The Bear situation here in Romania seems to be out of control. We have more than 6.000 bears in the Carpatian Mountains - the largest population of bears in Europe. There are more and more bear incidents and encounters reported in the media. And given that I experienced a few encounters myself in my adventures, camping in the woods seems unsafe and is no longer an option for me. At least not when I go by myself or in small groups. And since the bears won’t be going anywhere any time soon and I still want to enjoy camping, rock climbing and mountaineering, I have to be creative. A hard metal box seems like a safer place to spend the night in than in a tent. There are a few more reasons for sleeping in the car like money and flexibility.
And as much as I wish that I had a comfortable camper or at least a small van, I decided to give car camping a try and do the best I can with what I have. And what I have is this Mercedes_Benz A Class from 1998.
I’m Max from Lifehackermax and this is my test run on micro car camping just to see if it can be done and if it is comfortable enough to do it regularly. I’ve learned a thing or two during my experiment that I would like to share with you, so, sit back, relax and enjoy the ride.

Mamy w168 od 7lat. Od 5 jeździmy nim na wakacje i wypady weekendowe. 2 osoby dorosłe i dwa koty. Zbudowałem skrzynie i wozimy ją zamiast tylnych siedzeń. Do spania składa się przednie siedzenia, rozkłada się skrzynie materac na górę i ma się przestrzeń płaską o długości 2m. Spokojnie dwie osoby się wyśpią 😊

I camped in my a160 near a lake for an music festival and oh boi did i sleep like a baby i had other peoples stuff and backpacks in the car because they slept in an tent and were scared that someone will steal their belongings and i still had so much space and i used multiples blankets thin and thick ones as an bed and my sleeping bag i fliped them in half and it was more soft and cozy then my bed at home i really had fun times because i was the most energetic and got more then 8 hours of sleep every day. Its an small car on the outside but it has a lot of space in the inside really good car for camping i would recommend everyone getting it and it's really good for snowy areas because the anti sliding resistance(ASR ESP) is phenomenal

Max, thanks for providing the interior dimensions of it but do you happen to know if what you got here is the long wheelbase version (148 inches overall length) or the normal shorter version (142 inches in length)?

Max, is it possible for the passenger and driver seat to fold flat? If they can, you may able to just make a platform at the cargo space at the same height level of the folded rear and front seats then overlay a mattress all over it. But then again, do the front seats fold flat?

Does the airbag still work when you unplug the red cable ?

I can’t tell for sure. It depends on how the car computer was programmed. The cable gives information about the passenger: if there is someone on the chair and if it wears the seatbelt.

@@LifeHackerMax thanks for your reply. but there is no SRS light turning on or something? or the airbag light? kind of afraid of removing it because i read a lot of stuff about trouble with removing seats in a forum

@@yankho7642 maybe if the seat also has integrated airbags in them might cause problems. My seats didn’t have airbags. Anyway, I don’t want to mislead you into some problems as I am not a professional in the field. I would recommend asking a mechanic about the issue and maybe have him help you in removing the front seat the first time. Have you seen my second video where I built the bed frame? I did it so I don’t have to remove the passenger seat. That would be another way to go about it if you enjoy a little bit of crafting. And it is a lot more comfortable 😉.
