Sleeping By a Glacier in the Alaskan Backcountry - Best Things to do in Skagway

A ferry, a train and a hike took me to a remote backcountry hut for a peaceful night sleeping by a glacier in the Alaskan Backcountry. Laughton Glacier is just One of Alaska's many glaciers, and this was one of the most unique experiences I have had in Alaska to date and one of the best things to do in Skagway.

Thanks for sharing. I flew on the Rust plane to Lake Clark, but when I got halfway there, we had to turn around and come back due to bad weather. They said we wouldn't be able to get back. I enjoyed seeing what I missed. Thanks again 😊

Laughton glacier has an ancient feeling to it. The rough forms and immense curvature and steps of the various arms of the glacier and all the wandering stone piles and massive carved ice piles stir up the artistic gateway in the mind. Stunning beauty! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Great Alice. Nice train ride with a drop off point. I could feel the area, the smell of nature, the moisture from the glacier, and it gets cool being in a remote cabin at night especially with the elevation gain. Who's your friend? 😇 It is always nice to have company, someone to chat with while out there in the woods. It is also safer. I have been camping at the foot of glaciers on several occasions here in Canada, slept in a remote cabin a couple of times as they were free to use, to keep the weather out. The morning freshness was fantastic and the sunrise reflections almost a spectacle to watch. Soon glaciers will be something from the past as they are melting away. Thanks for sharing 👣🐻🌲

I just visited Skagway for the first time a few weeks ago (drove there). Great town, but WAY too many people in town due to the ships. You did it right. The key is to get out of town. I don't get the appeal of visiting a town of a few hundred with 10k other tourists and buying a bunch of junk at tourist traps. I also visited Hyder, AK. WAY nicer. And the locals there were actually all year round residents.
