In the Spanish language version Donkey says “In the morning we’re making tamales!” instead of waffles haha. My uncle was trying to teach my little cousins Spanish and this was their favorite movie. I use to know every line (and a few of the Spanish lines even though I can’t speak it haha.) Every time I hear/see the word tamale I think of that part.

This whole movie is full of adult jokes/innuendos. It was hilarious to watch this once I was older. I was still catching parts every time I’d watch it. Overall it really is an amazing movie. Chris Farley was supposed to voice Shrek. There’s videos on here of him reading lines with early sketches.

As others have said, this was Dreamworks and Katzenberg's getting back at Michael Eisner and Disney. The Farquaad character is a direct "attack" on Eisner, and if you say the character name properly, it sounds just like ... well, just say it. Two words, the second one being "wad." Regardless of the justified attack on Eisner, it is a brilliant film, as you simply must watch the series of sequels. They are all excellent. Always fun to enjoy again, with you.

There is a fan theory that the dragon is actually a princess who was turned into a dragon by a curse and that's why she's unable to speak like the other fairytale creatures. It makes sense because even the trees are able to speak. So her curse prevents the dragon from finding a soulmate which also explains why she fell for donkey because that was the only other animal creature she saw that could speak. 🌻
@lokithecat7225Ай бұрын
Or, that unlike *EVERYTHING* else, she is too stupid to speak. So her stupidity explains why she fell for donkey. "Fan theory" is easy.
@donnilloyd1355Ай бұрын
Not all the trees can speak. It is a kids cartoon. By trying to make sense of it to adults, that only shows stupidity. Who's stupidity? If you argue that question, then that answers the question.
@ezzebjorn4562Ай бұрын
I think there's a strong fact that can bring this theory down, cuz in the second movie when Shrek and Donkey drink the Happily Ever After potion, is said that even the lovers of who drank it will turn into their "ideal" or "true" form. That's why Fiona went back to human. But the director mentioned that they were supposed to add a scene where the Dragon turned into a horse with wings. And that's official. The Dragon is a Dragon
@davidalvarado9957Ай бұрын
@ezzebjorn4562 I don't have a belief either way, but I will say that just because they planned a scene doesn't disprove the theory. If it didn't happen in the movie then it didn't happen at all. It's only "official" in the sense that that is what, at the least, was planned at one point.
@Kenny-ep2nfАй бұрын
I like your theory a lot, it adds up quite well.

Some background. The Princess in the book from the beginning, was the Dragon and not Fiona. If you watched the original Pinocchio from Disney, you will understand that there were boys from the Lost Island who were turned into Donkeys. That's what Donkey is. Donkey is a boy who was turned into a Donkey. and Dragon is a Princess turned into a dragon. That will make the later movies less confusing or strange.

The movie was brilliant! About the first scene with the Gingerbread Man, when he asks "Do you know the Muffin Man?" That of course is an old children's song, and they bounced the lyrics back and forth with hilarious results. John Lithgow (Lord Farquaad) is a great actor, especially when it comes to comedy. If you aren't familiar with this work, I highly recommend you check out episodes of a TV show(from 1996-2001) called "3rd Rock from the Sun".

This movie does Beauty and the Beast better than Beauty and the Beast. She doesn't get a dream pretty boy after falling in love, she learns self-acceptance. And she's not the only one not physically attracted to the other, Shrek also falls in love with her while not being attracted to her conventionally beautiful form. It's funny how this movie was considered a punishment in Dreamworks, a project set to faul that animators were sent to if they were reprimanded while they put their all into Prince of Egypt. But they incidentally put everyone with a genuine passion to work on this movie and they strived to make it as good as possibke, and now it's more iconic than Prince of Egypt. One detail a lot of people miss, Shrek was so lonely at the beginning he didn't even have a name, he made it up as soon as Donkey asked because he never really thought about it before.
@JakkFrost1Ай бұрын
Is that bit about Shrek's name from the books, or a personal headcanon that you're trying to make popular?
@ElMonoFuerteАй бұрын
I mean in fairness, Prince of Egypt *is* iconic and an actually great telling of Moses' story up to the Exodus, but due to it's religious nature naturally has a much narrower audience. I think I would say that Prince of Egypt is a great piece of Art, while Shrek is a great piece of Art for everyone. I think Shrek's irreverent story telling is *exactly* why it did so well, especially compared to Disney as a whole, and the sequels do so well by being both perfectly sincere to their stories, but absolutely willing to roast themselves. I was going to compare which Shrek to Disney movies that came out between 2000 and 2002...that's a *wild* list: Spirited Away, Princess Diaries, Atlantis: the Lost Empire, The Emperor's New Groove, Monsters Inc, Lilo & Stitch, and Treasure Planet, to list a few...early 2000s had a great collection of movies.

I know the shrek feeling. I’m a big American dude with a long beard and many tattoos. Just picture a typical old school biker. When I moved to Vietnam almost 9 years ago, people looked at me like I was an alien. I’ve been in the same apartment complex now for about 4 years. At first, many of the kids and old ladies looked like they were scared when I walked by or was on the elevator with them. Now, they all smile and wave. I’ve been a part of the early morning work out group with the local grandmas almost every morning at 5am. Many mornings now, they give me containers of Vietnamese food leftovers from what they cooked the night before. They’ve accepted me now, and I absolutely love being here. I’ve lived in 5 different countries, visited over 40, and this is my favorite place, just barely above Mexico😜🤘🍻

Farquad mentions the fairy tale creatures "poisoning [his] perfect world", but the musical goes into it a little further (spoilers) . . . . . . . . . . Farquad is short and dislikes fairy tale creatures because his mom is the Princess from Princess and the Pea (died during her fairy tale) and his dad is the dwarf Grumpy.
@TheHeroClassАй бұрын
Lore from the musical is considered non-canon. Originally, Farquaad is a caricature of Michael Eisner, former CEO of Walt Disney Compay, who who played a role in Jeffrey Katzenberg (co-founder and former producer at Dreamworks) being forced out of the Disney Company. Farquaad's height, however, is a reference to the height difference between Eisner and Katzenberg, although it's self referencial to Katzenberg after Eisner called him a "midget" in a memo when they were both at Disney.

I could be mistaken, but this movie was created with the main purpose of making fun of the stereotypical "Disney princess" film since the founder of DreamWorks used to be a high ranking member of the Disney executive staff and when the number 2 spot came available he didn't get the job even though his friend was the number 1 and he was the most qualified person to be the 2nd in command, so he quit, made DreamWorks to try to make fun of Disney and to show that he could do it better. Fun Fact: DreamWorks was making this movie the same time they were making Prince of Egypt. However, while the Prince of Egypt was being made as if it would be the perfect rival film for whatever Disney was working on, Shrek was being made like it wasn't going to be anything. It was more of a punishment to work on compared to Prince of Egypt. And look at what's happened since. There's even a Shrek 5 in works since the success of Puss In Boots: The Last Wish and the original cast of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphey, and Cameron Diaz are set to return.

Agent Schreck in "Final Destination" and Max Schreck in "Batman Returns" were named after the actor who played the original Nosferatu in 1929. Used to be a little filmmaker reference because nobody else knew the name. Now nobody makes that reference any more because it instantly evokes a famous ogre - even though this Shrek's name is not after the actor, but from a yiddish word meaning "frightful".

Then in the scene where Farquad is in bed there is a bearskin rug on the floor with a bow on it. I'm sure you can get the allusion from that context.
