@@oldblood_eyes You can't build up immunity to venoms the same way you can to infectious micro-organisms. Your only real defense against a venom is rapid inflammation and restriction of blood flow from the afflicted area. Certain proteins in venom can be recognized and intervened by antibodies, but most of the time the venom will quickly spread through the blood and basically destroy every targeted cell that it comes across and initiate body-wide, multi-organ auto-immune reactions, which become much more severe with each new exposure. So as you take more and more stings or bites from insects over the years, you actually experience worse and worse reactions to them each time, until eventually you become sensitive enough to them that a single bite or sting can be life threatening, whether the venom itself is actually dangerous or delivered at a lethal dose, or relatively innocuous and delivered in insignificant quantities.

​@Joe Pratt yes, to educate people. The pain index exists for multiple reasons, not just showing the average person not to screw with animals. Knowing the amount of discomfort can help researchers working with them, because then they at least can mentally prepare themselves for that level of pain. Knowing the amount of pain they cause, can also give evolutionary biologist a slight idea of its use (example: did it evolve that venom to kill, or to ward off? If to ward off, does the creature benefit from keeping the other alive? Perhaps the would be predator helps by killing off competition, or killing off smaller predators, like keeping a coyote alive to eat grasshopper mice. That mouse does indeed prey apon that very centipede, and coyotes that mouse?). Not everything is black and white. In science, every little detail matters.
