If Slim Harpo had only lived longer(something that can be said for so many!). He was clearly transitioning from fun blues/rock to serious blues/rock. He probably would have played both!

Took basic at Ft Polk, LA. in the late 60's...at that time Jody was the guy who took your girl while you was in the Army...it was a marchin' riff... just to rub it in.

Jody is a truncation of Job Deferment. Jodys avoided the draft by claiming to have an essential civilian skill that would allow them to better support the nations by staying at home. Then when all the other men were off at war, the Jodys found themselves in a target rich environment with little competition.

"Jody" is a generalized term meaning: any man who stays home while everyone else goes to war. The term specifically dates back to black soldiers in WWII. They took a character from old blues songs named Joe the Grinder (or Joe D. Grinder) who would steal the ladies of inmates and soldiers, and clipped his name to Jody. That's why they say, "Jody's back home, f*cking your girlfriend."

sugarmamaaa, I heard something close. JO( b ) DE (ferment) was supposed to be a program to keep people in vital jobs at home during war. Since most of the men were off fighting, the ones left at home were in high demand.

Approximate lyrics. The lyrics are pretty straight forward, but what the hell :) Jody Man You better leave my babe alone Jody Man You better leave my babe alone You gonna find yourself wasted These my toes you’re steppin’ on I can pur like a kitten and I Roar like a lion when ya miss with my baby You know you’re getting on my time ( ?) Jody man You better leave my babe ‘lone You gonna find yourself a-wasted These my toes you’re steppin’ on Well i can pur like a kitten and i can … roar like a lion when ya missin’ with my baby You know you dragging on my time ( ?) Jody man You better leave my babe ‘lone You’re gonna find yourself wasted These my toes you’re steppin’ on
