You really shouldn't have touched the eel with gloves on. Basically anything rough easily destroys the slime layer of fish which is essential for protecting against fungi, bacteria or small parasites. Once it is damaged, it is difficult for fish to recover and they often end up dying. In spite of how slippery it is, thouching fish with wet(important) hands and using a landing net which has gummed knots is most expertly and the fish has the highest chance to survive.
