Really classic Orff example of inviting children to audiate and practice many performance skills. I would think more grade 1-2.

Elizabeth, do you have the exact audio you used for this? Some kids watched you do it and played it while they copied you. I'm trying to insert the original song audio to make the song clear and the Leroy Anderson or Boston Pops original doesn't seem to sync up.

Yes, the one I used is linked in the description box above.

I love the routine! What kind of cups did you use? would Red Solo cups be strong enough do you think? Was it rather loud with a big groups of kids all doing it together?

+Andrea Ferguson Thanks for the question- I actually went through quite a few cup varieties before figuring out that the little cups used for cup stacking (which is what you see in the video) are by far the best! They are light but super sturdy. I used solo cups, cheap plastic cups, and a few others, but as you might expect, they do get cracked and broken. It can be done in a pinch, but you'll want to warn the students in advance. I got my stacking cups from our PE teacher who had an overabundance. You might be able to borrow some if your gym teacher uses them.

I would love to share this during my Christmas Concert! What recording did you use? Do you mind if I use it if I give you credit for creating it?

@Brenda C that's fine! If you print something somewhere you can credit www.CaldwellOrganizedChaos.com , otherwise just mention "Elizabeth Caldwell from Organized Chaos". I believe I used a recording of Encore...the Concert Band from this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rKirdqSulJh1j6c

How do you teach this? I would think you would have to "chunk" it, but do you go over the "one, two, three, rest" motion together, then with music, or do you just throw them into it?

+Ayrian Boyd Sorry for the delayed response- for some reason it took a while to get your comment to show up! Anyway yes, I teach them the pattern for the main theme (the 1-2-3-rest) and we do the entire song with just that section and just rest in between. Then we go back and add the B section (tapping on the cup etc) and do the song with the A and B sections, resting on the others. Then we add the C section and coda, and do the whole thing! This process is actually the easiest way for them to experience the repeating A section, and makes it really easy to discuss form afterwards. Hope this helps!

Haha! There are definitely several different versions (and you could even make up your own!) out there. Feel free to use whatever works best for you- this one is intended to be very simple to use with very young students :)
