This woman is Aleta Jacobs, a pioneering Dutch physician and feminist who made history as the first woman to earn a medical degree in the Netherlands. Her groundbreaking work in women's rights and medical education laid the foundation for future generations of women in both fields. 14:56

@@nateandkatrinadotheworld She was actually the first woman to be allowed to do HBS which was a type of higher education. In the time that she applied for university, women were actually not allowed to do the entry exam, but the Netherlands had a liberal prime minister at the time: Thorbecke. Aletta sent him a letter in secret. The letter can still be seen in an archive as well as Thorbecke's letter to her dad in which he asked him for his permission (as Aletta was still underaged). Studying was tough. She was mocked, even in national newspapers and magazines, and her brothers were bullied so much, one of them even declared her dead. She never gave up and became the first woman to get a university degree, to earn a PhD and to become a doctor. Her sisters became the first female pharmacist and mathematician in the Netherlands. Becoming a doctor had been her goal ever since she was just 6 years old. Her dad was a doctor and he invited her to his appointments with patients and together they discussed illnesses and other cases. During a time when she lost all hope that she would ever become a doctor, her brother Julius - also a doctor - had hour long conversations with her to convince her she would become a doctor too. After she moved to Amsterdam in 1878 (after having further specialized in London), she opened her own clinic. Twice every week, for 14 years, she offered free consults to poor women. She studied and promoted contraceptives and opened the world's first birth control clinic in 1882. She further dedicated her life to improving women's working conditions, to women's voting rights and to peace. When she passed away in 1929, her funeral was attended by loads of people and part was recorded for the 'cinema news'. These videos are also archived and can be seen online.

I was born and i grew up in Groningen. De building where te Albert Heijn is in, was a stock exchange building. There where traiding grain. It was first build in 1774 and was build of wood. In 1862 it was rebuild as it is now. When the trading stopped is had several different things in it like a gymnasium. In 2000 it became a Albert heijn

Oh, just typed my comment and realised when I read this that yes, I have been to that building too! But I think it used to trade more then just grain, might be my mind playing tricks. Like I grew up on the Korreweg and the church there became the place where I took gymnasitcs once a week and my mom used to play volleyball there.

Actually never been to Groningen but always liked the slogan the tourism board came up with to promote the city because its like a cute play on words : "Er gaat niets boven Groningen" which translates as " There is nothing above Groningen". It of course means that its the best city but there is also literally nothing above it on a map because its the northern most big city in the country.

Nice to see you up here in the north! Was this filmed in August? It looks very quiet for Groningen standards. During summer, most students are gone and many other people are on holiday, so the city has a more relaxed vibe. As soon as the students and vacay people are back, it's a very crowded city. Sooooo many cyclists everywhere. As the video shows, Groningen is a bit of a raw city, a bit messy here and there. It has its charm.

I went to visit Groningen (city and province) almost a year ago, it was actually province number 12 out of 12, it was so cold and rainy, and I started to be sick, I learned later that I had my first Covid, but still, I enjoyed my weekend there so much, this city has a vibe, I went on top of the Forum at the end of the day and was disappointed to have missed the view on daylight, but I was gifted with such an amazing and beautiful sunset that I was glad I didn’t go there earlier. I think sometimes things are meant to be. It’s definitely a city I want to go back to, but in spring to see if the vibe hits different 😊 On my way home, the next day, I went up north to go to the Noordkaap, such a strange feeling when you leave the civilization, and there is nothing but warehouses and windmills (the white ones not the older ones) as you reach the extreme north of the country. P.S. I really wonder who you censored with that clown face🤔😂👌🏼

I think you mean by warehouses area De Eemshaven. That is an industrial area including a power plant. Kind of In the midst of it there is a port (accesible by train). You can take a boat from there to for instance Borkum, a nice German island (when arriving there you catch like a sort of train (included in the ferry ticket) and ride to the central village, and you step out in the middle of the village. And this coastal village is very easy to explore by foot. Or, if you like, you can rent a bike and explore the rest of the island.

Martini tower is named after Saint Martin. I think maybe the little geese you saw at 4.33 might be a reference to him as well. I live not too far from the city of Groningen, but in the province. The Korenbeurs was not always an Albert Heyn.. lol. As the name says "Grains-exchange", this was the place in the northern part of the Netherlands where grains were traded. Farmers and collectors came here with there samples of their grains to find buyers and then make a deal. This marketplace was a very important tradingplace in the Netherlands. Was born and lived in Groningen till I was 9. Still came there to shop for years on end. It changed a bit though. I remember walking down the Herestraat, the main shopping street and running into a man in a wheelchair feeding the pidgeons. He gave out the food to kids and even asked people to please help him clean his pee bottle (don't know the real term but it was not messy and he asked the adults!). He always got help and put a smile on the kids! So much has changed since then, from the Martinitoren and the square in front where the market is, you can see a house that is occupied by students, Vindicat or whatever. The students there caused lots of problems and the shopping is not what it used to be. That is not fully on the students though. I am glad you loved it but I wish you could have been there years ago! The eierballen would have been there too!

Thanks for making this video of the city where I live for a while. Groningen is a great and welcoming city that never sleeps. Lots of live music and open sessions. Different from most other cities in the Netherlands you don't have mandatory closing times for bars and clubs so if you have the energy and the budget you can enjoy the type of bar of your choice until dawn and visit bars 24/7. Next time take a walk at Noorderplantsoen, a very nice, vibrant and old park. My 800 year old birth town Zierikzee in the South West of the Netherlands combined with a visit to the Stormvloedkering and the beaches would make a very nice and interesting trip for you. Finally Americans in our lovely city. As said here, there is more than the west of Netherlands (nothing against it though, it also has enough charm). Now.pleazs come visit the rest of our province, there are vast places like het Wad (Waddenzee). Visit areas like Het Hogeland (used to be a county and region, but it is now only a region). Please blog about it.

Hey, I loved watching your video! Great job. I don't know where you guys have been so far but I could recommend visiting the other side of The Netherlands. The province Zeeland (Sealand) has a lot to offer. The most beautiful landscapes, very old towns, The 'Stormvloedkering' (Storm surge barrier), The Zeelandbrug (longest bridge of the country, Beaches with dunes and many delicacies from the sea. I live there myself and I would love to see how Americans react to this region of The Netherlands as most vloggers only visit the cities.

You forgot to show a few other interesting buildings, purely by architecture. First would be the DUO Building, which often is referred to as the 'cruise ship' when viewed from the ring road around the city. Then there is the HQ of the "GasUnie" which has an organic structure inside. The outside of the building is pretty nice to look at since the whole outside is made of masonry and the building is 89 meters tall. It's not only high but it's also pretty big. And of course there is the Euroborg Complex that houses multiple functions, but the main function it has is being the stadium for the local Soccer Club playing in the prime league, FC Groningen. You were already on the square at the Martini Toren, which is called de Groote Markt, and pretty often this big square is buzzling with local (black) markets where you can buy all kinds of stuff. And we can an Ikea. Now that might not sound interesting, BUT, this Ikea is the 2nd largest in all of Europe. Not bad for a relative small city in the North of the Netherlands with about 200,000 population.

Groningen really is the city that never sleeps so nobody is outside on Sunday cause they just got home. 😁 And the "Korenbeurs", the building where the Albert Heijn is located, means exactly what the (Dutch) name says, it was a place where grain was traded. The English translation of the name would be something like the "Corn-exchange" altough corn is something else. But that's why the light inside is pretty good, they needed to grade the grain.

The tower was called, I guess, after a sainted bishop called Martin of Tours or Martin the Merciful and his Latinised name would be Martinus Turonensis (316 or 336 to 397). In Latin, the Martinus form is called "nominative" and this is the form when the noun is used as subject to a verb. When it is used to indicate possession, as in Katrina's egg-ball, then the Latin word needs to be in "genitive" form and for words ending in "us" this gets replaced by "i". So Martinitoren means (St.) "Martin's tower".
@DenUitvreter
@DenUitvreter Ай бұрын
Groningen was an important pilgrimage destination before the reformation. It had John the Baptist's arm as a relic. Parts of the tower had to be rebuild three times, twice for fire after a lightning strike and and third fire because of the fireworks celebrating the successfull rebuild.

Seemed to me that Katrina tried to pronounce Martinitoren in the prosody of the Groningen's dialect. And I thought it was well done, but I originate and live far (on the Dutch scale) from Groningen in an extreme ABN [1] region. [1] A joking reference to standard Dutch that in English would abbreviate like GCD - General Civilised Dutch.
