30:30 No. Disney did not "rotoscope" their animations. This is a common misunderstanding on Disney features. Disney used live action film as *Reference*, and did not trace over the footage. This is a very common misunderstanding of what rotoscoping was. Rotoscoping is not cleanup, nor is it reference animation. It is the literal tracing of a figure on to celuloid from footage. The reason it "floats" is because the timing and spacing combined with the perspective of the camera, rarely matches the apparent weight and perspective of the enviroment/character. This is discussed in the animator's Survival Kit, page 370-376. I wish animators read their history. It's not to nitpick, but most of the good animation in history, was NOT rotoscoped. Rotoscoping is fine for adding VFX in liveaction. It can *never* replace good character animation, not without significant cleanup and modification, and at that point you might as well just fucking animate it the right way. Same goes for mo-cap. Most people assume that the "instant" results can match up, but it often doesn't. But no, none of the features were directly rotoscoped. The case of sword in the stone and robinhood were cases of "recycled animation" were they animated over existing animation they had, in robinhood's case the dance sequence was just the snow white dance sequence. Funny how there are so many people on this very website who think rotoscoping is good animation or even animation in the first place. The most offensive example i encountered is probably the dude who wrote an algorithm or something along those lines to turn his footage into very ugly "animation". Of all the skills to have as an animator, tracing images is the least impressive anyway. Actually referencing footage and drawing in ones only is nothing but a pure demonstration of skill however, and I can see why they opted to recycle these extremely beautiful and complex animations when the company was in dire straits.

@ダークジャスティス exactly. All of the automatic methods/easy methods can work in a pinch, but they can never truly replace the capabilities of an animator who knows how movement works in their head. Mocap and its ancestor rotoscoping/animation tracing are neither easier nor better than proper animation. All of the arguments made for the tech have ignored the realities of its usage in the industry and the actual limitations of it. Mocap is only really only good for scanning an actor into an animation/game. It is great for capturing reference or scrap data that can be used in manually or procedurally animated systems. But, the hard work of animation merely is shifted to the physical actor. It is not useful for animating anything that is not human shaped and can only record the exact scenario an actor recreates and can not exceed the limits of the human body. What's more, the production costs shift. Instead of having an animator bang out a scene by hand you have to buy the suits and sensors, rent or buy a large enough space, and rig it, collect all the data, then spend hours tweaking, remapping and rerecording data, all for the result of a really uncanny movement because the character is not the same proportions or weight as the actor. Many people who swear by it ignore the astronomical costs that, despite tech advances, still cannot produce flawless results. Not to mention, from an animation philosophical perspective, it limits you as an artist. You can only record humans, and your quality of work is limited by the physical acting skills of the actors. Animation is meant to create worlds and things that don't exist and to give them believable motion. Not necessarily "realistic" motion. (Does anyone seriously believe DragonBall or Loonytunes would look "better" if they could only move like the human actors puppeting them? Is the cgi lion king remake really better? Short answer: Big fat NO!) Meanwhile, if you spend the time and effort, study the movement and practice; you can easily produce animation that is far more interesting and engaging to watch. It's so frustrating when people don't understand the medium!
