Sleepy Hollow is an actual town near Tarrytown NY. You can visit the cemetary where Washington Irving is buried. The Old Dutch Church still stands and holds services.

Christopher Lee was first famous for the masses for playing Dracula in the 60s, and I feel as the Judge in the beginning of the movie his framing makes his chair look like two black wings. I am sure that's on purpose, as a homage / easter egg.

Disney did a great take on this story. It's paired with their "Wind in the Willows" in the film "The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad". The Headless Horseman half is a Halloween/Fall must watch.

You need to see the NZ comedy horror "Black Sheep". The tagline was "The violence of the lambs". If it makes you feel better to know this the iron maiden was actually a product of 18th century historical fiction.

What a wonderful reaction! Spooky time is always the best time, especially when it comes to Sleepy Hollow. It's one of those movies that doesn't overstay its welcome and think Tim Burton expanding the story of Sleepy Hollow was a great move. Great cast and I love how you pick up on so many things now, like picking up on writers tricks. You're one of the only reactors I will never tire of, I can't wait until your next reaction!

In the original Disney cartoon, Crane is killed when the Horsemen throws his own flaming pumpkin head at Ichobod, who is "never seen again." I think it's one of the only Disney Classics where the villain wins in the end.
@TheCkent10012 күн бұрын
Actually, it ends with Ichabod's whereabouts unknown. Disney leaves it with the rumor that he is living with a woman in another town. It is a Disney movie and targeted for and audience of children, so they are not going to come out and say that Ichabod died when, even in the original story, Ichabod's disappearance is left to interpretation.
@nickthedreamer44346 күн бұрын
On top of what Ckent said, it should also be noted that Disney's Icabod is not really the hero. Brom Bones is. Icabod's literally there for selfish intent of marrying to be rich and gets what he wants by being the Bugs Bunny in a Daffy Duck cartoon. Sure, the Headless Horseman is still a villain (and a fantastically maniacal one at that) but Disney's version of Icabod is that of an antagonist using his charms to get by while Brom Bones has to figure out how to get him out of town before he ruins things.

I think you'd like the old horror films from Hammer Studios from the 50s, 60s, and 70s. They have the same gothic atmosphere and star great British actors like Christopher Lee, Peter Cushing, Oliver Reed, and Joanna Lumley. My favorites are The Brides of Dracula, Curse of the Werewolf, Dracula Has Risen from the Grave, Captain Kronos Vampire Hunter, The Devil Rides Out, Vampire Circus, and The Lost Continent.

I always hoped after this movie came out that there would be a TV series set about 1820 called The Adventures of Masbeth where a grown up Masbeth would fight otherworldly challenges with his strength and bravery while being mentored by an older Ichabod Crane who uses science and the law against the monsters.

@reactswithjax: Saw this one in the theatre because I grew up watching Disney's The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad and had to see what Tim Burton would do with it.

Nice reaction Cassie! My first experience with this story was in elementary school, maybe 4th or 5th grade. That story was edited so that it was appropriate for a young audience. My next experience was the Disney animated adaptation. Both largely followed along the same story line. Next was this movie. This was very different, and obviously meant for an older audience. Finally, a few years ago, I realized that I had never read the source material. So I bought a book of Washington Irving's short stories and read it. It is a little difficult to read, as the language of the time (1820) is different from even the language of books written in the early 1900's. But the book does confirm that the Horseman was a Hessian soldier. That is about all that the movie has in common with the actual short story, except for some main character names. In the short story, the horseman only appears for 2 1/2 pages, a very small percentage of the actual length of the short story. The rest are just stories about him as relayed by other characters. And the ending is quite different between the short story and this movie. With the exception of specifying that the horseman was a Hessian soldier, which the Disney adaptation omitted, Disney's version is the closest adaptation to the actual Washington Irving short story.

The 'rest of her eternity' is likely to not be very pleasant. On one hand the horseman did seem to have a smile on his face before jumping them back to Hell. On the other, she's responsible for his death, his unquiet rest, and raising him up repeatedly for her own greed and vengeance. Oh, and the horseman was never a nice or kind person so that smile was likely at least a little sadistic.

In the original short story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow", the headless horseman can't cross the bridge and throws a jack-o-lantern at Ichabod as he crosses it, so that is likely the reason the pumpkin imagery was used as heavily in the film.

I adore Tim Burton's Gothic style, his films often pulls heavily from German Expressionism, particularly in his Batman films, which I love. Even films like Mars Attacks are a joy to watch, despite critics at the time disliking it. Admittedly, his style isn't for everyone, similar to directors like Sam Raimi, whose unique approach and visuals don’t resonate with all audiences. But I love it so much.

Great reaction Jax like always. Love this movie. There are some fun-facts about it. The character of Ichabod Crane wasn’t originally written as a very attractive person. The Disney movie in 1949 touched upon this by giving the character a giant nose with even bigger ears. The character is also usually very lanky with big feet. That being said, Johnny Depp doesn’t really match this description. As revealed in the DVD featurette called Behind Sleepy Hollow, Depp mentioned that he would have liked to wear prosthetics to bring the giant nose and ears of Crane to life. However, ultimately Tim Burton didn’t think they needed the effect. Tim Burton specifically asked to have the heads spin around! Even though the decapitations in the movie may have not been very realistic, they looked very Burton-esque. The reason for this was because Tim Burton specifically asked the special effects department to figure out how they could get the heads to spin before they fell to the ground, as revealed in the featurette Behind Sleepy Hollow. To create the effect, the team had to create mold’s of the victims’ heads to attach to a mechanism which would make the mold spin around. They also created a skeleton from electro-magnets so that they could flip a switch to make the fake body fall limp. The legendary Ray Park was the stuntman behind the headless horseman. Park is most known for his Star Wars role of Darth Maul and his role of Snake Eyes in the G.I. Joe movies. The featurette revealed that Park was filmed while wearing a blue mask, which could easily be digitally removed during post-production to give off the headless appearance. Keep up the good work.
