is what's important to you.
@captaindiegoalatriste9459 жыл бұрын
Sorry, but I can't agree that a car enthusiast must love all cars regardless of anything. I am a car enthusiast, have built a few sleepers that were economical and a load of fun to drive, but I do not like Yugos, a whole bunch of Fiat's, early model Kia's and Hyundais (later years much better, I believe), etc, etc. That doesn't mean I'm not a car enthusiast. By your reasoning, the only guy who would be enthusiastic about women would be the one who likes all women, regardless. Sorry, does not compute.
@captainamerica809 жыл бұрын
CaptainDiegoAlatriste by saying your a "car" enthusiast you are by definition an enthusiast of all cars....it would have been better for him to just say he was a "sleeper" enthusiast because that's what he is. He obviously has a problem with people who can expense alot nicer car than what he can and you can here it in his condescending tone and negative aspect of others who love "loud" cars. From a professional standpoint he has an enormous lack of self confidence and shows a good amount of childish ego like the ones he races.
@captaindiegoalatriste9459 жыл бұрын
Joe Sylvester If one must be an enthusiast of all cars in order to be a car enthusiast, then there are literally hundreds of thousands of people who belong to car clubs for specific vehicles, e.g., Vettes, Crown Vics, whatever, who are not car enthusiasts, because their enthusiasm is primarily or exclusively for one brand or model of car. You appear to be splitting hairs in order to find a toehold for criticism of the video maker, whose attitude you clearly don't like. That is your right to your opinion, but taking a narrow definition of what a car enthusiast must be enthused about does not support your argument, it just reflects your opinion of the video maker. And just as people have a right to adopt a snobbish attitude because they can afford an expensive car, he has a right to adopt an attitude that he can get more out of a car with less investment, thus leaving him more money for other things of his choosing. When you analyze him as having an enormous lack of self confidence and that he shows a good amount of childish ego, you state that that you are saying that from a professional viewpoint. Out of curiosity, what profession are you qualified to practice, and how does that profession qualify you to judge his pride in his ability to wring more out of a car for less, in a manner contrary to majority opinions? And why wouldn't a person who either drives a car that most people can't afford, or who has an inflated idea about their car's performance, be just as guilty of such a lack of self confidence, such that they would also be exhibiting childish ego? Indeed, what evidence do you have that you yoursel are not guilty of the very same things, given that you object so strongly to what he has objectively accomplished, regardless of his attitude. He does take cheap affordable cars and does make them go a lot faster than a lot of more expensive cars. Where is the maturity in driving a more expensive car for appearances, that cannot perform the way someone tries to convince others it can. I am referring to people who put race tires, hood pins, 3" exhaust systems, performance parts decals, etc., all over their $60,000 car that turns 15's at the strip. What is your professional opinion of someone who rolls like that, if you qualify to give a professional opinion? Absent true verifiable professional qualifications for making such an evaluation, you appear as one who tries to lend false authority to what is no more or less than your opinion of this guy and his activities. And I'm sure that, unlike you, he loses zero sleep over what other people think of his "racing" program. His satisfaction is derived from the money he has saved matched against the numbers that flash on the board at the end of a run. Why do you care that he derives a childish satisfaction from kicking butt on people with expensive slow cars, if in fact it is childish satisfaction?
@captaindiegoalatriste9459 жыл бұрын
Joe Sylvester I am a car enthusiast. I do not love all cars regardless of anything. Therefore, I have just done what you said I cannot do, yet I did it. You may want to pass a new universal law that only people who love all cars regardless may call themselves car enthusiasts, but you have not done so and will not be able to do so. People who do not love all cars regardless, but who do like a lot of different cars, call themselves car enthusiasts as a shorthand, to indicate that they like at least one type of car, without qualifying which one it is, or they are indicating that they like several different types of cars, but not necessarily all cars. After all, it would be rather dysfunctional to have to specify that I am a "pre-1989 Ford Thunderbird/Ford Crown Vic (especially 92-97) enthusiast/Mercury Grand Marquis (especially 92-97)/early fifties Mercury and Ford/55 and 57 Chevy/Mk II and E Jag (especially 2+2)/58 Pontiac convertibles with a V8 and dual quad carbs/Mustangs from the sixties, the Boss 302, Fox bodies, ...." etc, etc... Nor do I want to have to specify the exceptions to the cars that I like. I am just a "car enthusiast" with likes and dislikes, some strong, some not so strong, but who does not like just one type of car, nor do I like all types of cars. Who are you to say that I can't call myself a car enthusiast? I am glad that there are people like you who have love for Yugos, Tatras, Skodas, and a whole host of other cars I find next to useless, but that doesn't make you more of a car enthusiast, or a better car enthusiast, or the only true car enthusiast. You can believe that if you want to, but you would be wrong, just like you could make left turns on red, but you'd be wrong. Obviously, this guy and his success with inexpensive fast cars has gotten under your skin, but trying to fault him for saying he is a car enthusiast comes off as just a petty attempt to discredit what he has accomplished. You may not like what he has accomplished, but it doesn't change the fact that he has accomplished it, and that he is a car enthusiast with preferences, one of them being to go fast without spending all his money doing so.

CaptainDiegoAlatriste well apparently someone has lost sleep and a tremendous loss of time for something so trivial. Maybe if they spent more time in a book than listening to others opinions they might know I little more. Guess he's not the only one with confidence issues. All statements made by me are facts and you can look them up on your own since you have so much free time to troll about. Oh and small amount of advice that backwards hats do not make your car go faster.....or make you look cool.

While I would never condone what we saw him doing on the street, I really mean that, I enjoyed the hell out of seeing it. A friend of mine had a serious sleeper when I was in my early 20s. It was a 1967 Chevrolet Nova that came from the factory with a 6-cylinder engine. He dropped a 350 V8 in it and did some other things to it but kept the car looking the same. It looked like hell, really. An old woman's car. That car could fish-tail going up a steep hill with 5 guys in it. After he changed the rear end he turned a 9.1 second quarter-mile on his first run at a "Run What you Brung" open house at a local drag strip. I'll never forget that car.

sleepers are awesome ! however besides the whole " trying to make your presence known " part, i like just having a car that i personally find attractive. To me besides those aspects of who wants to be louder and what not.. I like a decent exhaust note, personally i modify my car based on how i personally find it attractive. But i do think car enthusiasts that build sleepers should always be respected because they understand the true concept of performance over cosmetics.

LowAudio there's definitely nothing "iconic" about a iroc z Camaro. They were literally chopped to pieces because they were slow piles of shit. They are worth a bunch now because you can't find one that hasn't been changed totally. I love how you really try to hype up historical pieces of shit and complete junk in the age of dying muscle cars, then call them iconic. FFS a sleeper is great and all, but don't over hype the trash you raced
