I was working in the grove and came upon a tiny Glenn mango hiding on a branch. Since we thought we were done with Glenn and it's my wife's favorite I thought I'd surprise her with a mango sampling for lunch. We had Glenn, Valencia Pride, Keitt, and a seedling. Join us for lunch and hear my wife's thoughts on mango farming.

Valencia pride is one of my fav. Keitte I will buy when they come around. I gave up on Tommy Atkins. Horrible. 4 Years ago I planted a seed from a Valencia pride and its 8 ft tall already. I know it might not be true to seed but its a gorgeous tree with huge leaves that smell awesome. Growing fast. Hope for flowers next year or two. Thanks for the video.

You guys have a very valid point. Things are loved and appreciated more if its already a part of you. I like the classic as well. But willing to try the tweaked flavors. Not only that, I learned to eat and appreciate various fruits in their different stages because that was all we had growing up. With mangos I eat them from unripe crunchy-green with salt chilli and lemon to even past their peak of juicy ripeness and even dehydrated. I have a distinct memory from about 5 years old becoming full after just one very colorful tree-fallen mango that I came across while on a stroll in the park with my parents. I am easily amazed at the large fruit and colorful varieties even though they may not taste as rich as some trendy varieties. But not to say I would steer away from the crowd. Just that I have not come across them yet. But I am that way with a lot of fruits. Its my way to better appreciate the exceptional flavors when they come. Love your enthusiasm and apprecition for Mangos and Avocados. Though I have been watching videos and learning for a good long time, I am finallly buying small trees of mango and acocados because I also want to do some grafting. Great content as always. I live in California. So wish fruits could be allowed to ship. I hear trees are probably the next best option although I wonder if shipping of Avocado trees is also allowed.

I don't know if you have ever tasted it or not but, I bought a Mallika in a 25 gallon pot from a guy who had decided it would result in too many trees in his yard. I knew nothing of this mango but it was sitting on his patio in the pot and was just a bit taller than 6 feet to the tip. When he told me he only wanted $25 for it, I just had to take it home and I'm so glad I did. We got a lot of wind early in the year and lost most of the flowers and then the young fruit again this year. Up here in West Palm Beach, the only place with a half way decent crop this year is over on the coast. Anyway we had so many mangoes last year we didn't know what to do with them all. I found out I have a new favorite, which was the Mallika. Originally, I was not impressed. It may have been because they stayed too long on the tree. They really need to be picked green and put in a box or a paper bag for about a week or so to ripen. If you really, really love the flavor of mango, this is your mango. The flavor is so intense, it will almost overwhelm you. Trust me, it will grow on you. It is completely fibreless and is not at all messy.

First I met your chilpayate Tommy, and now I have the opportunity to meet your beautiful wife, witty and beautiful, I must say Tom you hit the Lotto with her. :D Valencia and Kitt mangos I'm not familiar, but many years ago, there was the Mango corriente, it looked like a small version of a Manila or a Ataulfo, but true to its name(corriente=common) the flavor was good, but not as good as the two other varieties I mention. When the Manilaand the Ataulfo season peters out, the Tommy mango (known here as petacón), yes its very stringy but its better to have a Tommy than no mango at all. Just getting into the mangos like your beautiful wife. Saw you and Paul trying all the varieties on Father’s day (on video) so jealous. I ate similar varieties this week they are so good. I was out in Loxahatchee visiting a fruit stand that carry’s local mangos, I picked up some Valencia Pride and Keit (spelling) and I agree it reminded me of the mangos my Dad used to get from a really wealthy neighborhood near us in Boca. I want to try the Apricot mango that sounds yummy!! I did not realize you all were South of me. So I need a good choice of mango and avocado tree for my typical HOA back yard. What would be your votes? I bought peach cobbler mango Sunday, but need to resell it, or return it to the lovely lady I bought it from. It’s growth habit sounds too vigorous. BTW-I freeze the Keit in squares it is like sherbet to me. The seedling sounds like one I won’t like either, that musky type mangos or those with a bay leaf flavor.
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
You can always prune the peach cobbler to the size you want. As for avocado your only choice will be to prune it to keep it the size you want. there's one out there called the Little Cado which is a Wurtz and I'm not really onboard that they are a dwarf. I think the Simmonds is an amazing avocado and while the tree will grow big I find it doesn't grow as fast as my other varieties It's also my understanding that the Mahachanook is a slow grower and also a very clean mango...also delicious.
@SouthFloridaSunshine
@SouthFloridaSunshine Жыл бұрын
@@SleepyLizard I was wondering if I could do that I asked about top working the tree but, I maybe thinking of something different, but I believe it is when you cut back the main tree at the top, only allowing branches off of it to create it’s height but still keeping it trimmed back and opened up at the top for airflow? I want to get that book Grow A Little Fruit Tree. David the Good recommends it for backyard fruit tree growers. I will see if I can get my hands on the mango you mentioned. I have heard Paul mention it on his channel before with excitement. And Woah! Just saw his Butterscotch Sapodilla, now I want one of those too. lol I loved the Russell avocado just for the novelty and the taste was good. Will have to order some of yours when they are available again. I like to show my Northern friends one next to a typical store bought Mexican Haas. lol One last thing you mentioned one time you loved a certain variety for guacamole’ I think it was during the big “C” when you all did a live. Which one was that, and is it vigorous or slow growing?

@@SleepyLizard graft now? In the middle of the heat wave??? 😳 Wouldn’t it dry up the scion even if I wrapped it in wax? I have a 12 foot seed grown from Hawaii and now in the ground in SoCal that I want to use as the stock, would it be safe for me to cut the top branches so that I can graft scions on the tree branches after the severe pruning now during summer? Btw very good videos!
@SleepyLizard
@SleepyLizard Ай бұрын
@@faltio69 thanks for the compliment and yes you can graft onto the branches of your 12 foot tree. As for time of year it's not so much about the conditions for the graft to heal it's about when the scions are at their best.

Here is idea 💡. Could Miami-Dade grown fruit be less susceptible to Bacterial Black Spot Disease because of our abundance of calcium in our soil? I get a few infected fruit on my Haden and Keitt, but remove them. Animals are a bigger problem than black ⚫️ spot for my trees.

Are these weird flavored mangos genetically engineered? How do they do that?

not genetically engineered they just let trees grow from trees and select the really good ones. Then we graft those to perpetuate them.
