I've got 10 box sashes to make this month, so I'm absolutely delighted that you've decided to make this video. Looking forward to poring through the Sketchup drawing and comparing how you do things to how I was taught. I can already see some improvements that I will incorporate into my own work! Thank you for going to the effort of documenting your work.

Hi Oliver, Hope you have a great 2023. As always I enjoyed the video and there are dozens of ways to make sash windows,very few "Wrong ways" as you know. When I make them I make the pully stiles 12mm wider than the finished width and run a 6mm rebate each side (outside and inside of PS) and groove the outside and inside linings to accept the tongues on the Pully stiles so everything locks into the right place when assembling the box, no measuring for the offsets etc. I use the Mighton bubble carrier and bubble, machine a 7mm groove each side of the stiles (outside and inside faces) so the bubble draught excluder is hidden behind the staff,part beads. It works really well and been doing it for over 10yrs. Aq21 in the top and bottom rails and Pile carrier with pile in the meeting rails. Great channel matey and keep up the good work. Another thumbs up fro Mighton, I only use their products and look forward to the little bags of sweets they often put in the delivery boxes. Their paint is good too, maybe you could do a video on their finishes.. 🙂
@BradshawJoinery

Hi Adrian, Thankyou for that, yes i have grooved in the past but decided with thin face sections and draught grooves i would avoid the weakness in the timber, especially accoya. `Interesting, so you aq21 the frame top and bottom and draught srip the sash? I have some of the deventer bubble strip to try, where you dont need any strips in the frame, it all runs in the sash and seals both face and edge in one strip. Ankerstuy is great yes, the primer is unbelievable!

This is really insightful. Thanks so much! Over the course of a few years I've been restoring some of the sash windows in our Edwardian house (also using Mighton products throughout!). As a total amateur I've learnt an awful lot, but still have a long way to go! It's been a lot of time consuming work, making do with the basic tools I have and often fighting terrible weather. Seems a bit mad, as I've come to realise that they'll probably all need replacing shortly anyway with double glazed units. But I'm sort of addicted to it! These videos are dangerous as they're tempting me into making my own replacements. Really looking forward to seeing the installation process as I know nothing about that. The repairs I've been doing have all been in situ. Oh, and yep, Mighton are great to deal with. Even nice enough to include a packet of sweets with all of my orders! haha
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Жыл бұрын
Thankyou Richard! Thats really great to hear, I am sure Mighton will be pleased to read also, they have been fantastic! Installation generally will need strap screwed to MDF closer of box then fixed to inner course of brickwork. If you have width in reveal use a batten and then the battens will support the window lining nicely.

Here in the US it's difficult to find information on these types of windows and your high level of joinery/cabinetry. The ones that do know do not post such detailed explanations on youtube and there's not enough literature around on it. I would gladly pay money for the hard work you put into sketchups. Such a good learning tool. Make more if you can.

Great video and a good update on the video from 4 years ago. A quick question: Would the thickness you use on meeting, top and bottom rails change for a bigger window? I have a sash where the bottom window is 1000x1250mm so a double gazed unit is going to be quite heavy.

Hi Ollie. I have learnt so much from your channel, can’t thank you enough! I had a terrible carpentry teacher at school who spent the lessons making his own projects in a back room, I made a fully working electric guitar by hand and he failed me not believing it was my work!! I sadly walked away from carpentry following that experience. 15 years later i have restarted my journey and you are compensating for that terrible teacher tenfold! I’m giving this a go! Im going to use Accoya but it’s really expensive-what thickness are your pulley styles? I’m hoping to squeeze everything out of a 25mm sawn board 😬 im sure pine would split down the rebate but from your experience is Accoya stable enough to go for an 18-20mm stile without splitting? Thanks! Josh

@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Жыл бұрын
Hi Josh thankyou mate that's really good of you, 🙌 Accoya is quite brittle/dry so I would edge towards 32mm sawn to achieve a 27mm or similar pulley stile if you can... However, thinner is possible with very careful work. Just go very steady putting the parting beads in place! Not too much bashing

I have just retired and started to watch your videos. They are both educational and fascinating - especially this one about sash windows. So much l am going to to take up woodworking beyond my current DIY. I note you use a spindle moulder + (think Felder F700). These don’t appear to be available now and wondered what you would recommend for someone who ultimately wants to tackle for example the sash windows you have made. Any help appreciated. Mark

Hi Ollie - great video as always - thanks! Does the Double glazing panes mean the window frame is thicker overall then replacing original single glazed windows ? Asking as we are looking at replacing our old single glazed with double glazed but worried that new ones won't fit into the old aperture?
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Жыл бұрын
Not necessarily on overall thickness but they will need deeper rebates, which usually changes the look of the sash/mouldings. 14mm units are perfect 4/6/4

Hi Ollie, great video and I'm looking forward to the rest in the series. I'd like to have a go at making some of my own eventually. Do you have any experience of coming up against building control or Fensa approval for your windows? I'm not sure if it's even an issue or not, but I can't seem to find any concrete answers. Cheers
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Жыл бұрын
Thankyou! In sort, yes, mostly that see a really nice and well made window and dont ask anything, but probably best to double check with whoever is inspecting to see before starting work what their requirement will be. You can get council sign off for window replacement, but its pricey and they literally look at them and go Ok... The indemnity policy when selling house is cheaper ;) Oh and any listings or orders your gonna have to be more careful

While I enjoyed the video it made my brain hurt, my drawing "skills" date back 50yr to tech drawing at school with a t-square & graph paper. The wagtail is only fixed at the top, is that correct? Otherwise, how do you access the outer sash counterweights? Also, is it simpler to use a rebate on the inner sash for the glazing then attach quarter round to finish off? It's more pieces to make but maybe reduces potential damage to the inner sash glazing groove. Thanks for the detailed video. Great stuff.
@BradshawJoinery
@BradshawJoinery Жыл бұрын
Yes the wagtail is loose with a screw through it to stop it dropping down. I'm not sure on your glazing suggestion that I understand? Do you mean glaze from the inside? If so it's and option but I'd always do both sashes the same and from the inside makes the same problem just with the top sash
@daveduncan9005
@daveduncan9005 Жыл бұрын
@@BradshawJoinery What I was trying to describe was how the window pane is installed for the bottom sash. Referencing the video at 34:24 (cross section of meeting rail), the glass for the top sash is installed from the outside into a rebate, then the moulding / putty / glazing material is installed to hold the glass in place. Job done. For the bottom sash, at the meeting rail, would it not be easier to install the glass from the interior side into a rebate, rather than a groove, then install quarter round moulding to hold the glass in place? This way, both sashes are simple rebates.

Nice detailed video Ollie, I have to say vertical sliders are not my favorite windows to make they are time consuming and people don't seem to appreciate the time involved with them. What version/plan of SketchUp are you using, I need to look at getting something better than what I have !

@BradshawJoinery Жыл бұрын

@@kevinbland3516 its not ott, its the best way! but with accoya, its not needed, especially with pu glue... and out of a 150mm board i can get a staff bead and pulley stile, whereas if i groove in, there isnt timber left to do so... Little gains! haha
