Very nice vase Steve. I too have the Elbow tool from Tim Yoder. And the Wedgie sled makes short work of cutting accurate segments. Very nice touch with the black veneer between segments. That sure sets off the Jatoba. Looking forward to your next project. Thank you for sharing.

Glen - I've wanted to pick up the Elbow tool for a while now. I needed a project that would convince the better half that it was a "need" and not a "want". LOL I appreciate you watching and commenting on my video. Take care, Steve

Thanks for put up this video Steve. It’s fun to see and hear about different techniques that inspires turners to try new things. I am looking forward to giving a stave segmented project a go. The vessels came out great.

I'm puzzled as to why you didn't when milling the wood didn't cut the top and bottom of the board with the proper angle before cutting the staves?

Ernest - My apologies for the delayed response. I got the large cone center from Kurt Theobald's website. It currently shows it to be out of stock. You might send him a message and see if he's going to be getting any more. I put a link below. Robust and Oneway also make large cone centers but they may not fit on other live centers. Also, there are videos on KZbin on how to turn your own. Hope that helps. Steve curttheobald.com/store/ols/products/cone-center

Hi Steve, These vases came out beautiful! I'm going to give one a try but am still "arguing" with the Greek Key feature ring! LOL So far it's feature ring 3-Tom 0! LOL Thanks for the video! Tom

Hi Steve - Great video! Watching you do this project answered a bunch of questions I had with this type of turning. Can you explain why you didn't use the same tenon joint to attach the top segmented portion to the staves as you did with the bottom? Aren't you worried about all the end grain? Thanks for the video. The vases are really beautiful!
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 3 жыл бұрын
Jack - Thanks for your comment and I apologize for my delay in responding. I didn't use a tenon to join the top segmented portion to the staves due to the thickness of the pieces. The stave portion and top were only about 3/8" thick which would have made it difficult to make a mortise and tenon to join the pieces. The tenon would have been about 3/16" thick whereas on the bottom there was full segmented ring to make the tenon. I hope that makes sense. At the point in the project where I was joining the two halves I didn't want to take any changes on messing it up. There's not a lot of stress on the joint so I'm not overly concerned about the end joint to segmented ring glue joint. Thanks again. Take care, Steve

Hi Steve, I watched these series of videos at least a half a dozen times and always ask myself why you didn't use solid pieces for the top and the bottom? How many process of attempting this so any help you can give me would be great. Thanks. Tom
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 4 жыл бұрын
Thomas - You can absolutely use solid wood for the top and bottom pieces. I like to do segmented turning so I used a segmented top and bottom. Good luck with your project. Take care, Steve

Beautiful work. What kind of finish did you use on them?
@slindsley1951
@slindsley1951 5 жыл бұрын
George - I thought I mentioned the finish in one of my clips but I must have cut that part out. The finish was Arm-R-Seal by General Finishes. I wiped on 4 coats, cut it back with 320 and wiped on a 5th coat. Once the finished dried I applied a coat of Renaissance wax. Thanks for watching and commenting! Take care, Steve
