I have to say, I usually agree with Jo and Al on the sleeve issue, although I myself have large arms and would struggle with the idea of sleeveless...but this dress WITH the sleeves is absolutely stunning on her! So happy for her she got what she wanted!

i really think the second dress with the added-on sleeves looked better than the one with plain mesh sleeves. yes she suits a sleeve but she also suits lace and the detailing on the makeshift sleeve not only upped the elegance but also tied the sleeve to the rest of the dress. i wish she had gone with that one instead of the plain jane mesh sleeve dress.

They did! I want to say it was in the beginning of the first episode. I remember Al’s was a strapless satin kind of deal. Cant remember what Jo’s looked like and I think they only showed her first wedding dress.

I think the reason Jo and Al are typically so against sleeves is because a lot of plus size wedding dresses with sleeves either have the little cap sleeves/straps, or the straight, weirdly fitting sausage casing. Straight sized bridal has so many other options, like flowy butterfly sleeves, pirate sleeves, peasant sleeves, super fitted sleeves, and fitted-to-flowy sleeves. Those are all beautiful and much more flattering than the type of sleeves that a lot of plus sized bridal comes with.

There are other reasons, style reasons, to want sleeves, besides wanting to cover your arms! It gives a bit more of a vintage look I think.

Personally I hate sleeveless dresses I think the look incomplete (doesn’t matter if it’s a wedding dress or not or what the bride looks like) so I’m always a fan of anything from a little spaghetti strap to a full sleeve on a wedding dress.

Neither do I. Yes, there was that one example where they tacked mock-up sleeves onto the dress, and it really looked worse. There are So. MANY sleeve styles!! It really doesn't have to be either cap sleeves, or else sausage casings. 😉 What about flutter/angel wing style, or trumpet, or... - I had bracelet length sleeves on my wedding gown, and wouldn't have had it any other way! 😊

I think it depends on the reason for wanting them. Some brides feel like they have to cover up and that’s why they want them. Jo and Al get a lot of brides who want sleeves just because they hate their arms - not because they actually like them as in this case.

And then if she doesn't like it, or if she comes to decide through conversation with them and through trying on dresses that she really wanted sleeves for the wrong reasons, go ahead with sleeveless. It's just kind of infantilizing to assume that a bride who wants sleeves must have body issues and doesn't really know what she wants.

Whether to wear sleeves or not should depend on the season. Late fall, winter, early spring brides tend to wear sleeves. Warmer weather brides might go sleeveless. In the past, sleeves, especially in satin or lace were very common.
