You should check out the old 1960s Addams TV-show, which really laid the groundwork for who the Addams Family were. I've been told that Gomez and Morticia was the first TV couple on American TV to actually be allowed to show intimate affection (kissing, touching, etc.) for each other - not only that, but they defied the typical stereotypes of the unhappily married couple with the beaten down husband and nagging wife that was pervasive in comedies at the time. Best part is how surprisingly inclusive they are, accepting all people into their home, no matter how different (or "normal") they are. A powerful message in the 60s, and today. Carolyn Jones defined Morticia Addams as the elegant and mysterious lady of the house, and John Astin the passionate and eccentric husband.

I've heard of a theory that no Addams can be killed by another Addams. So, they can do whatever they want to each other, but are still vulnerable to the outsiders. The original plan was for Gordon to be just accepted as Fester. The crew felt like it didn't fit well, and decided to ask the director to change it, so that he'd be revealed to be the real Fester. The message was delivered... by Christina Ricci (Wednesday).

1:35 If I remember right, they had the actor for Thing (Christopher Hart, an actor/magician) lay down on a cart while he was pushed around while doing the "walking/running" motions, and then they greenscreened/rotoscoped his body out. I also remember hearing that his fingertips were absolutely destroyed from doing it so much, lol. And that train shot at 15:43 was the funniest thing in the world for me when I saw this movie as a kid. I remember absolutely losing it at Gomez's insane laugh, lol.

Now, that school talent show is one I'd actually enjoy. 😄 Charles Addams started to draw the cartoons that eventually became The Addams Family for "The New Yorker" magazine in 1938. They lampooned the laughably unrealistic view of the "perfect American family" as portrayed in paintings by such artists as Norman Rockwell and (eventually) such television shows as "Father Knows Best", "Leave it to Beaver", "The Donna Reed Show" and "The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet." Those shows did everything possible to epitomize conservative American cultural values as they ignored (or even actively denied) the lack of fulfillment felt by many American women -- forced out of the workforce after WWII and then restricted to domestic life -- as well as the rising tide of change wrought by the Civil Rights Movement and the bitter resistance to the war in Vietnam. By contrast, the Addams family held up a macabre mirror that pointed out the shallow hypocrisy of the times, by portraying a family that lived hilariously outrageous lives while at the same genuinely loving and caring for one another, and engaging in activities that (although bizarre on the surface) actually did good things for their community while voicing contrarian views of societal norms. This set of films captures that beautifully -- especially the second one -- which would've made them fun to watch even without the spectacular chemistry between Angelical Huston and Raul Julia, as well as he delightful performances by Christopher Lloyd and the brilliantly cast Christina Ricci, both of whom absolutely nailed their characters.

Where Christna Ricci (Wednesday) got her start. Everyone sort of compares Jenna Ortega and Wynona Ryder as the goth girls now, but Christna Ricci was in pretty big demand in the 90s and early 2000s. Unfortunately, she was so good at playing psycho she kind of got typecast.

In the original ending Gordon wasn't really Fester, he was just an imposter who ended up with the family instead. The cast hated it, and they elected Christina Ricci to be their spokesperson during the first cast table read to try and convince the director to change the ending. She successfully convinced the director to change the ending that it was truly Fester.

Common misconception. The “tips fedora” guy was Jerry Messing, who played Pugsley in Addams Family Reunion, 1998. The bad one with Tim Curry and pretty much none of the original cast. This Pugsley was Jimmy Workman, who by the way is the brother of Ariel Winter, who plays Alex in Modern Family.

😎👍 The main difference between this and the original television program (1964-1966) is that on TV, Lurch was more than just a peripheral character. He was one of the main reasons people would tune in week after week. It was fun watching his facial expressions and goofy mannerisms. 😁 Incidentally, if you found it novel seeing Christina Ricci at this age, then check out any movie from the 1970s with Jodie Foster in it, or any movie from the 1980s with Drew Barrymore in it. 😉

One of my childhood favorites! I'd like to think it informed my outlook and sense of humor as an adult and am lucky for it. If you get a chance look up the original Addams Family Comics, which were a newspaper comic strip poking fun at the 'nuclear' American family yet being wholesome, supportive and loving. As an oddball I find it really upliftng when im feeling down.

In my mind, the Addams family is the exact opposite of old fashioned upper class ideals. Ugly (weird, scary) on the outside, beautiful (loving, nurturing) on the inside. They don't care one ounce about their perception from outsiders but very much for family. Considering their nigh immortal even trying to do things that would murder normal humans are more like loving quarrels.

Yessss..... every single Addams Family movie or animation I've watched I've just absolutely loved. Really really loved it! Addams Family Values (next one) is just as good in my opinion. They really know what they're doing when they make these Addams Family movies and shows. I was really bummed to hear that Raul Julia (Gomez) passed away, not too long after Values came out. He was a really great actor (even in the silly Street Fighter movie he played the villain really well.) But yeh all the gross and scary stuff that they do is always funny. Loved that it was Christopher Lloyd who played Fester too. He did a great job. :)

0:05 -- RE: "I have never seen this movie before."; A: Even if you had I suspect this will be Lambie's first time, correct? This film is excellent for its commitment "to the Bit" which started as a comic strip before going to TV, before eventually landing on the silver screen. Peak Morticia is arguably during the TV years but Dang, Angelica Huston knows how to deliver a line with panache. Whatever else the Addams family is, it is certainly true to its own self.

There are actually two sequels, but The Addams Family Values is the only one worth watching. Pretty much the whole cast replaces for the third. Angelica Houston refused to reprise her role as Morticia due to the passing of Raul Julia in 1994(RIP), her actual response to being asked was "Not without my Gomez). Christooher Lloyd also declined to return out of respect for Raul.

Angelica Huston (Morticia) has such a presence because she is Hollywood royalty. Her family has been in front of and behind the camera since the early days of film. Her grand father Walter was an Oscar-winning actor (Treasure of the Sierra Madre), her father was the legendary writer-director John Huston (Treasure of the Sierra Madre, The Maltese Falcon, The African Queen, the first big screen version of the musical Annie, & Prizzi's Honor...to name just a few) who also acted (he voiced Gandalf in the animated The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings in the 1970s) Her half-brother Danny is an actor (X-Men Origins: Wolverine as Stryker and Wonder Woman as General Ludendorff), as is her nephew, Jack (Boardwalk Empire, Ben-Hur (2016 remake), and the recent The Mayfair Witches) Angelica herself has been in many films and won the Oscar as Best Supporting Actress for the comedy-drama Prizzi's Honor (directed by her father and starring her former lover Jack Nicholson, along with Kathleen Turner) She was a so in John Wick 3 & 4 She also co-starred with Michael Jackson in the short 3D film Captain EO, directed by Francis Ford Coppola and written by George Lucas, which was an attraction at Disneyland for many years and can now be seen on KZbin. Raul Julia is one of my favorite actors. He did stage, television, and film. He sang wonderfully starring in such musicals as The Threepenny Opera, which he later brought to film as Mack the Knife, playing MacHeath, aka Mack the Knife. He also originated the role of Guido Contini in Maury Yeston's Nine on Broadway, directed by Tommy Tune, the only adult male in a huge female ensemble, the show itself based on the Frederico Fellini film 8 1/2. His role was played by Daniel Day-Lewis in the Rob Marshall film Nine in 2009. Several of his films should be seen in reaction videos but aren't. Among his best: - Presumed Innocent (as Sandy Stern) opposite Harrison Ford - Kiss of the Spider Woman as Valentin opposite William Hurt's Oscar-winning Molina - Moon Over Parador opposite Richard Dreyfuss - Tequila Sunrise with Mel Gibson,Michelle Pfeiffer, and Kurt Russell - Street Fighter with Jean-Claude Van Damme, Ming Na-Wen, and Kylie Minogue...okay, it ain't a great movie by a long shot, BUT Raul was amazing as the villainous M. Bison. It was also his final role. See it just for his scene with Ming-Na Wen as Chun-Li..."For me, it was Tuesday." Rest in peace, Raul Julia....in memory still bright!

I actually like the second one a little bit more I don't know why? there is a guest star in it that just blows it away and you will know when you see it. This one is definitely better to watch as an adult I think because there are more adult themes involved as far as the law stuff goes but they are both just so good and fun in their own way.

@Reacts With Jax - if you like the Addams family, you would probably love the first season of "Wednesday"... I chronicles Wednesdays life in a not-so-conformist school.. lol the second season is coming soon AND Christina Ricci has a recurring role in it.

I understand that Fester becomes bald again (without shaving) because of the hurricane lightning storm, but what I don't get is why he ever started growing hair in the first place. Is it just that his baldness isn't natural, but rather is caused by all the Family shenanigans, so when he was away from the Daily his hair had a chance to recover? 🤔

Liked everything about this movie with the exception of how they depicted Thing. In the original show they called it Thing for a reason. All you ever saw of it was a hand coming out of a box to light Gomes's cigars among other things. And you never knew what the hand was connected to. All you did know is that it was at their beck and call in every room in the house. This was a big joke in the '60s. They even had novelty battery operated Thing boxes you could buy as Christmas gifts back then that acted as piggy banks. I had one. But they threw away all the mystique with Thing by depicting it simply as some boring disembodied hand. Why call it Thing, then? They missed the joke entirely and they compounded the error in all the subsequent sequels. Even the animated reboot with all the potential animation provides got it wrong.

Sounds like you just misinterpreted it and can't accept your invented theory isn't true.

@@callmeshaggy5166 Not an invented theory. It was the common view in the 60s when the original show first aired. And it is this latest version that reimagined the 60s TV show that changed the entire concept of Thing. And from the point of view of those who grew up with the original TV show, they destroyed the joke in the process.

Hey, lets not throw shade on John Astin. John's performance invented practically everything about Gomez's personality Without him, there is no Raul Julia version.

@@williambryan3346 These must be young kids who are saying Raul Julia is a better Gomez than John Astin. They probably didn't grow up with the Addams family. I'm 46 so I grew up with reruns but they were still the originals.

I have odd feelings about this one mostly good. When I was little I studied illustration and the collective of Chaz Addams. Their are a few scenes that are reproductions of the old strips of his that were published in the New Yorker and I think that is very cool. I am familiar with some of the family as well at least one of the actors and it's hard to watch this and put all that aside but mostly it just resonates in a familiar way for me. There is a nostalgia for people who watched the black and white show I believe, I've seen a few episodes and think it is very clever stuff, and it seems to have resonated with fans of that show. Else I tried to nail down why this specific film is so renowned and I think it's composition. Every take is perfect I swear and even the atmosphere in them. Some of the less pronounced members of the cast do falter their deliveries but all the same that perfection in the scenes just makes up for it. Start to finish from the camera, editing, acting performances, script, screenplay, sets, wardrobe and so forth I can't find a scene that's anything less than hitting the bullseye here. I am engaged and captivated in every second of this film.

Family friendly spooky movies with Anjelica Huston in a big role I would say Jim Henson's The Witches (1990). The themes and hijinks are similar to this and else Anjelica's and Rowan Atkinson's performances are endearing. For Raul Julia performances Kiss Of The Spider Woman is without a doubt his best film.

The Addams Family1960s TV show is worth checking out. This was a throwback to that series but with a bigger budget. while the canned laughter is dated, that show defined the personalities and quirks of all the characters.. even moreso than the original comics that started it all.
