I'm glad you actually pronounce the Japanese terms properly and know the meanings,after having lived in Japan and competed in Judo for years,returning to the States and hearing most people butcher the names of techniques makes me wince. Great videos.

I know what you mean. I don't speak Japanese but I do "speak Judo." My first Sensei was fluent in Japanese and really imbued in me the importance of knowing the correct Japanese terminology for what we do in Judo. Like you, it makes me cringe when I hear someone mis-pronounce Japanese terms or when someone, especially a black belt, use a Japanese term incorrectly. Thanks for your comments.

I like this better than the Sode Guruma Jime (sleeve wheel choke) where you insert the fingers into the end of the sleeve.

Thanks for your comment Tim! Shime Waza are some of the most technically interesting skills invented and always prove the saying "small things make big things happen."

Great choke. I wrestled throughout high school and college, and after a decade of being of inactivity and 50 pounds later, I joined a local BJJ club in my area. I really like the kesa gatame position because it is a pin I am familiar with from my wrestling days (which was called a "head and arm pin"). It has become a position I really like in the BJJ context, as it prevent the bottom guy from re-guarding. I have used the chest choke successfully from this position numerous times, and am looking to add more tools to my arsenal. I love this sleeve choke, I am at no risk of sacrificing top position or compromising my base. Nice, easy and simple. The way I like my jiu jitsu. Thanks for showing it.

Glad to hear this choke works well for you. I agree with you. Just because a move is simple, it doesn't mean it's simplistic. Usually, the simple stuff has the best ratio of success. Thanks for watching and please tell others about our channel.

I guess you can catch a lot of people unaware with that pin . But it's not that great against bigger (than you) people, no ?

Actually, Kesa Gatame is a workhorse in all forms of grappling/fighting sports and is effective against larger opponents. I've held opponents heaver than myself and I have seen others do it as well.

Thank you for showing us such an interesting submission. I will sure try this next time on the mat. However, if by any chance you read this Mr. Scott, on the opposite situation where i am the one who got caught in Kesa Gatame hold and my opponent has me good so i cannot escape by bridging or turning, is there a choke i can apply to make my opponent submit before they do me?
@welcomematstevescott8 жыл бұрын
As you point out, from a realistic tactical point of view, if you are caught in a Kesa Gatame, the most important thing is to get from the bottom and escape. One of the worst places to be is to be the guy on his back looking up at the ceiling lights. Sode Jime (Sleeve Strangle) can be done from the bottom, but the odds are not good simply because your opponent has a strong controlling position. But then again, if you have no other options, give it a try.

I encourage my students to go for this choke when they've established Kesa-gatame. Why wait for the clock to run out when you can make your opponent submit?

Good point. This is mentioned as in the Freestyle Judo contest rules, when tori holds uke for 20 seconds, the referee will instruct tori to attempt a submission. You're right otherwise-go for the choke while you're pinning him.
