Caspar Schols built his first shapeshifting house in his mother’s backyard as her writing cabin that, by sliding a room-on-rails, could convert into a place to sleep under the stars.
He has since perfected his expandable home with 10 prototypes: his most recent model is robust enough to serve as a primary residence and has a bathtub and guest bed hidden in the floor.
[Watch the original video in which Caspar Schols shows us the 1st. prototype shed built for his mother: • Mechanical cottage mov... ]
The house can be opened up - on sunny days, for nature-watching, or just to sleep directly under the stars - with just a push. The entire walls and ceiling of the house move, but anyone can propel this 3,000 kilograms (over 6000 pounds) room-on-rails because Schols created a system that is “super low friction”.
To create a well-insulated home that has walls that move, Schols and his team designed the rails with wind labyrinths to trap the air and added brushes to any moving surface to prevent airflow.

This concept would be great as an extension of a house, with an indoor/outdoor patio lounge and kitchen. I would keep half the house fixed instead, including a bedroom and bathroom you wouldn't have to fiddle with every day. Also, this might work great for an indoor/outdoor swimming pool that you could use year round, even in cold places like Canada, where you still get a lot of sunlight in winter! You could heat the pool in winter with a wooden stove.

Wow! MANY improvements since that first prototype on his Mom's property. I LOVE that it's air sealed now and the glass has double panes. The attention to detail in making it more weather tight, well insulated and with a kitchen, bathroom, not water and power is fantastic! I also notice he's added even a pocket for the glass section to mate into the stationary piece with for air sealing. I really love the original, but having both ends move didn't allow for the kitchen and bathroom. Pretty brilliant. Nice to know he's developing a kit that can be flat packed and shipped, though I'm sure it would be extremely expensive (from our perspective). Anyway, love this one even more than the first!

I would make it a free standing kitchen on one deck, which can be covered just by the glass, or the body section, or opened up. So the door on that side would have to be some kind of larger bi-folding doors.

This concept would be very good for wedding chapels in the woods- so that you can be outdoors, but if it starts raining, or the sun becomes too hot, you just switch things up - while the wedding ceremony is going on uninterrupted.

This type of house is fantastic! I’m forever trying to adjust windows, shades, airflow, etc. throughout my northern four seasons home, morning, noon and night. It is always different, depending on the day the temperature the light the time of day. This home allows so many possibilities. I like to spend all my time outdoors. This makes it so much more possible. This type of an arrangement would work well on a greenhouse too. Why shouldn’t we, and plants, have perfect environment?😊

This builder is amazing. Not only is the amount of design details a great accomplishment in itself, but the way he combines the house with awareness, japanese tradition, with neuroscience, the brain-to-body connection, with our need to connect with nature, (that most of us unfortunately has forgotten!) - well, all that is beyond what I have ever seen on your channel. It just makes SENSE to think and build this way - and I wish more people did. Your best video. Ever. Thank you so much 🙏

I get the notion, I really do. However imo it exudes flatulent novelty and is lackluster in reality. Longevity issues, leaks, track problems etc.. No doubt, any settling would screw up the whole thing. Not to mention earthquakes. And mainly, if you want to be outside, go outside. If you want a bathtub outside, great. This is why decks and patios exist. This is just a waste of materials, time and energy.
@kenbiemac337

I love the way all the small details have been worked out. Those houses may come at a higher price tag compared to same size standard houses, but the extra money is worth it for someone who lives in the great outdoors, and someone who wants to maximize the use of internal space instead of just building big. Your bonus is more space for your vegetable garden or just plain nature.

I think the idea is to either leave the bed out (if you decide to make that your main bed in a loft type space) or leave it in the floor (if you'd prefer a big table and to have your bed up in the loft) and really only change that default setup for bigger events.

Love it. 9 years ago we began our own transition from traditional jobs, home, and approach to “living” life. Today we find ourselves much happier, content, and satisfied in life. The “stuff” we surround ourselves with, because marketing sold us on their dream, isn’t happiness. In fact that stuff becomes a weight, a burden. I would encourage others to find what truly works for them toenjoy life to the fullest.
