One of the cool things about the Dutch Republic was that very ordinary people or from humble beginnings could get into science, arts and innovation. The tug boats also functioned as public transport in the wetter parts and an English visitor wrote about the lack of class distinction on it, with disgust of course. Many cycle paths in the country side started their life as a path for the tug boat horse.

My grandfather pulled a tugboat by himself or sometimes with a horse when he could afford it in the 1930’s. Those paths were called ‘jaagpad’ and when those paths became roads, they sometimes kept that name.

The reason for Onderdendam to exist was that a lot of canals that drained the polders came together here with locks and sluices, and the waterboards united here. The mansions there belonged to the rulers of the waterboard, the most important provincial organisation.

"That is a legit meteorite from Namibia" ... No sir, that is a meteorite from Space.... On a more serious note, it is not uncommon for meteorites to be shiny. It all depends on their composition of course but if for example it contains a lot of silica (the main buildingblock of sand) the very very hot entry into Earth's atmosphere might melt the outside of a meteorite reforming it into a glasslike substance once cooled down. I am sure besides Silica there are other compounds with a similar result. The "bedroom" in the bedroom is called a "Bedstee" (pronounced "bed stay") 8:55 Nate" We found a place in the shade, I don't need to get baked" ... The Sun: "And I took that personally"

You are correct, frisians can actually understand scandinavian languages pretty easily.
@DenUitvreter
@DenUitvreter 2 ай бұрын
They migrated from the North long before the viking era and they fell victim to the Vikings plunder when Frisia stretched to the South af far as today's Belgium. They have quite a reputation for being stubborn and defending their freedom, with foreign rule mostly being tolerated when benevolent and not very controlling.

@@buddy1155 As a Frisian myself who has lived in Scandinavia before, I do think Scandinavian languages are not the most difficult ones to learn, but without learning it, it's not easy to understand them. The written part is easier, but understanding Swedish, Norwegian or Danish is much harder. I studied Swedish for several years.

I'll one up you: Frisians/Saxons were the og Wikings (yes W instead of V). And the "Dani" oc (Dane, Dene, Denen, Den etc. generic for: lowlander), who when the Romans left the chat, still lived next to them in the area that's now coastal Flanders/Zeeland. Today's Friesland in the NL were the Frisians resettled later on, was still largely submerged back then. When the Frisians and other non-Christianized coastal Germanic ppl had to flee the Christianized Franks (also German, nothing "French"), they became "wijkelingen", as in the Dutch "(uit)wijken" i.e. to flee & resettle. Oldest form is the 7th C. "wícingsceada". They settled partly across the Channel where they founded cities with names ending in -wic (wijk, as in "Wijk bij Duurstede", but also "wickestede" from Beowulf). When later stage Vikings (9th C.) claimed those cities, -wic became -vik (Eoferwic/Jorvik).
