It's just easier to bring cup instant noodle because all Chinese trains offer hot water, but you can actually prepare and bring whatever you want to eat, as long as it doesn't go bad too quickly in room temperature and to be polite, doesn't stink too much. Personally, I like to bring some pot-stewed fowl that can be served cold and fruits.

I’m pretty sure at the end of the carriage there is a dining room, at least on the train I went on. There was one cool auntie there who gave Hong baos to small kids. Only 1RMB in each packet but the gesture was still super unique.

Amy, hope one day you could visit the whole of Lake Tai (太湖) regions. It is the cradle of Wu culture (江浙文化). There are many historical places or towns (most of them are more than 2000 years old) to visit, very touristy, and have great food as well. For example 同里(The Venice of China), 乌镇,南浔古镇, 木渎(Cornucopia of Wu Culture) etc. In addition, Wuxi is the closest city to Lake Tai, as well as famous tourist attractions nearby Lake Tai as well... You will be impressed if you visit that region. 唔是无锡宁,欢迎外国旁油来无锡白相白相。

Remind me all the college days when I had to travel back and from hometown to school in those night trains. Sleeping seats are harder to get, sometimes i can only get sitting seats. With all those knowledge, when my girlfriend and I travelled in Europe, we book a night train and expecting the similar system, however... at Salzburge train staion 11pm, we boarded a train to Venice. But that was a room with 6 half naked young guys with a big box of beers..... they were apparently drunk. Luckily a gentlemen with uniform came by and asked if my girlfriend wanted to move to all-girl-only coach, leaving me with those drunk guys. But it turned out to be a great experience. they were a group of soccer fans working in a factory or so ( they spoke little English and I understood 0 German) but I drank beer the whole night!!

Amy, some years ago I was working in Shenyang. There was about 6 feet of snow on the ground which consisted of black and white layers, the black being coal dust which was always in the air. Although they were not allowed to buy anything, the locals would crowd into the Friendship store to keep warm. My wife and I were supposed to fly to Hong Kong but the airport was closed due to the weather so we took a train to Beijing. The airport at Beijing was also closed so we got a train to Goungzho (sp?)> I knew it as Canton. From there we took a hover craft down the Pearl river to Hong Kong. It was an interesting 2 day trip.

Approx 10 years ago I travelled by night train from Luoyang to Pingyao and from Pingyao to Datong. I wonder of these night trains still exist between these places It was also 6 beds per cabin. I am 1,83 meters and I did fit. It was not uncomfortable but I did worry about my stuff being stolen. Luckily that didn't happen and I was probably overworried. I like travelling in China but what I don't like is getting a visa. You need to say upfront which places you want to visit and in which hotels you will stay as far as I know. Maybe the rules have changed? Once covid is over I will travel again but I am not sure if China will be my destination, I like many countries.

Overnight sleeper trains are ok. Longer journeys are almost a nightmare. My first experience of a hard sleeper was Beijing to Datong in winter. Snowing outside. But the trains were uncomfortably hot and I spent the whole night in a lather of sweat 😓 Tbh, I've been on 24hr trips from Shenzhen to Henan Zhengzhou and they are also sometimes uncomfortable. Don't buy the food in the train station as it's incredibly marked up. You can purchase cheap at the corner mart or supermarkets. I enjoyed bringing fresh fruits on the journey. Soft sleepers are worth the upgrade. 1st class cabins are ok but even they are shared unless you buy out all 4 tickets. My worst experience was a sleeper bus that got stuck in the snow for 12 hours in Hunan whilst travelling from Shenzhen to Henan. Took 36 hrs for a 24hr ride... Word of warning for CNY. Tickets sell out weeks in advance and the trains are so overcrowded that people will sit in the aisles on their luggage and train stations will be packed with what seems like thousands of passengers. Many train stations use baggage scanners as well.
@ruedelta5 жыл бұрын
There's also the business class cabins which are only two beds and a private bathroom (western toilet). You also get a (musty) single seat sofa. The beds are pretty much the same as the soft sleepers. I would say it's a luxury that's only worth it if you're traveling with one other person and really want some good sleep, or just want to splurge on a different experience.

Over here in England we have spam, ham, tins of sardines and other package meat which was also used in world war as ration food. I think we should try our best and adapt to eat meat package for survival and conveniences for our advantages. Chicken feet is packed with cartilage that helps your joints. A man stranded in the ocean had adapted eating exotic parts of the fish such as liver packed with iron and eyeball omega 3 and other fatty parts of the fish for triglycerides and protein Human body are very hood with survival, when the are thirsty they will find water and make it clean. Modern society had prevented us from eating exotic things which we shouldn’t have abandon these lost survival and adaptation. During the world war those who survives are the one who fed well because you can’t fight well without food, and it breaks morale. Those poor Chinese people, for those who fought in ww1 and ww2,the 96000 chinese labour corps who fought against the Nazi, for the British, American and France for their freedom and other parts of Europe, they were treated unfairly.

Most people from cities in China prefer to travel by bullet trains or by flights as these options are very affordable for someone who earns a average salary in most cities. So do expect to travel with people from rural areas or migrant workers on these normal trains. Nothing wrong with these lovely people, but you'll have to put up with the chaotic, sometimes not so western-standard civilized manners. But I guess it's a part of the experience. If you prefer so stay within the comfort zone, definitely avoid these trains.
