Great video. As a former truck driver, thank you for telling the viewers to please avoid parking in "truck spots". It's very hard for trucks to find parking places, and worse yet, since truckers have a set amount of time they are allowed to drive per day, often they don't have the available drive-time to go further down the road to find another spot. So here's a trucker tip for you: if you have to park next to trucks, try to avoid the refrigerated trucks (with the big cooling unit on the front of the trailer). Those cooling units are loud and run all night. Instead try to get next to a flat bed, car hauler, or tanker truck. They are usually the quietest. Be safe!

Could exhaust from an idling semi gets in to the camper and kill occupants while they sleep? I was told there were truckers killed in the cab by their own truck exhaust.
@TheBandit76133 жыл бұрын
@@nicolathonathan770 No. Diesel emits less hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and lead pollution than gas. It might smell a bit. Nothing to be concerned about.
@drscott6733 жыл бұрын
@@nicolathonathan770 It's highly unlikely. Think about how close together rigs are parked for the night. I've never heard of any problems. Besides most modern trucks aren't idling their engines all night like the old days (unless it's very cold). Most rigs have Generators and APU units for power and heat/AC while they're parked. Those are more efficient, but can still be a little noisy if you're parked next to one in a camper.

I have a brother and a nephew that are truck drivers, and often they will tell me stories about how they had to drive down the road because they couldn't find a parking spot. Then one time my nephew got in trouble with his boss, but, when he told what happened, he got off, his supervisor knew what has happened.
@TheBandit76133 жыл бұрын
@@kenblackburn5452 It's B.S. that laws were passed limiting how much truckers can drive, yet there are such few places for them to park without messing around. There should be trucker (only) paved level parking about every 30 mins along all the freeways. Even if it's just a parking lot. I'm not a trucker but every thing I own or eat was brought to me by a trucker. Time we start treating them better.

My husband & I, now retired, have done a lot of travel & some camping. On 2 occasions, if he (army trained) had not been armed( has permit) we would have been in serious trouble. We were unaware that 2 men had spotted us camping alone & followed us walking on a fire road in AZ until they tried to accost us. We never camped outside of a campground after that encounter.The second in Tennessee @ a rest stop I encountered a very bad man, but he fled when my husband returned. Also I was followed home from a store late @ night to my gated community. The van did a quick uturn when he saw guard. Please take a course, get a permit. Never tell anyone your route. Jeanne

If I want to drive to Canada, now I don't need to figure out what I'm gunna do with it. If I want to go to California, now I can't bring a mag with more than 6 rounds (or whatever number the commies think is appropriate this week). And I'm not that person that thinks the law doesn't apply to me because MERCA AND FREEDOM. Sure. If four dudes jumped me, I'd get my ass whooped, or worse, but believe me, they're gunna think twice about next time. Because I'm creative and devious, and I can do a lot of damage with a screwdriver and a can of bear spray. And if I'm somewhwre shady, I definitely have both. Even in California and Canada. Of course if I planned on never leaving Alabama, I'd probably sleep with a Thompson under my pillows and end all me sentences with the word see.

When walking, please carry a protective spray and a small high pitched alarm or whistle. I noticed you look and check to your left and right when out walking Jasper which is great, but don't forget to check behind as well. Another safety feature I've seen on campers is to have a strip of a few bright lights installed on all 4 sides of the camper that you can turn on for any situation that's needed. It's a great deterrent, and really nice to use when just camping. Enjoy your videos🌟🐾🚌

I traveled from Arizona towards Oregon towing a boat. I decided to travel the “road less traveled” and broke down in “middle of nowhere” Nevada. I ended up getting both the vehicle and boat towed over two hours and spending 10 days in a small town Chevrolet dealership that I believe would not have happened had I been in a larger town/dealership. Lesson for me was stick to the main highways unless absolutely necessary, and have the best towing coverage for both your vehicle and towed trailer or boat (trailers/boats are considered a second vehicle and are not always covered under under a standard tow). Overall, a huge expense of time and money that could’ve been avoided. Thanks for the great videos!

I just found your channel today and subscribed within the first 5 minutes of watching this video. Some very good tips here for everyone. I’m impressed with your awareness of your surroundings, so many people today don’t pay attention to what is going on around them and end up in a situation they don’t want to be in. The story about the rest area incident is a perfect example; you parked in a location that allowed you to see possible danger coming and had a plan to react to it. Sure it may have been nothing but you had a plan and you didn’t panic. A dog like Jasper is a good deterrent, most people with bad intentions are looking for an easy mark and you made it clear you are not. Looking forward to following you and Jasper in more adventures.

Mine is a Class C Motorhome towing my Jeep. My routine is to pull into the Wal-Mart and park in an easy spot and "take my dog for a walk". My motivation is to pick the better spot to park for the night and move to it after 1800h. I look for the cargo delivery area so I can stay away from it. Heavy trucks may make deliveries all night long and I don't want them to have to maneuver around me. The end of the store with the Auto Center is usually the best because the center closes earlier than the store. I routinely run my generator and have yet to be called on it. I suppose that unwritten rule was made in the era when generators sounded like lawn mowers. Be sure to pick up after your dog and don't allow them to bark when you are away (that was the only complaint ever lodged against me after dozens of such stays). Small amounts of trash can be left in the remote lot containers. AND another unspoken rule is to shop at the store where you are parking, kind of like Harvest Hosts. 🚒🚙

@@TailsofWanderlust Cass, as the primary driver I loved our 2003 Roadtrek Class B but it was getting older and at 6’2” the sideways bed was a little too short. Also made us very nervous about having only one vehicle. Right now we have an aluminum tent trailer and a camper setup in our Sienna. It gives us lots of options. We can use either alone or together. Our medium term plan is to get a Basecamp. We had 2 conventional Airstreams. I found them too fragile for me. I actually damaged the aluminum on both of them. The Basecamp is more along the lines of what we need.

I have seen solo female travelers at Walmarts, rest stops, etc. I keep an eye out in the event there is some weird stuff going on (I am a retired Cop). Once or twice I have asked (from a distance) if they needed help.

I was a truck driver, long distance type, for several years and I appreciate your telling others not to take up truck parking spots at truck stops. This happened on a couple of occasions where I had to leave a truck stop to locate another truck stop or anywhere I was able to find. At an Atlanta truck stop there were over 5000 parking spots and RVers had taken up many of the parking spots and I had to drive almost a 100 miles south of Atlanta to find a parking space. Fortunately, my delivery destination was only 10 to 15 miles from there. In a few short months I will be traveling and living in my GMC Savana cargo van which I've converted into a camper and I will certainly respect the rights of truck drivers as I know they are on a time limit regarding the number of hours allowed to be behind the wheel. Thank you for sharing your great video and advice.

That's a great description of WalMart research and parking. I did it once and fount it pretty noisy with cars zooming by my bed all night. Safe? Location is everything. Good in the middle of Kansas, not so good in Detroit or East St. Louis.

I camped out at Walmart for 20hrs and during the day there was a mobile spay neuter bus, hour later a windshield chip repair tent, but at night, the good retailers started showing. Around 8 a mobile bike shop anchored for 10 mins, selling and receiving bikes. Then at 11, a mobile drug store in an old beat up RV parked near my trailer. It was a great experience. I was able to get Mittens Neutered, fix my windshield, have my bike disappear, only to purchase one almost exactly like my old one but with a cheaper seat, and buy some great pharmaceuticals right there within 100ft of my camper. I love Walmarts!

Cracker Barrel, Flying J, Bass Pro Shop, and some rest areas, are a few others. However check first, or call ahead. Lots of WM are starting to close down Rv parking. In NM, they started to put overhead bars, lowered below Rv heights, so you can't enter their parking lots.
@TailsofWanderlust4 жыл бұрын
That's really interesting that they have started doing that in NM. Good to know, thanks for sharing Carol!

How do you get fresh water boondocking. I’m new to campers and I’d like some pointers on how to do off grid camping. I have a 12v fridge and solar panel so power isn’t that big a deal to me. Available water is my main concern.

@@bobbyw4pd We carry a 5 gallon jug with us for two people it usually lasts about three days 4 if stretching it… we take the jug to supermarkets and they have a filling station sometimes will use a gas station or find a building with an outside tap we be even used Canadian tire outside tap…. We rebuilt our 4 x 8 to 5 x 11-5 So we’re installing a 20 gallon under the seat but will still carry the 5 gallon jug so we can bring water to it if we have to and fill it up from the outside using the jug….. finding water can be a little tricky sometimes one of our little tricks is to go to a car wash they always got tabs….. just got to get a little creative……

I agree with everything you said, except hope that people will purchase things in the Walmarts where they stay - even if you regularly shop at a Walmart at home.
