I learned this song from my Father, who learned it from the Australian Soldiers he served along side as a US Marine in the SW Pacific during WWII. He thought highly of the "Diggers", as did his fellow Marines. He described how they would sing this song marching into battle.

As an Australian I was surprised and happy to learn how many Americans learned this song. It's only a shame it couldn't have been under perhaps nicer circumstances. Our boys fought bravely (by ours, that includes the Americans too)

The official marching song of the First Marine Division, a salute to the marvelous friendship that grew between Australia and the Division after Guadalcanal. It sounds pretty darned good when the Marine band tears hell out of it, too.

My nana was born during the depression and met my grandfather when he was stationed in Perth after surviving Pearl Harbor. He was on the “Pearl Harbor avenger” - USS Bowfin, a submarine. When the war ended US sent wire for my 2 toddler uncles to be sent to US as they were children of an American service member. She was a Bridal Train member. When I was little she would sing this to me and waltz around the room. She also sang kookaburra. They reminded her of home.

I don't think the song is so much about stealing a sheep, as it is about the hard times of a certain time in Australia where things were really bad, it took four men on horseback to take a sheep away from a starving man squatter probably had thousands of them. @@mermaidlunaliseastar7600 same as "take me home country roads" is the unofficial west virginia state song. when i was in the navy several of us were enjoying liquid refreshments with some aussie sailors they taught us this and i taught them take me home country roads. as the evening wore on we thought the singing got better but a good time was had by all. i still smile when i hear this after all this time.
