Scheveningen used to be THE place to get my fresh fish cravings but, as I was informed, that stall isn't there anymore. /boohoo!! I always started with 4 Haringen with onions, then a deep-fried flounder followed by deep-fried mussels and a coke or two. Yum!!!

Dear Nate and Katrina, Have you ever been to Panorama Mesdag? It's the biggest painting in The Netherlands: 14,6 meters high and 114,5 meters wide. It shows you the Scheveningen beach at the end of 19th century. You'll be surprised by the visual effect. Absolutely worth visiting!
It is extremely impressive. And we REALLY couldn't pronounce Scheveningen in that vlog. ;)

When you can pronounce Scheveningen as a foreigner than you are ingeburgerd ! :-) At the end of the video you had the right pronunciation of Scheveningen. The CH in Scheveningen is pronounced as a hard G. My father was at the Kurhaus when The Rolling Stones played there in 1964. All chaos broke lose after a couple of songs by The Rolling Stones. People started throwing chairs, glass and started fighting. There is a video of it on KZbin called "Rolling Stones breken het Kurhaus af". What you might not know is that Scheveningen is famous for their big fish auction and fish shops. I believe they have 6 or 7 fish shops / restaurants who all have the name Simonis in the title. My uncle used to sell fish in Scheveningen from a foodtruck as well.

You could have made a second part. there's the promonade which is a childhood thing. and further up there are statues that are interesting. and Sea Life. and luckily you didn't go to simones for fish, that's food poisoning central. Sadly it was always a tourist trap but now it has become way to expensive for normal people over there.

@DeesWigm2 ай бұрын
Scheveningen is no longer as popular as it used to be. It was so busy that a policy was introduced to reduce tourists. This has had the effect that many people now choose another seaside resort. In addition, there was a group of troublemakers who bothered people on the boulevard. Now they are trying to get the tourists back.

My favourite beach when I was a teen (in the 80s), cuz back then it was a topless beach. Now nobody goes topless thanks to cell phones. Stupid cell phones. A few years ago, the big casino was for sale for only a few million Euros. I suggested it to my wealthy Dutch cousins. They were not amused.

@valentinobanani25342 ай бұрын
@@spoonwinnipeg2021 HI Spoonw2021, G in Dutch can be substituted for something close to that extreme version of G for beginners, then while building vocabulary and grammar it allows time to practice the G to get it down more precisely plus a few other letters combinations like sch, for instance and vowel sounds like uu, aa, ei, ij, ou, au etc. that require a particular intonation and pronunciation as you're reaching a more advanced level.

A good method of pronouncing "Scheveningen" better is to let the initial "S" follow by the "G" sound like Nate pronounced "Den Haag"... Or just follow a course singing harsh vocals like in Metal, cause you'll use the same fleshy structures (not vocal chords) in the throat, creating the proper "G" sound in "Scheveningen".

It's not bad to have a "foreign" accent - it communicates that you are not Dutch and may not understand or appreciate everything that might go on. The royal family had a member who never got rid of his German accent and it became his hallmark. Yes, "we" made fun of that collectively but it was also charming in a way. If you want to however get rid of Dutch mispronunciation, learn the Dutch phonetic spelling and reading concept that English once had too. Once you flawlessly know these rules, read Shakespeare's original texts and note how it rhymes and rhythms. So the Dutch g/ch get pronounced as if you are clearing your throat. In the case of "Scheveningen" the difficulty for some foreigners is their inclination to pronounce the Sch as sjg, rather than sg. That was a dead give away for Nazi undercover folk that dead giveaway got terminated by the resistance. The second difficulty in Scheveningen is the ingen part where you need fluency. Your inclination is to pronounce this as ing-gen but it should compare to clinging rather than cling-gone. The Dutch name for the profession of "speech tutor" is "logopedist" - I suggest you find one that you book for a few hours, half an hour at a time, and ask them to teach you to properly pronounce Dutch sounds ("prosody"). Some of these have taught congenitally deaf people how to speak and would be extremely good at teaching you how to make a sound that you never heard when you grew up. Note that we start to learn the melody of our language already in the womb - provided mother spent her pregnancy in an environment with enough talking. This explains why French babies make crying spurts going up in tone towards the end of the spurt (sentence), while Germanic language babies go down in tone to the en of their spurts. In Germanic languages we go up in tone to the end of a sentence in questions. It seems to me that languages over time acquired by non-native speakers may do this too - making a statement in an asking tone because you are insecure about being understood: English in Australia, or bastardised soldiers-Vulgar-Latin acquired by Germanic tribes called Franks that named the funny result French and the country France.
