Just Hikes in Glacier National Park's Many Glacier area

A detailed tour of several of the most popular trails in my favorite area in my favorite National Park. And in the Iceberg Lake trail segment there's a BEAR encounter.

I loved Many Glacier. I spent a lot of my time there last year thanks to Going-to-the-Sun Road being partially closed until mid-July. Iceberg Lake was easily my favorite hike of the trip.

Great video. I like your Google map views. Our extended family hiked up both the Grinnell Glacier and Bullhead Lake trails two summers ago. Our grandkids arrived first at Grinnell Lake and were excited to see that their grandparents had managed to stumble to the lake and glacier. We hiked the Bullhead Lake trail the next day. To get to Bullhead Lake, I had to bribe our family with a dinner at Many Glacier Hotel to hike all of the way to the lake.

Thank you for this fantastic video!!!! I'm going to GNP with my 3 kiddos next week. I really really want to bring them to the Grinnell Glacier trail. If I take the boat, how far will it take to the glacier lake? Can the 4 years old little boy make it? Many thanks!!!!

Thanks- which Glacier Lake? Lower Grinnell Lake is a little over a mile from boat drop off point. It's in trees and flat. Maybe a 4 year old can do that. The trail up to Upper Grinnell Lake is 4 miles with over 1600 feet of elevation gain. Might be too much for a 4 year old.

I recently saw a photo of a of a view down over Iceberg Lake from the rock up above. Do you know what trail takes you to that location?

It’s more of a scramble to that spot. There is no official trail. There is a trail to a view above Grinnell Glacier.- i’ve done it. You can then scramble around that area. You’ll have to find a route off the highline that takes u above iceberg. Id try 743hikes.com - i think that’s the site - it might have the info you’re looking for. The park just added vehicle reservations to Many Glacier and Two Medicine, and I couldn't be happier. Last summer we finally got down there after Covid and ended up wasting an hour round-trip driving to Many Glacier, waiting in line at the gate, only to be turned away because it was full. A reservation would have informed us one way or another if it was worth going. Some day I'll eventually get to hike Grinnell Glacier XD

At the end I mention the new res ticket for those areas. Maybe i should move it up. But i never know if watch for info or for pretty pics. That would suck to drive there and not get in.

on the other hand we went in 2022 and it was nice to know that without a reservation we still had a chance to get into some of the satalite areas.

How do you defend from bears ? Bear spray only - or firearms too ? And what is your recourse if the trail is closed for bears: just turn around ?

Make Noise- for legal reasons I'm not going to offer advice- check the park website- there is a section on Bear Safety. trails tend to closed at the trailhead.

Can say I am now a bit concerned about bears. Won't take Sandals on any long hikes lol.

i recommend hiking shoes with a positive heel which can help stop a slide when going downhill. i had to google chaco shoes- i know chaco as a place i’ve been to. If it’s cold and wet - waterproof boots are helpful

I've been there 19 times from late May through Early Oct. Around labor day is my favorite time to go. If you havent seen my 2 hr "Glacier: The Hiker's national Park" on my channel you should (FFD through the segments already seen). Some park employees use it as orientation. it sound like you're working there this summer- if true and you have connections with the Lodging reservations please let me know.

I am going end of June with a friend and his son. His son has MS and could walk some but certainty not long hikes. My question is specifically about Many Glacier. What is the best way to take in all the beautiful views? Is it better to drive or hike? I will only be there like one day. Is it better to do the boat rides and hike the Grinnell Glacier or is it better to just drive around Many Glaciers and do no hikes? I figure driving I can cover more area, but to go in deep you need to hike. So I'm conflicted and only have one day.

hmm. i suggest you subscribe and watch my 30min ish Going to the sun road video - the one that includes the trails near the road. Also, my what u need to know video might be useful- especially the vehicle reservation situation which limits where you can go during certain times of day. also getting boat tour tickets may difficult on the day.

only if there are cancellations. The MG hotel may have packages. it’s sad but glacier requires lots of luck as well as planning.

You never mention, if you are staying at the Many Glacier Hotel can hike to Piegan Pass then back to the Many Glacier Hotel. I stayed there this past July planning on going back in 2024. I will only stay at the Many Glacier Hotel, Swiftcurrent Motor Inn and Cabins or St Mary Village.

@The West is Big! Travel on the maps about how far is the hike to Piegan Pass and back to the Many Glacier Hotel? I stayed 6 nights last July 23rd at the Many Glacier Hotel. The Grinnell Glacier hike was not fully opened because of 20 feet of snow blocking the trail by the waterfall section. That is just one reason why I am planning on going back in 2024. I also want to go back to Canada Banff, Yoho, Kootenay and Jasper National Park. The place I'm looking forward to the most in Canada is Lake O'Hara. That is the best place in all of Yoho national park.

I dont remember. Id have look at my Hikes video. I’m guessing 13-14 Rt with lots of elev gain. I did piegan from the sun road- btw- siyeh pass is better with a great view of Cracker lake
