A glorious costumed romp through the most scandalous years of the Palace of Versailles, telling the story of Louis XV, one of history’s greatest libertines.
Louis ruled for almost 60 years. As a military leader he was popular and successful, but he then led France into the disastrous Seven Year War with Britain. As his Empire dwindled and his treasury emptied, Louis amused himself with a series of scandalous love affairs, set up his own private brothel in the gardens of his palace and bedded five sisters from the same aristocratic family. He fathered at least 30 illegitimate children, survived an assassination attempt and for many years effectively shared power with his favourite mistress - the glamorous and brilliant Madame Pompadour.

Please keep in mind this documentary was done by the British for a British audience. They never had a revolution to outst the aristocracy from power. In fact their aristocracy is alive and well (and they're still reforming their House of Peers). Their aristocracy still own the majority of land in England. Louis XV had begun an ambitious project to centralize his kingdom with the state buying properties neglected by landowners. Under his reign, the French state continued its war with the aristocracy. They now sent out professional administrators (the intendant) to see to the neglected peasants and to better the infrastructure; canals and roads were built as he looked for ways to improve their industries, like the silk, pottery and paper making industries. If he dismissed the Paris Parliament, it was because they were all aristocrats standing in the way of reform. Minister Turgot and Louis XVI found this out when in 1776 the Parliament stood in the way of Turgot's proposed Six Edits. The Six Edicts would have put an end to privilege and made everyone equal before the law. It would have ended corvee labor. In short, it would have been the revolution of 1789 (without the blood shed). Beware of Soap Opera history!

One day at the beginning of the Seven Years War, a man who said that he was a chemist, proposed to Louis XV a secret weapon under the form of little floating balls, able when lighted to burn anything, even stones, in order to destroy completely the Royal Navy. Pouring water on this fire to extinguish it, made the fire even worse. The King was very impressed and asked for a live demonstration. The King, the chemist and a few other people went to a river where has been towed a decommissioned old warship (all ships in this time were made of wood.). A whole bag of these little balls was put in the river and the balls floated to the ship. Then a cannon shot was shot from the bank of the river and the balls caught fire burning the ship entirely. Instead of accepting the offer, Louis XV ordered the arrest of the man who died in jail, taking his secret with him in the grave. The King said at this moment said that using this balls against the Royal Navy will not be not a naval battle but a massacre, and that himself King Louis XV could not massacre British sailors, even if they were enemies.

he was extremely loathed by all the french political sides in the french national tale from the late XVIIIth to mid XXth. For republicans and socialists, he was the very incarnation of the monarchy's degenerency, for the nationalists, he was the incompetent wreck that had given back Belgium, lost North America and India, and missed the chance for France to be the one world power for the next century, and for the royalists, he was the depraved unholy man that had ruined and soiled the reputation of the monarchy. Since the mid XXth century, historians tend to take a more nuanced view, showing he had been widely demonized by revolutionaries, and had accomplishments that must be taken in account (for example, the fact that the french territory was never invaded under his reign, or the acquisition of Lorrain and Corsica) but are still severe.

You are very confused. 16 became king after the death of 15 (his grandfather) 14 had been dead for many years (possibly 70 odd) and was his great great great grandfather.

there was a chance for it 3 times, and 3 times they wasted it. the last effort was for Duke Henry from the house of Orlean to win the presidency and declare himself king since he was very popular and respected. however he made the wise decision to spare the country another civil war which would take more lives and give France foe Germany more leverage.

What would be the point? Another white man who allegedly has a direct phone line to the Christian god with no compelling reason to serve the country's needs? The French public clearly doesn't want a monarch, and monarchs in other European countries are little more than tourist attractions. Appreciate it for what it was and acknowledge the regime couldn't last forever.

Due to King Louis XIV's wars, he didn't get the money to invest on a big navy, which could had kept Nouvelle-France at the Guerre de la conquête and a decade before at Guerre de succession d'Autriche.

Louis XV made publicly humor about losing Canada to the British. He chose Guadeloupe over Canada. He even gave the last big colony he had saved, Louisiana, to the king of Spain to console him of the loss of Florida.
