Hey Slim. We used our toilet for 8 years, in the house. No smell. Out in the bin, no smell. We tried pine needles, leaves, etc. We found sawdust worked where anything else smelled some. I also found, as the official dump and clean person, that a single sheet of news print on the bottom of the bucket made clean up much simpler.

NOTE FROM SLIM: It seems a lot of people are confusing a "Compost Toilet" with the erroneously named "Composting Toilet" that has been deceptively marketed, especially to RV users. What I built is a compost toilet, one that is SPECIFICALLY designed to accompany a compost bin, with the end result indeed being actual compost. Also, too many are getting hung up on the assumption that both the toilet and the compost bin will smell. If managed correctly, this will NOT be a problem. Also, bear in mind my toilet is for ONE PERSON, me, and to be used occasionally on a seasonal property. That is not the same as a family of five using it every day. Most of my compost will be vegetable matter and NOT poop. Hope that clears the air (!) a little! Thanks, SP

Growing up our grandparents had a cabin with an outhouse. Not only was it a "luxurious" two seater, it was perched above a ravine full of trees. There was no door, so we had a beautiful unobstructed view. I learned to keep my ears perked for footfall due to the fear of interruption.

Starting in 1980, for eight years, while living in an off-grid cabin in the woods, my family of four used a homemade compost toilet with 2 buckets and 2 seats. We used free sawdust from a local saw mill. There was no smell and there were no issues, although emptying the heavy buckets was a chore.
@mrben65732 жыл бұрын
1:02 absolutely loved this lol. Amazing video. I wonder if a hobo shower would work for your cabin. When the heating was out in my house for a month I got used to using an 8 quart pot to heat up water to a proper bathing temperature on the stove, then taking the pot into the shower with me along with a dipper, and bathing that way. It's amazing how clean you can get with 2 gallons of water, I felt just as clean and fresh as if I had a 20 minute regular shower. The upside of this is you wouldn't need any kind of hot water heater, and you could plumb your shower down to a simple catchment bucket. If you only bathe with 2 gallons of water at a time, you know exactly how much water is going into the catchment bucket, and it will never overflow. If you bathe with nature friendly products you could even use the grey water in the bucket to water plants. It just seems like a very easy and effective way to do things.
Slim, seeing you on the toilet has scarred me for life. Thanks. In spite of myself, I enjoyed the video.

Slim, you did a great job on your solution for your situation. Hope more folks will convert. Using no water and putting nutrients where needed are good works. My female equipment requires some adjustment as I do separate liquids from solids. Using peat moss for solids only, it dries faster and is easier for removal and incorporates needed air flow and much longer time between emptying. I use the liquid "gold" (diluted) for the best natural fertilizer I have found. (Uric acid is the base for many commercial applications.) Just an automotive funnel with long neck or tube into a large jug (large, emptied kitty litter jugs work great). The funnel seals while in use and a cap nearby for transport. Switch out funnel to spare jug. Have never had an odor issue since I've been separating. Those with male equipment could adapt something similar. Also, I have found some soft, natural - colored napkins are less an eyesore in the bin and breakdown just fine. Restaurant supply places have them in bulk and the dispensers for them. Will get that book; looks quite informative. Also recommend "Holy Shit" and "Humanure" for more research. Thanks for your excellent efforts on all your vlogs!

Add a little anhydrous lime to the wood chips, it will help desiccate the waste faster. Then when used as compost it adds mineral lime to the soil. In pine forests the soil tends to be acidic so the lime helps.

Hi Slim,love the content!I've used a toilet just like this for years now,and I found it was easier to line the bucket with a good kitchen trash bag...used to have to clean the bucket when empty like a toilet bowl,now I can lift the bag out(a good one won't leak...not the place to skimp and get the cheap ones😂),and dump the contents into the compost bin,and throw away or burn the old liner.
