I took your advice that you gave. I asked if the tree has already set fruit. When can I take a cutting for scion wood. You said after the fruiting period when the new growth starts. The fruit was still hanging on the tree but new growth started with swollen buds on the growth. I took those cuttings 1 month ago and I grafted on to two of my seedlings. And yessssssss😁😁 the one is taking. New leaves are growing now on my graft. Yeeeesssss. So exciting. I'm actually headed into winter. We are in autumn now but I have my grafted tree indoors so it will be safe until spring. But thanks for that advice. My friend planted an avacado tree from seed but didn't have space to plant it out, and he gave it away to a family friend member and that guy planted it in the ground. That avacado tree grows better avacados than any variety I ever tasted. Creamy, sweet, it's huge avacados too. So now that I successfully grafted a tree in spring I'm going to try and get a cutting from that tree of my friend and try to grow it. Buy I just wanted to say thanks because I took your advice and it helped because I was unsure about when to take a cutting and what to look for.

I'm a beginner gardener in SWFL. I've had an avocado seedling planted for the last year or so. I recently repotted it in a bigger pot, and it has a great root system and a strong stem. Is it too late to graft my seedling tree? Is it recommended to graft the seedling tree as soon as it is ready to be grafted? This video was so helpful. Could you also do a quick video going into more detail about what exactly is being cut in the beginning of the video? Do you always have to use a scion from an established tree ? Is it possible to grow two seedlings and use one as the foundation tree the other as the scion ? Just asking a possible silly question as I am new to grafting. I live in South Texas and lost my pride and joy during the freeze, almost 3 years ago. It was an 18 ft Choquete avocado tree....I still miss it....
@SleepyLizard Жыл бұрын
oh man, that freeze was terrible. so many of my customers were impacted. so sad. as for grafting seedling to seedling, there's no reason it wouldn't work from a mechanical perspective but you really don't gain anything by grafting a seedling to a seedling, you still wind up with the unpredictability of a seedling. the reason we graft from an established tree is we want to replicate the output of the established tree. It helps if you think of it like we are "planting" the established tree into the seedling instead of into soil.

@@SleepyLizard well when you do im looking forward to seeing it. im looking to put in trees but cant always find the fruit first. so if i change my mind and want a different variety it would be nice to keep the roots in place and just graft it to a different variety of the fruit.

I would like to grow a cold hardy avocado variety where the temperature can go down to 25°F in the winter, which variety (Mexicola or Hass) should I use as the root stock? Which one will determine whether the tree can withstand the cold temperature, the root stock or the scion?
@SleepyLizard7 ай бұрын
the rootstock isn't important it's the cutting. The rootstock is mostly underground and at a low of 25F air temp the roots will be just fine.

When we graft a avocado tree that is intended to be grown in the colder climate (25F in the winter), we should choose one of the Mexican varieties like the Mexicola Grande as the rootstock for its cold tolerance and the Hass as the scion for its quality, correct?

Question: I know why they strip all the leaves from the bud wood after they trim it in a commercial setting, but hear me out. For people doing this at home in a small scale, would it be a good idea to strip the leaves from the budwood the day before, or a couple of days before cutting it, let the budwood leaf stems heal, and then cut the budwood from the mother plant and graft it? Doesn't that sound like it would give that graft a better chance at success? There would be much less loss of fluids from the budwood because there would be no fluids oozing out of it when the separation happens. Thoughts?

gosh I don't know. I wonder if anyone has ever tried that.

@@SleepyLizard Doesn't it make sense though? A healed plant (top part) is tougher than a stressed out one with liquid coming out of the leaf stems.

So I did what you guys showed us both seedlings graphs are producing buds now and tiny leaves. When do I pull off the tape?

@@SleepyLizard thanks I live in Santa Cruz California and the scions came from a 80’ avocado tree. I think it is a Haas. I’m using copper antenna in each pot and I’m going to put a circle of copper wire around to absorb the electrons to help the sap into the tree.

if you feel comfortable then go for it. if not then keep your seedling going the way it is. you can't go wrong.

Where can I get a couple of Fuerte Grafts? do I need to drive down for a visit and do some work?
@SleepyLizard2 жыл бұрын
Hi Herschel, We don't do Fuerte here, you'd have to look to California or Mexico.
