3 weeks of driving new 2024 Rav4 Prime XSE. When the battery is depleted, it's costing me about 90 cents for the roughly 10+ hour charging at home plugged into to a standard wall outlet. And getting 40-50 miles of range on that charge right now during the winter here in Oregon, while running the heater, seat warmers, etc. I like it a lot. This replaced my 2016 Mazda CX3 GT, which I also enjoyed to drive. But was missing my 2007 Prius' mpg. That Prius was the best car I've owned over many, many years of driving.

I am quite happy with my 2022 Prime so far. Basically a full EV vehicle for daily commutes and even weekends around the city. A great ride on long family vacation road trips not having to worry about range anxiety, hunting down chargers in remote areas, or waiting hours for a full charge on some of our 1000 mile + trips. Just hit 20,000 miles a couple weeks ago.

I have 2022 prime too, I can get 50 miles out of an EV charge but 80mph that gas engine is maybe 32 mpg at best. I just don't like how it doesn't have any temperature gauges for battery or ICE coolant.
@DocMicrowave7 ай бұрын
@@kyrosmike You could maybe add those gouges and readouts using a wireless OBD2 scan tool plugged into the ODB2 port. Then a scan app on your phone can give real-time readouts on lots of parameters in the car, including temperatures. App and scantool are fairly inexpensive.

The Prime has a 179 hp motor in the front and 53 in the back so you can get 232 hp in EV mode with AWD is activated. It's best in class for a plug in hybrid in EV mode, which is part of the reason I bought it. I planned on driving in EV mode most of the time so that was important to me. It beats even much more expensive PHEV's in EV mode, and although other PHEV's have more total HP the Prime's 302 HP is very satisfying and much more efficient than the competition. I'm two years in and so far so good.

Thank you for the video, Toyota Plug-in Hybrids are AMAIZING; Firstly, they take away the “range anxiety” of the full EV car as EV driving mode is switched seamlessly to the gas engine with a full range of 600+ miles, far superior to any full EV car. I got my Rav4 PRIME 3 weeks ago with 3 miles on the odometer, a full tank of gas and a fully charged battery. Today I have 610 miles and a 3/4 tank of gas, if I keep driving this way, I will hit 2000 miles before pulling into a gas station. Thanks Toyota.

@DjMastadon Жыл бұрын
How often do you charge the vehicle?
@jml9550 Жыл бұрын
@@DjMastadon it depends on how much you drive. In pure EV mode it goes 40-50 depends on climate. After the 40-50 miles is depleted, driving it hybrid mode will not completely re charge the hybrid battery, so you need to plug in every day to take advantage of the EV 40-50 miles. If you don’t have a garage to charge or free charging at work, I would not recommend the Prime. You are better off just get the regular Hybrid XSE. Of course you will also not get the nice acceleration of the Prime.
@rolandbaranov3546 Жыл бұрын
Many times a day, as often as I can, I know there are different opinions about it but don't we recharge the battery every time we step on the brake (regenerative braking?) When I can I like to use the cable provided by Toyota 1400W/h (slow charging), instead of L2 charging 6600W/h, I think it is better for the battery (my opinion)@@DjMastadon

Nailed it with Tesla, they're a tech co, not a car co. My family has an old Model S and it feels unnecessarily clunky, low visibility, ZERO manual buttons (have fun taking it to the snow only to freeze inside because the touch screen is glitched = no climate control), no back windshield wipers, horrendous cluttered touch screen UI, after a few years its range is much lower, and I can go on. It can accelerate fast though due to being purely electric which is its only real pro to me.

Sometimes, Not touching gas for weeks at a time. My family enjoys several long road trips each year for vacations and events The longest being ~2000 miles round trip. I use electric at the start and end of the trip. Hybrid the rest of the way. No range anxiety. No filling a flight plan for being able hit chargers along the way. 5 minutes to fill the tank. Here in Newmarket, Ontario (Canada), there is only two charging stations available (both with only 6 parking spots), for a city of 55,000 people. And on the weekends there is a lineup 10 cars deep trying to get into one of those spots. If you drive an EV on the weekend, there is a good chance you will be waiting 10 hours or more just to get charged up so you can get home. With the RAV4 Prime you can just use a local gasoline station instead of using electric propulsion.

Hello, I drive about 43 miles to work, and I do have an option to charge at work. If I charge twice/day to travel to and from work, does it have detrimental effect on the longevity of the battery. I drive about 35000 miles/year, so I put on miles fast.
@Sleepygarage11 ай бұрын
Hi great question, I believe it's actually more beneficial to battery longevity the way youre charging it. Batteries such as your smartphone last longer when you dont let it deplete all the way as often. However I dont think it'll do that much in the long run, but in theory charging it at home and at work is better for the car.

I am in Vancouver and i just received my 2024 RAV4 Prime XSE and i already love it more than i thought i would. It gives you some of the benefits of a tesla without being a Tesla. and i dont care what anyone says, the biggest cost of ownership is depreciation. I will be able to sell this in 10-15 years for $10,000 Minimum more than a Model Y. Japanese built, their factories make the most reliable cars. Not everyone cares about tech or thinks its always the best. In the time it takes you to get into your screen and adjust the steering wheel with knobs, im already done with my manual lever. It's impressive when you first go look at the car, but youre not adjusting it daily, nor is it faster. I think Tesla Model Y is better at some things than my Prime but overall it is not a better package/value IMO. Tesla are popular and everywhere in Vancouver now, and i'm not impressed with looking like an Uber driver.

I get it that you love Toyota and so do I even though I've only had one Toyota amongst >10 cars so far I've owned in my lifetime. Not sure where you got your story on Tesla being junk. If you have never owned one, please stop repeating rumor, or think before you speak. I've had my Tesla for 5.5 yrs 60K miles and so far I have NOT spent a single penny for repair or maintenance of anything or any kind, no oil or oil filter or brake fluid or radiator leakage to deal with, NOTHING. I've replaced the tires at about 45K miles but that is normal consumable not repair or even maintenance. I did spent about $4 to refill the windshield fluid one time if you must count that as maintenance. Everyone that I know love their Tesla for its torqueness and extreme low or no maintenance. Never need to visit smelly gas station and basically never to waste time and money at "dealer" for maintenance. I am ready to replace the other car with Tesla early next year.

There's no recycle structures for used car batteries and those lithium ion batteries are not environmentally friendly when they are disposed. Might do more damage than good with an EV car than a much smaller battery hybrid/plug-in hybrid, not mentioning even if the batteries don't work, the engine can still drive the car.

The issues with Toyota prime are : 1. Because they are made in Japan, they dont get federal tax credit. People do a lease hack but depends on dealers and contract is complex to execute. 2. We have to deal with high markups and painful dealer negotiation. 3. Advantage is that range anxiety, specially in snowy conditions is nil.

My current vehicle, 2004 Toyota 4runner, is coming up on her 21st birthday. I suspect end of life is coming and I don't want to be stuck making a quick decision with what's available. I've been looking at hybrids but I don't think I can go to a sedan. I'm in socal as well and it just seems to be so much better to sit higher (plus my joints thank me). I was really hoping the 25 hybrid 4 runner would be better on mileage, but it looks like despite it being a hybrid, it'll get similar mileage on a smaller engine. So I'm looking at the rav4s since they can get almost 40 mpg on the hybrid models. Then I stumbled on the prime. The majority of my driving is commuting and local. My work is about 50 miles round trip and currently costs me about$25 a trip in my 4runner. I think I'm going to do some test drives with the prime. I thought about a Tesla but I want another 15-20 year car. Tesla's seem to have a 5-10 year turn over. And I get that it's less maintenance but I'm still not sold on 100% ev - esp with the news of Tesla's questionable build quality. Seems like there's always something coming out about problems with them. But coming from a 20 year old lumbering truck, I think this may be a healthy compromise of higher seat and cargo space vs mpg and cost to operate. Plus it's a toyota - the damn things usually run forever if you maintain them. I'm curious if there's any other maintenance you have to do with them as a phev - is it any more than a normal hybrid (oil, brakes, etc). Does the ev side require additional maintenance?

Thank u for sharing! 4Runner is awesome but yeah I feel u on these CA gas prices and how the new 4Runner is still a bit of a guzzler, and yeah my joints love SUVs too lol. Full EV is a bit of a burden long term now with how fast tech moves and its reliability and all that, a 50 mile round trip commute would be Pennie’s to charge at home with a RAV4 prime and when you go anywhere far you don’t have to worry about expensive charging. I don’t think there’s any difference in PHEV and Hybrid ownership over 10-15 years, both are safe options but I’d definitely try to get a Prime especially with the tax credit in CA.

I disagree, it is not Lexus like refined. Not even other Toyotas. Just test drive one and it was VERY loud in the cabin. Louder than Teslas which is a low bar. I’ve owned a Camry and a Highlander and those were way quieter than this. The power + efficiency combo is great but we don’t have to lie about being Lexus NX refined.

Apples and oranges. Charging Prime at home and Tesla at Supercharger. This should be compared to charging a Tesla at home, in which case Tesla saves substantially. Add solar and it's a no-contest.

The slow wait times are annoying at Tesla superchargers when doing road trips. I'm going to sell my 2023 Tesla Model Y LR and get a RAV4 Prime XSE. Today I timed my gas fill up on my Ford Transit work van at a Chevron gas station and it took about 2 minutes and 30 seconds to fill 22 gallons.

Good lord, why in the world would anyone who’s credible compare an EV with an ICE (regardless of what variation of a paired battery).
@garymaclean69035 ай бұрын
The WORST factor about the Prime is how if most of your commutes are short where the motor never/rarely runs, it's the worst case for the health of your motor. Any gas motor which runs infrequently, or for only short periods, all tend to never reach operation temperatures long enough for the combustion by-products (water, unburned fuel, hydrocarbons) to not condense into the oil and reduce its lubricating capacity, and form sludge. Short commutes are considered Severe Service for gas-only motors, and oil change frequency is recommended more often for the above reasons. A weekly highway run where the motor oil reaches full operating temperature for a minimum of 30-miles or so is mandatory if you want your motor to last. Handles well? Compared to what? The RAV4 is NOT a 'sporty' handling vehicle. SUV's are still relatively tall and heavy vehicles, and as significantly more prone to roll-overs in a crash. Yes, I've owned Toyotas in the past, and I like the RAV4 Hybrid (non-Prime), but I have no delusions over what it is.

"Way better than a Tesla Model Y" Maybe if you can get your hands one one. Wait time for Toyotas plug in vehicles is 2-3 years. That means you can potentially say goodbye to any government rebate as well as loyalty interests rate reductions. Toyota still continues to take deposits on these cars and make people wait for a car that may be irrevelant by the time ones brand new 3 years dated vehicle is ready for pickup and countless payments.
